I do wonder if webtoon need adaptations. They are in colour and very easy on the eye and not too taxing on the mind. If i am asked to choose between coloured and black and white action or fantasy stories, i will lean towards webtoon. Some of my favourite mangas have been webtoon and soul cartel, relief, lookism, GOH to name a few. I have always wanted to start TOW WEBTOON but never got to it and until the ainme finished airing i was gonna put off reading past chapter 1. I vaguely remember skimming through chapter 1 but the art was too crude that
...
i did not care for it. Once i began the anime, i realised how much effort the studio put in polishing the art to perfection. Khun is so beautiful. And that yellow haired director. Even bam. It was a feast for my eyes. I fancy good art in anime.
Since this is coming from someone who has not read the source material, it may be surprising to note how much i care so little for any deviations or shortcoming of the anime in comparison to the webtoon. Action anime can be so amazing if done well. All i want is an edge of the seat experience and KNT is not disappointing at all. Firstly there are so many questions and from what i am given to understand even the mighty webtoon is quite evasive and more questions follow with answers not too eager to show up. With a very slow but stellar world building, the plot is trudging along at snails pace. On the other hand, the anime took up many chapters whether or not leaving vital details and blew past at reasonable pace with their single cour of 13 episodes, all of them giving nail biting thrill.
I wish i could touch upon characters and the plot but honestly I don’t know what the heck is happening.
Here is what i understood from the anime adaptation:
They want to climb a tower and they compete with each other.
The ppl/conducting have questionable motives.
The fights are super awesome.
Animation graphics are on a different level.
The large lizard fellow is so cute.
Rachel may or may not be a bitch.
Bam is a simp
Khun is super HOOOT
There is magic
even the notorious attack on titan pales in comparison to his webtoon in terms of plot building.
Both out performed by stray kids are nice on the ears. So Kami no tou is really good and if the cliffhanger bothers you, its really time to catch up with the source material.

It has finally come to an end. The shortest ride for me so to speak. I completely enjoyed the ups and downs and the multitude of emotions I went though while I read KNY manga. It hurts that such a good Shōnen manga ended and I will deeply miss it. At the same time we will have to thank the author for not once dragging the story beyond reason.
KNY in all its chapters barely crossing 200th mark has one of the best art, narration and intrigue factor. The action scenes are done well for the most part. And the ending while being bittersweet
...
is the most apt one.
The anime sent me flying right between the pages of the manga and it was so good. This is the one manga where I loved the villains more than I cared for the hero team. Like all Mc tanjiro is the epitome of kindness and an embodiment of perfection. Even villains admired him. His devotion to protecting his sister cannot be more disenchanting. He is everything on paper and as as ordinary as the next guy.
MCs are either alone or they come in threes. Innosuke can be summarised in not so many words; loud, angry, ticking time bomb with no personality at all. Zenitsu on the other hand has some psass. But his personality is still unforgivably irredeemable. His thunderous whining can be heard through the manga like a lightning strike. His simping for nezuko does not picture him in a better light either.
These don’t hamper me from loving KNY :P
The hashiras for some reason deeply impacted a lot of ppl to favourite them while I was beamed with a different set of emotions. Their back stories were meant to make me sympathise but I just wasn’t. To me the tragic back stories were essential to the plot and that’s where it ended. Rengoku was the one hashira I respected. The others namely giyu obenai, matsuri, gyomei, sanemi, muichirou and the guy with three wives were not too deep and I could feel their stories has a dash of forced meaning. I cant seem to put into words how they felt like NPCs. Shinobu was the other hashira I genuinely liked. The anime also had some influence as her voice was pretty soothing and nice.
I also liked sanemis brother. He was too adorable not to like.
Kanao and nezuko were decent for heroines. Neither of them is weak and both girls were amazing in fights. Nezuko scores points for cuteness overload.
Now for the villains. Anime Muzak was hot, cool and too awesome. Manga Muzan was a person I could not come to understand towards the end. So little of his back story was revealed. There was so little to sympathise with. He should have gone down with a bang but he pulled the short end of the stick when he was unfairly downplayed and sidelined. The climax was admittedly rushed and too many loose ends remained regarding muzan. No one could wallow in pity for The most evil of all villains in KNY because he did not get those sad flashbacks when even a minor demon was spared more than 15 minutes.
