I see why this is so loved, but it’s definitely for a particular demographic, teenagers discovering feelings. Watched it for the first time this weekend, I should have watched it when it came out but maybe even then I was too old for this.
There are plenty of typical tropes throughout, but there were a handful that I couldn’t get over. The main one was mc with mommy issues, this was made worse by mc finding a mom that made it all better only to end up like first mom. Also that manic pixie plus teenage terminal disease that was so popular ten + years ago.

knew I was in for sad, but didn’t know specifics. The show foreshadows extremely early on everything, so I don’t see how any part of the ending would be a surprise. I guess having Arima find peace with death and being able to stop feeling sorry for himself is the point, seemed too easy and extraordinary based on his personality throughout. In reality it would take years to recover from a blow like that, probably.
I would have liked to see more character growth, to have the ending be more believable, but I appreciated having the spiritual farewell. Maybe the author thought it would be a way to bypass the lack of character growth, like a “he said his farewell, he is okay with this” when he clearly was not okay.
Be cautious about recommending this to someone that is grieving, not helpful at all and am disappointed they don’t explore this. The way they moved on from the child abuse was also distressing. While it is commendable that they touched on many subjects that are often skirted around, they waste a lot of time elsewhere, often going in circles, instead of really digging deep and leaving the viewer thinking.
This is probably because of the target audience, so we are back to the beginning, I’m too old for this.
Amazing music and animation, great quotes and comedy early on, and of course the music was amazing. I don’t think I will rewatch.
