Rainbow is one of those precious gems that get lost among the popular action/romance/silly anime, that happen to air at the same time. At first glance, it might seem as a well-worn drama set in an after-all dramatic post-war period. That 's what I thought. And I regret that thinking.. One episode was more than enough to captivate me..What is exceptionnal about this show, is the great deliverance of emotions. With no exaggerations or deficiencies, the emotions are there, the way they should be.. You 'll find yourself cry - be it of joy or of sorrow-, get angry, anticipate anxiously and share the same
...
hopes with the characters.
Let me say first that this review is my very first, so please bear with me and pardon any mistakes..
~Plot 9/10~
The story follows the lives of 7 teenagers, who have been placed in a reformatory for minor crimes. That's where they all meet and where their journey of life begins. Their daily humiliation and suffering are presented through intense realistic scenes, that make you feel uneasy, as well as a wonderful narration. In this rotten prison, where every single thing seems corrupted, the 7 boys discover the true meaning of friendship, self-sacrifice, hope and solidarity. But, of-course, not in the easy way.. Pretty much, this is the story. You definitely have seen it before, but not this well developed.
An important thing, that you should know is that the story is somehow divided in two parts. I cannnot explain more because it would be a spoiler, and i wouldn't want to "spoil" you. I can only say that the critical point is episode 14.
The first part , in my opinion, was much better than the second one, in terms of suspense and anxiety. The second part, is interesting enough, but kind of more predictable and cliched.
~Characters 9/10~
The characthers is the strong point of this show. Each one chased by his own demons, tries to fight for his life but never forgetting his friends, who come above all. Every character is unique and has his own secrets and dreams, but they all share the same love for one another. However, some characters are more highlighted, thus more likeable. Generally, the characters are nice but sometimes TOO nice, to the point where you feel like watching saints.
~Art 8/10~
The art is , for my tastes, mediocre. Some characters are drawn very nicely but others are really messed up. Especially the villains. They are actually quite creepy..Overall, I think that the art is great for this show, where you don't expect hot guys or fancy backgrounds.
~Sound 8/10~
The music is another element that is very carefully done in this show. It embodies and amplifies the emotions. The opening and the ending songs are good, not exceptionnal. The voice actors, also, do a great job.
SO TO SUM UP...
Why to watch??
Because you like dramas, uncensored violent scenes, disturbing truths, secret pasts, the feeling of justice being delivered, the journey of life with its good and bad, life and death situations, friendship between men, disgusting villains, unpredictable twists on the plot and many other things that you'll discover if you watch it..
Why NOT to watch??
I can't handle violence, I don't like men crying, heavy drama, too much injustice. Right now, I can't think of anything else..
I hope I helped you. Personally, I would recommend it to anyone. Even if it isn't your thing, just watch the first episode. You won't lose anything..