Akaza was universally loved at the end of the manga. Who can despise him?
Kokushibas story was so stretched out, I don’t remember anything at all.
Douma became my new favourite. I don’t think he is any better than muzan but for some twisted reason, his art style and evil disposition attracted me the most.i want to hear his voice in the anime if it airs.
I love short mangas. KNY with 207 chapters was always fast paced, never meandered with filler like content. The plot and fight scenes were great. I liked the narrative style and the arcs were thankfully brief. The story was always linear and the author ended it in a way that leaves us to our imagination. I liked the coherent plot and clean art. I am pretty indifferent about the ending. I imagined chapter 205 somewhat in a different light. 204 to me was more beautiful and meaningful than 205 that felt forced to assuage some audience.
Like I said in the beginning, the wonderful journey has finally come to a stop. I highly recommend kimetsu no Yaiba.

if i can say my love and adoration for this anime in a few words, i dont think i am capable of it. In an industry dominated but generic shounen, dubious seinen, BSD is like a blazing torch that says "i am here.
There may or may not be a plot: so far it is just been a rivalry between port mafia and detective agency. they each thwart the nefarious plan of the other. i have been reading the manga as well. i observed that its more about superpowers clashing against each other and who gets to take advantage of the power struggle.
Character
...
depth? what is that?: dazai is the most awesome charater of all. he may be goofing around with the stupid suicide nonsense but he has the most interesting persona. his powers are as awesome as he is. kunikida is not half bad and so is the cute doctor. But nakajima is all sorts of annoying. his repeated backround story makes him as boring as his personality that needs a constant reassurance. if it wasnt nakajima's sob stories, i dont think there is too much of development in the characters other than the surface level tweaks to say nakajima or kyouka or IDK akutagawa?
sempai notice me: that is what akutagawa has been trying all along and so does chuyya. i think both have the coolest powers second and third only to dazai
weird ojisan: Mori of port mafia may not look the part but he is more cunning than he wants us to see.
Season 1 has both OP and ED ost as the best.
When BSd came out, i wasnt super excited as super power based stories were over estimated and boring. Not to mention how much ppl gushed over dazai. But my opinions changed immediately once i started bsd. Its one of the best anime i ever watched mainly because of the animation style, actions scenes and for some odd reason the color combinations and ambience. I just got pulled in and now as i watch season 3 i cant help wishing that there were more episodes to binge on. Actions scenes are awesome and my favourite scene is when dazai enters to save the day. Also over the period, i also started to like akutagawa and mori.
just cant get enough of BSD :P

i wonder when was the last time i liked an isekai anime?
It has always been on my mind, as a female anime fan, some isekai anime like arifureta, sheild hero, reincarnated as slime and many others never made it to my top favourites. I chalk it up to the scantily clad and busty female characters and sappy female leads. But the major reason is the domination of perverted virgin otaku neet MC in these stories. I could hardly bring myself to like the main hero or the members of his ever increasing harem who look for every turn to jump this sex starved
...
hero. The harem is pretty diverse from flat chested power hubs to poorly dressed bunnies to kinky masochists and to lolis. i am unable to enjoy these shows as they never focus on actual plots. standards of isekai have dipped to a new low. MC's cultivation is too OP, he gets to choose a girl from his party who may look like a child but for convenience sake is 300 years old. twice now i have seen the same trope back to back.
Will the MC ever get a friend who is a man and add him to his party? Like never.

This season had three animus, each having the potential to last in our memories as good anime; namely: kimetsu no yaiba, enen no shobotai and dr stone. While i am immensely delighted that this season is not a total bust, i am quite upset that kimetsu no yaiba has already finished airing and i cant for the life of me remember how fast 26 episodes can end in a matter of two days for me. That is how good watching kimetsu no yaiba had been.
Many who watched would have multiple reasons of his own but for me the deciding episode was Ep:4, when Muzan
...
Kibutsuji was first introduced. i cant believe that i watched a whole show stupidly waiting episode after episode in the hopes of a few minutes of screen time for this guy.
