ok so this movie was a big 10/10.
First off the story. It's not great. As everyone keeps saying the story is basically just trigger parodying everything they have made before and putting something a little new in there. That being said, they pulled it off pretty well and the overall story while it may be kinda basic is well thought out. However... the whole movie jumps from action to politics to wholesome to action to more action to more politics sprinkles in some science and then finishes with more action. I don't mind the way it was set up but there really wasn't much story
...
to it when you look at it from a distance. The plot and the story that was there however was straightforward and fun. Also the movie didn't really stop and explain everything in some boring way and instead it let the audience discover the world and the politics on their own. Yes, some of it was explained directly but people need some guidance when figuring out the plot or everything is confusing.
Then comes the art. Holy crap. I was a big fan of the art-style before i even watched the movie. I loved the character designs, the mechs, the geometric everything paired with bold colour contrast and neons. Promare is new and fun and almost retro with the way it handles color. From a distance the designs of everything is actually really simple but when you think about it, the movie needs a more simplistic approach to the art style otherwise you wouldn't be able to see anything. Not only is there so much going on in every shot but there is so many elements. We have characters, mechs, trucks, helicopters, giant flaming swords and then the flames themselves. It's intense and messy but the geometric simplicity of the art-style allows for a clean aesthetic look to the entire animation. The animation was very well executed and took advantage of the art-style to heighten the action scenes and bold imagery.
the sound design was ..... dare i say it..... PERFECT! All the music and background sounds and the composition was so amazing. I'm not one to pay attention to the sound design, especially while watching something like Promare but every time a track came on i was acutely aware of how good it was. It could be a personal preference as i again genuinely don't pay much attention to the sound tracks and sounds in general. The voice acting (Japanese) was also good. Not anything legendary but a lot better than some anime I have watched.
The characters definitely suffered a bit during the movie. Most of the characters that were introduced had no backstory, no development and barely any personality aside from the cliches stapled to their foreheads. Even the main characters were pretty 2 dimensional. The villain didn't have a clear motive for himself and came across as a self-centered dick with literally no brain, and the main characters weren't much better. However I don't think this was necessarily a bad thing. I mean, yes the characters are important and should always be fleshed out properly however if there was too much focus on the characters it would have taken away from the action and comedy of the movie. I do think that the supporting characters were heavily neglected and the main characters weren't much better but this movie was not about the character development.
The overall enjoyment of the show is a hard 10. It was so fun and constantly exciting. There wasn't a moment that I took my eyes off the screen and at times I was literally yelling at the screen like the otaku trash I am. I think the target audience was more a mixture of female and male as there were elements that both genders would, stereotypically, enjoy. The fight scenes were amazing and the comedy was lightly sprinkled in there. There was enough story and plot to keep people interested and engaged but the action was were it was at. I saw another review going off about the anime being 'Fun' and i have to agree with them. It was a really fun anime to watch.
Overall, the plot and characters were not as strong as i had hoped going into this but the Art and action scenes definitely made up for it. (and the pretty boys) I give a 10/10 because I'm generous and I really just loved watching this movie despite it's flaws.
