Reason: derives too much from the original work and the manga adaptation.
There should've been more focus on the main character's alchemy and production side of things, many interesting details regarding his abilities as an alchemist got removed or over-simplified.

Episode 5 started with a major derivation from the original plot, including removing one of Takumi's main reasons for traveling to Horus. Episode 4 removed a comedic element directly related to why he sought advice from the guild in Episode 5. Instead, the ... contents that should've spanned 3 episodes got stuffed into a single episode 5 with additional unrelated hero-summoning-related content.

To summarise, the anime side scraped off the characters' essence and flesh only to move on with the Sidonia hero-summoning-related plot line.
This story has the word "alchemist" in the title - which should've been the main focus. Did the anime production team fail to choose the most appropriate and interesting direction for this adaptation? Possible.

Positive points:
1. the original soundtrack is good and fits the setting - it has DnD vibes.
2. the character drawings are cute and quite high-quality, it's a saving grace to all the animation shortcuts used.

Reading the manga adaptation while playing the original soundtrack in the background will be time spent better than watching this anime adaptation.