To be honest, all shounen manga adaptations are governed by some major tropes, each of which help build a character with traits that help him or her fulfill the role of a Hero. I was no new comer to the omnipresent nakama obsession or the infamous sibling rivalries or the never ending pursuit of a big dream or the incessantly reminding readers of the MC's parental love or lack there of- dead or alive or most importantly the seemingly plain and powerless Mc being backed by latent superpower that rivals that of truly experienced side characters. No shounen manga/anime can or has withstood without these. I am pretty sure Tanjiro would surpass the likes of Tomioka, shinobu and all the remaining hashiras and not to mention their eerie master in no time. It was that predictable. So kimetsu no yaiba was hardly anything i haven't already seen.
The character art was lovely indeed, Muzen kibutsuji being the most beautiful character drawing and the rest of them with their occasional chibi faces were adorable too. Whenever nezuko turned small, i felt like scooping her up and protecting her. As for the story, lets say it had a near decent plot but the whole story telling was so slow that i thought like the animators were stalling for time. Between the brief recap of the previous week's episode before every subsequent week's episode and with both the Opening and Ending Ost, and of course, Zenitsu's loud and boisterous whining, you will have to make do with what little you get. Just wish Muzan had more screen time. :D
Tanjiro checked all the boxes for an ideal shounen MC. He worked hard, had hidden talents which he cultivated in a very short span but somehow still remained super adorable. He was not completely dense and had a dead parent who may have been a powerful person too. Surprisingly, not only dead parents but he also had 4 siblings dead with only one sister who miraculously escaped death. Further he was determined to save nezuko and even carried her on his back wherever he went. If this does not spell sibling love then nothing does. Like a cherry on top he was as cantankerous as zenitsu or innosuke and super kind and friendly to even his sworn enemies. He was like a guidance counselor you never had who couldn't hold himself from spreading his worldly thoughts on right and wrong. He was made out as a sympathiser and you are constantly left to wonder if the demons were good guys after all. (same feeling i had during tokyo ghoul- doves are bad, ghouls are good :P). This guy was the whole package, wanting nothing. If i looked deeper i couldn't find too many flaws in his character. I was kind of bored with the backstories of most of the side characters however short such scenes were. I wished i liked Zenitsu but he never gave me a reason. I am sure i liked Tomioka and would like to know a little bit more about him as i would for Mr Komada senior. I liked shinobu' voice, i felt like flowing water. I wanted to see more of the hashira's fighting especially against the juni kizuki. Both the juni kizuki and the hashiras had an aura of importance and intrigue surrounding them that it made me want to see their fighting scenes more than that of any scene or scenes involving the pointless so called comedy of the tanjiro-innosuke-zenitsu trio. It was labelled under action genre wasn't it? Had there been even a single episode wholly dedicated to Muzen kibutsuji, i would have been super elated. :P If the animators had incorporated some of these i think kimetsu could have been an even better story.
Not saying i like this trend, whats with the 3d style fighting animation? kimetsu, fire force, arifureta and who knows how many. Its gonna take a while getting used to this kind animation. On the flip side, it has got a very good set of OST. Both the OP and ED are catchy and you will be humming the tunes once it gets inside of your head.
All these days i never valued any villain in any manga or anime as worthy not just because i have not seen than many anime, i have along way to go, it is just that no villain has made that kind of impression that he was awesome. The closest anyone came was izaya orihara. Kimetsu had also nearly failed me as i accidentally fell for Muzan's character design and somehow i end up squealing than give credit where its due. When he killed those five lower numbered demons, i was more attuned to how manly his voice was and how beautifully he was dressed as a woman.
To sum it, the yawn worthy and morefully touch and go demon backstories; zenitsu's very existance; shinobu's eyes and finally the number of times tanjiro screamed nezuko's name were those parts that tested my patience while i trudged trough this otherwise fast paced show. No matter how many anime we watch, heart wrenching back stories that take of half of the episodes will haunt us forever. I am team"i have not read this manga and i did not know of its existence until now". Perhaps the source material was not too big to cover two arcs i guess. None the less you cannot blame me for wanting to see more fun stuff happening.
In conclusion, kimetsu no yaiba is an amazing show to watch. Dont miss out on it just because it happens to be a generic shounen.
Now for the more pressing issue. What should i do? What should i do? The show is over ;(

I wonder if i am justifying the 8 rating i gave but please there be a season 2.
