If you're looking for a GHIBILI movie with a strong plot and complex characters, you'll be disappointed if you watch this one. However, if you're a lover of aviation, art and history then this is the movie for you.
It doesn't start off strong nor does it end with a boom. It's like the kind of movie that gives you an impression of "Ah.." but be careful, it comes with emotional baggage.
First, I'd like to point out the negative before we get to the positive.
The negative: It might be a bit slow and there was no impactful conflict that really happened to our hero
...
at the first hour of the movie. There's a lot of plane montage that might be confusing or boring to some because there's like 3-minute animation of just planes flying or exploding. Lastly, there's a lot of scenes that do not have any kind of relevance to the story so that might also bore the audience out.
The positive: Great animation, great music, great delivery, great details. It touches the dreamer part of our hearts and our childhood. Also, it shows you the philosophy of engineering which is beautiful and very insightful. It's a window to the world of practical design and the heart that goes into creating something even though it will be used for bad. The romance is endearing, it's nothing special but it's endearing.
Over-all it's a good movie if you really want to take your time into watching it.

Do you ever get that feeling of liking someone and you don't know why? Like you wish you could unlike them cause it feels impossible and it would take a miracle for them to even notice or feel the same way about you? I mean, you probably did but for Yamada, it's more difficult...because she likes a girl. I like how realistic her feelings are for a highschooler. This manga was made to be relatable to highschoolers or girls who have girl-crushes but refuse to acknowledge it because they're shy or they feel hopeless.
major spoiler ahead.
When they started dating, I noticed some REAL
...
insecurities about their relationship, especially on Yamada's part. Who doesn't get insecure over their gf's ex? Who doesn't feel left out because you're different? Who doesn't feel clumsy and slow?
It tackled a real insecurity issue with pasts that gets resolved later. I think that was the highlight of the manga.
Sure, the character substance feels a little bit low but I think that's because the author wants to deliver a real-life couple that isn't too extravagant. Literally just like a real-life couple. Real life couples don't break bones for each other. They make it in the world together.
Anyway, the review isn't that long cause I just wanted to be fair to this manga. It deserves the love it gets and I understand the people who don't like it because of the lack of character substance. Honestly, thats what I usually look for in manga, substance but for this one? I guess it's fine. I'll let the lesbians slide this time !

This manga is not the type of manga
you should read to enjoy. It's nothing
like a rollercoaster,not a rocket
nor a speedboat. It's a slow
and quick ride towards subtlety..
I wouldn't say it's boring either,
because it promises something in each
new chapter. It's like witnessing a story
or a happening
in real life, it's nothing too exciting
...
but hey it's 'something'.
The first thing I'd like to point out is
how the characters are built. They're
built upon pessimism,nothing new
and nothing good either. They have their
own
emotions and personalities that don't
shine at all but that's just how the author wants his characters to be. 'Realistic' enough that they become dull, common and predictable.
Next is the
desperation of the author to give the MC a little bit of
substance and sparkle in his role by giving him a depressing background. It feels forced, just like Oyasumi Punpun. It's so transparent it's almost hilarious. Should the sex scenes be mentioned? Should that be pointed out? Is it worth it? Hmm let's see.. The sex scene doesn't add much. It takes a large chunk of space but it's nothing special or intimate at all. It is shown that the girl wanted him badly, she offers herself to him because she 'loves' him,but in the end, she's just another girl who wants self validation. I don't see anything romantic in this manga. For me,it's just
a story. Nothing special,nothing beautiful
but definitely something I would never pick
up again.

“20th Century boys is a lengthy manga”you’re right. I mean it's 300 chapters long and the first few chapters of the manga seem a little bit too mysterious, too off and a little confusing. Let me just tell you this,it's totally worth it.
To start off, the story of this masterpiece.
- The story was carefully organized in a way that in every 5th chapter, there’s a ground-shaking revelation. And it doesn’t just focus on our main character(s), it also gives light to the side-characters,to the side-villains and even to the deuteragonists. The substance of the plot and characters are so
...
overwhelming that it opens up a passageway where the readers could solve, reflect and learn. The personality of the characters, the little mannerisms, their ideologies, their level of thinking, their experiences, their WHOLENESS….they’re just remarkable.
-The first part of this manga may seem a little mundane but after reading this, you will remember the first CHAPTER. You will remember each “useless” moment. You will remember everything, and you will miss those little moments. That’s how great this manga is
- Since this is a spoiler-free review, that’s all I can say for now.

Kimi no Nawa will probably remind you of several movies you've seen before. Mysterious romance? Time hijinks? ring any bells?
Well, first the story. The flow of the story itself remains active throughout the movie. It doesn't overdo its side stories and focuses on our two main characters. It's probably something you'd enjoy reading instead of watching. It gives an atmosphere of comedy and mystery at the same time. During the climax, it gives you a sorrowful feeling of longing. However, there are several unanswered questions/plotholes. These head scratching plotholes will leave you blank in the end,but no worries,it's still as decent as it is despite
...
its resemblance to other movies/books/shows.
- The art and animation is just beautiful. The use of vibrant colors to attract the viewer’s attention, the detailed designs, the accurate portrayal of nature..just beautiful. The character designs are simple but good. The animation runs smoothly and everything about it is just aesthetically pleasing.
- The background music is so moving and fits perfectly into each scene. The style, the timing,it’s perfect.
- Overall, it’s an okay movie. There are missing parts and there are instances when the romance itself feels forced. It’s like a cup of pure green tea, it’s okay but I wish they added more sugar.
