Hellsing Ultimate (Anime) add

In order to not start off extremely negative i will list off the things i did like about this show: the soundtrack is good and so is the action, the characters and their designs are cool (apart from seras), the overall premise is cool, the voice acting is good (again, apart from seras) specifically Alucard’s voice actor that guy really outdid himself. Now onto the actual review.

If you want to know about the story, to put it simply, there really is no story. The “story” only serves as a plot device for the gorefest and carnage to ensue. This show has nothing to say and ... you will have nothing to take away from it. It tries to at the end but it’s very superficial and you can clearly tell the author doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It’s pretty much a meathead narrative that was a chore to sit through at times.

The characters are dull, they are nothing beyond “cool”. Alucard is cool. A gun slinger with a red coat (even though we have better versions like Vash and Dante). Alucard is cool, thats it. There really is nothing else i can say about him. I feel completely indifferent about him. He is nothing more than an OP mary sue character who only exists to display his powers and win. The fact that he gets compared to Castlevanias Alucard is absurd because he is a 100 times better of a character than this Alucard could ever be.

There are no stakes in this show since the outcome is evident with how OP Alucard is. Every fight goes the same. Alucard gets fucked up (on purpose) due to him just standing there like an idiot and then we have our “oh my god” moment where he heals himself and goes berserk and kills everyone. It’s honestly just repetitive.

The side characters aren’t any better, with dull, nonsensical and nonexistent character motivations. And underdeveloped character dynamics. The main villain of the show is one of the worst villains i have seen in my life, having the most bland goal to just be another “evil for the sake of evil” villain. The only side characters i liked are Walter (even though they didnt do much with him up until the end and that in itself was an asspull) and the mercenary group leader as i found them to be the most compelling.

The tonal shifts this show goes through with its pathetic excuses for comedy should be a cardinal sin, absolutely ruining the atmosphere and overall tone of the show.

It’s really such a shame because they have all the groundwork for a really good show and they just waste that potential for it to be just another early 2000s edgy gorefest anime. The action is good, yes. But when i don’t particularly care about the overarching “plot” (or should i say the lack-thereof) i am just left in boredom with the fights. I dont really care who wins or loses. Once in a while i’ll let out a “damn” when a character does something unexpected but that’s about it. Ffs even the main villain doesn’t care if he wins or loses.

I don’t really know if i can recommend this anime. I don’t even see it as an anime. It’s more of like an AMV/edit template with cool scenes so you can edit it with music and stuff. If you’re willing to turn your brain off and go unga bunga mode then i guess you can go ahead and watch it. Don’t go in here expecting anything of value. Honestly, Hellsing would’ve been better off as a video game instead.

So to sum up Hellsing Ultimate:

“yall got good writing?”

“nah we got hype moments and aura”

Mixed Feelings

If you are a fan of comfy fun romance anime then this is definitely a show for you. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel or asks any thought provoking questions most of the time, its a simple story about a lonely boy who falls for the popular girl. The progression is decent and and the animation is pretty good. One thing i like about this anime is that the “fanservice-y” moments are there not to necessarily arouse the viewer but more so to show the awkwardness of sexuality during your adolescence.

Mixed Feelings

This show is definitely something. It has a lot of redeeming qualities as well as ones that can harm the plot and overall progression of the story. I have not read Naoki Urusawa's other works so i went in blind to what he is capable of as a writer.

To start, the story delves into deep themes such as morality and what can lead someone to lose said morality. Kenzo Tenma is the perfect protagonist who truly portrays an objectively ''good'' person who always tries to do the right thing until it backfires on him so that leads him to question everything he stands for while ... his boundaries are being pushed of what he is truly capable of. The characters he meets throughout his journey present different moral questions and I can really appreciate that since this anime is trying something different.

Next, the pacing. One of the weakest points of this show is the pacing which leads me to believe that this story was not meant to be adapted and is one of those works that should've stayed as a manga. The overall story takes leaps and dives throughout It's duration which can throw people off from willing to continue watching. The amount of truly useless and abundant flashbacks in this show as well as focusing on irrelevant characters really hurts the pacing of this show. The amount of characters this show wants you to remember let alone care about is absurd. What's most annoying about the number of flashbacks is how this show still leaves you with many questions due to how vague the writing can be. So don't expect all yours questions to be answered by the end, as the ending is open ended in an already vague show.

At last, Johan. I believe this antagonist has influenced many characters in animanga. His sheer presence or in a way the lack of it is truly menacing and you can feel it. The way he executes his plans is always interesting but never mind blowing in my opinion. That's where my praise ends for him though because i believe he is a very overrated character. People compare him to the likes of Askeladd and Griffith and i don't get it. His motivations are very nonsensical and he's constantly fluctuating between goals. He's just a vagabond causing mayhem without any true purpose it seems. His motivations remain vague as everyone has different interpretations of what his goal was in the end but i think i have understood it but this type of writing is annoying because when you aren't completely sure what his true goal was it makes you feel like you are missing a key point to understand the essence of the story.

In the end i believe that this show has its place in this community and will continue to be referenced and revered by many. Naoki Urusawa has definitely made something unique that could not be replicated to this extent but only time will tell.