This review is coming from someone who has never played the game before or pretty much any game using the console. If i see this purely from an anime POV with no source material to fall back on, i would say its a fairly decent story with some average CG for action scenes The story is also well paced and it has some interesting premise. The ending was also unexpected.
Story: If i compare P5A with P4A, the former has at least a semblance of a plot while
...
the latter was fragmented too much to the point that i lost coherence of the plot with each episode towards the later half of the season. On the bright side, it was fun watching this slice of life anime as it explored dark themes coupled with an interesting supernatural backstory.
Art: The character art has some justice done on them. But i cannot say the same for the animation. The CG for battle scenes alone were so out of place that even an amateur like me could see how the 3D effect was ruining the animation itself. I am not a fan of this style of graphics.
Character: I want to like Ren not only for his character design but also for his personality but he spoke so less and he just had not translated his inside-the-palace charisma onto his real life image. Like P4A before, the main players of the 'phantom thieves' are too docile to accept the persona and become a part of the team. I saw no resistance or betrayal of sorts that develop the characters. Ann who is vehement not be objectified invariably gets a persona which is the very definition of sexism.
Akechi: Sometimes i felt like i was watching a conversation between kira and L. Only that akechi's suspicion on Ren did not amount to a 3 percent chance he could be a phantom thief. I loved the ending though. While i did expect something along those lines, honestly i could not predict how the animators executed it though. So its obvious i am looking forward to a season 2.
Story: Similar to P4A the story style is same with the main chara entering a different dimension or metaverse. There is no point in trying to figure out anime logic. they can change the feelings without that person actually knowing that is heart has been invaded through some inexplicable means. The more confusing part is how they interact with desires itself which somehow is able to recognize ppl and situations. The explanations were of little to no help.In short this anime has created a series of NPCs of the characters as well. The story plays a lot by the ear. Everything is safe or if it was the animators' s idea to make it viewer friendly at the same time brushing against darker themes like abuse and such.
Overall: Loved the building up of suspense. i understand why this gets all the hate but for all the animus that ever stuck to the source material, this is no so bad. Without perceiving at P5A as an adaptation of a popular game i was easily kept entertained for the two days i spent binging on this. I dont mind recommending to those who have never played this game but want some near cool anime to watch for this season.

There are only 226 chapters. The art is really beautiful with colors. There are not many pages but the pacing is very good.
Relife is an amazing webtoon. It has one of the most powerful conversations. The concept in this manga is wonderful. While shounen manga mostly target teenagers, this one adds grown up characters into the mix. Unlike other manga, this one is pretty concise. It may have spanned over 3 years of serialization but the amount of detours it took has been reasonably less.
The last few chapters are a roller coaster ride of all kinds of emotions. The ending admittedly has a
...
twist to it's extremely predictable climax, it was still a great read. There is a good balance between the plot and characters in all the arcs. In shounen manga it is natural to see dialogue focusing on friendship and some morals essentially meant to be fed to young readers in the hopes of molding them into better individuals. Relife on the other hand focuses predominantly on the hard truths of reality that grownups suffer through their journey into adulthood while also emphasizing on the importance of friendship and happiness. It drives us to evaluate ourselves introspectively. It is nowhere so heavy but some view points are worth pondering over.
Kaizaki arata is one of the best adult characters. He is for the major part essayed as an adorable guy with a streak of innocence to him. In many panels his design is that of a chibi with two pink blush patches on his cheeks. He is not someone anyone takes seriously but his sense of right and wrong are on the mark. The aura he emanates is stronger as an adult seeing as he struggles to transition into his role of a high schooler. At other times he behaves more like a teenage girl playing along with the cheerfully devious Onoya. His inability to pass tests aside, his one year in the relife program consisted of setting up couples and solving teenage girl's friendship issues. It is interesting to see his relationship developing with young ppl as he tries to figure out his place in the small bunch. He is way more mature at solving disputes and guiding the kids and funnily no one suspects a thing. While readers are smart enough to immediately suspect Hishiro, poor kaizaki does not figure that out at all. The guy has been designed only to give support without much going on in the head. His romance with Hishiro is sweet at best as he comes to terms with the situation at hand. He is very realistic. The way his eyes glaze over as he idolizes youth is the highlight. Also the number of times he has to remind himself that he is an adult and the other person is a brat is cute. He is my new favorite.
