When you think of lgbt-themed manga, probably first thing that comes to your mind would be, real big, Boys Love genre, full of cliché romantic series around one and only one theme -mlm relationalships. But, there are two manga I have read which deal with the issue of self-discovery in an incredibly realistic, but still some kind of artistic, way. And these two are Shimanami Tasogare and Boy meets Maria, both showing everything beyond BL templates, touching really mature themes related to lgbt people's problems that some of them have to deal with.

If you liked Bakemonogatari add

...then you might like 3-gatsu no Lion add

Although their plot is something completely different, thanks to the same director and studio you can feel a similar atmosphere and way of showing story. Both 3-gatsu and monogatari series neatly intertwine dark, deep themes with elements of comedy, although the sense of humor is completely different in them - in 3-gatsu is more warm and cute, while in monogatari it is often based on ecchi, so I can not guarantee that if you like one, you will 100% like the other (in fact, both of them are very specific shows) but I think because of their unusual directory, that it's worth to give a try to these shows.
