If someone recommended this anime to you, they probably told you it's a show that looks innocent and wholesome on the outside, but takes a dark turn, presenting this as a selling point of the show. However, this is exactly my issue with the show.

As other reviews also claim, at first the show resembles a kids show. They say it's part of the magic or something but to me it's a problem. I don't want to watch a kids show. I didn't come here to watch dumbass kids do dumbass things, have dumbass interactions, and make dumbass decisions for every second of the show where ... the "dark" stuff isn't happening. First half had me snoozing.

Then comes the dark stuff. I say "dark" because it's the word that everybody throws around to describe the show, but it's a complete understatement. What you will watch is utterly fucked. If you want to know what I mean, go look at the character page on MAL for "Mitty". Stare into those eyes for a minute or two. I'll try not to spoil anything further, just be prepared to watch a whole origin story for that thing. This part of the show made me almost nauseous.

So what do you get when you put a kids show together with body horror? What is the intended audience of the show? Apparently you get an 8.63/10 on average and the audience is 1.2 million regular users on MAL. If you're a "regular" person, you might enjoy this show. But if you're like me you'll be asleep until the part where you'll be vomiting.

“Don’t watch Boku no Pico, it’s little boy hentai.” I heard it everywhere I went. I was relatively new to anime, and it seemed veteran anime-watchers all had an experience with the OVA. And after watching a plot summary – with the forbidden parts slyly subtracted – by SomeMoeGaming on YouTube, I was a bit intrigued.

I took it as a rite of passage, a test of manhood. Was I man enough to sit through the whole thing? Within the very first minute my resolve was mercilessly assaulted. I was told to expect to see a little freaky-freaky between a guy and a little boy, but ... what I witnessed far exceeded my expectations and shocked me to my core. As unspeakable happenings unfolded on my screen, I forced my mind away to consider the supposed “many people” before me who had endured this hell. Fifteen minutes had elapsed by the time I had realized watching this show was not making me into a man, but rather was actively draining my testosterone and making my balls shrink into my body. But I was more than halfway through. I had come so far! With tantalizing victory just outside arm’s reach, I could not allow myself to stop there.

Another ten minutes or so, I was done. I had braved the gauntlet and made it out with my life. I felt repulsed, agitated, and disappointed in myself for watching the full half-hour. But slowly creeping out of me was a feeling of pride, of honor. I truly hope you can sympathize with me here; the feeling was like being a fan of an obscure artist a year before they blew up and became a household name, or being one of the few to climb Everest, or knowing that Frankenstein was the true monster. I was feeling this pride and needed to tell my friends. I also needed them to understand the pain I has just endured. Someone had to help me bear the load.

So I told my friends I had watched Boku no Pico, the whole thing. They asked me what the fuck was wrong with me. Needless to say, I was disappointed.

For the mental health and manhood I sacrificed to watch this, and for the ridicule I recieved when seeking support and sympathy, I give the show a 3/10. At least the theme slaps.
