Listeners

Both shows are original mecha anime that try to bring something unique to the table through their world building. While Planet With accomplishes this aim significantly better, Listeners has the more attractive premise. Both shows seem to struggle with pacing at times, but in opposite ways- with Planet With coming dangerously close to growing stale early on, and Listeners erratically hoping from plot line to plot line. If you want two interesting but flawed original mecha series, these will be right up your ally- but if you can only watch one it should certainly be Planet With.

These anime, while varying in tone and style of humor, are similar in one core respect that I believe makes a recommendation appropriate. At their most basic levels, these shows revolve around a human man interacting with non-human girls in a school setting, and all the challenges and hilarity that comes with that. In Seton, we follow a human student interacting with various animal girls. And in Demi-chan we follow a human teacher teaching and learning about monster-girl students. While Seton is a more comedic show and Demi-chan is more strictly slice of life/coming of age story, both carry a similar undeniable charm because of the non-human nature of their supporting casts.

While these anime are largely different in genre, setting, themes, and most other measurable quantities, they share one major similarity- the source of their humor. In both shows, the humor is derived from each of main cast of characters being either dicks or dumbasses to each together throughout the show. It is these seemingly mean spirited or even cruel interactions that provide the humorous surface of what are (mostly) very genuine friendships.
