The Blue Exorcist was a refreshing addition to the Shounen anime genre, providing viewers with a new representation of the plot and characters one might have viewed earlier in series such as Naruto. The positive part of the series is the introduction of the occult, the protagonist's relationship with his brother. This anime is a by the numbers Shounen, i.e., (i) the typical scarred childhood; (ii) death of a father figure; (iii) becoming and outcast; (iv) having extraordinary potential/raw power; and (v) friends assisting the protagonist in overcoming his obstacles (making up for the feels). a life of its own due to the theme being displayed by it, and the exceptionally well portrayed characters of Yukio Okumura (who has much more depth than the protagonist) and Phelis Mehpisto (who will keep you guessing and in suspense for the entire duration of the series). The animation is remarkable and the background score definitely makes the show gripping at the crucial moments, making you hooked onto the series despite the simplistic story. The choreography of several action sequences has also been executed with great sophistication, which makes the show all the more enjoyable. Overall the show is visually appealing, and a good way to pass some time. However, it comes nowhere close to pulling off emotional scenes or character development as compared to Naruto. Therefore, all in all this series is definitely good, just not one of the best out there.