Relife program:
This manga has an amazing concept. For adult readers it is an intriguing subject as all of us would love to have a shot at life for a second time. But in our cases we would appreciate a chance to set things right. Because a year lost is an opportunity cost. It's a thought provoking story where neets are rehabilitated through a process where they can spend a year being high school students with all expenses paid and are guaranteed employment upon successful completion of the program. Shady organizations can apparently glam up things with companies regarding a one year gap of prospective recruits that is wiped off the face of time. In the end the memories are altered a lot unless it's the main characters who with the power of plot armor conveniently escape any such harsh move to get their happy ending. Not that they can be blamed, readers these days are pretty sensitive, authors are hard pressed to satisfy them. The program makes less sense. The emphasis on sending subjects to high school is illogical as ppl could lose their way during college as well. Besides both the subjects were capable individuals and they were not mess ups. Kaizaki is a helpful person and the guilt of not standing up for the weak adversely affected him to the point of giving up his excessively stuffy job which in all fairness was the root cause of his troubles. Hishiro also had only her poor communication that stood in the way of her already successful career. These superficial defects did not warrant for a relife at high school. College or mock company would have been more apt as this story had more potential with adults for all characters. With 200 odd chapters and one year of program duration very little is accomplished. The judging for both the maturity level and yardstick for success of the program are incomprehensible. To be honest, the number of challenges and its degree of difficulty are also bare minimum. The potential that the concept brought to the story is not fully utilized either. Where a lot of things could have happened, plot dragged and the ending was rushed. Not much is known about the organization or where they get their funds from or even how they profit from these experiments.
Hishiro.
As soon as she was introduced many would have suspected of her being part of the experiment. It's that obvious. For a high schooler she is too stiff and no adult would be that point blank. Since it's possible that ppl with pigheadedness could exist, she is still unbelievably clueless. There are times when she is so annoying but she reflects on herself from time to time. If she was capable then why did she fail the first time? Does she really need kaizaki to realize to finish her mission? It's to be noted, someone with her kind of personality does a 180 when kaizaki arrives. One can clearly see that the manga is kaizaki dominated. In the beginning she comes of as bossy and she gradually gets better at communication. There has been considerable improvement in her personality.
Kariu, ogha and others:
These are the kids who are forced to affect and get affected by the experiment with none the wiser of what is happening. Kaizaki and Hishiro unwittingly impact huge changes in their lives by guiding kariu and ogha with their relationship troubles which could affect the natural balance but memory wiping can conveniently erase the existence of the subjects to a mere dot on the minds of the teenagers. Since we have 222 chapters of teenage angst, there is no conceivable character development of these ppl. They are very accepting of anything thrown at them. At the same time you don't feel like you want anything more from them either. As far a friend making is concerned, arata and chizuru succesfully form a small group of trustworthy ppl who are pretty meddlesome, stalking included.
Onoya and Yoake;
The support division of Kanto region is hilarious. Their character design and personality are in sync with kaizaki and Hishiro. Those two are very supportive and their younger versions are adorable. Since the adult characters are deliberately portrayed are clumsy and cute to cover up for their lack teenage angst, some of many of their conversations are full of serious life lessons. It's relatable most of the time. Have to admit, they can effortlessly switch between serious to comic at the drop of a hat. I can't help shipping Onoya and Yoake. It is one of the better ship compared to oghaXkariu or chizuruXarata. I love how both Onoya and Yoake lurk in the shadow gently nudging the subjects to make their own choice and changing them from within. Though they do shake up things a bit and involve a bit more than necessary, the point is Crystal clear: no one will give you the answer.you have to find it on your own, Classic.
Everything is predictable as expected of a shoujo manga. Repetition of panels has become popular to fill up space. Flashbacks of scenes and conversations keep turning up at exciting junctures. One of the downside to manga is that we as readers have a reasonably good memory and sadly these flashbacks are forcefully chiseled onto our minds.. I was not thrilled with the climax. What followed was rushed a lot and I hoped for a different kind of ending
I may be in over my head gushing over this webtoon but for an adult who has been reading lots of Young adult stories, a webtoon which showcases adult characters is something worth praising.

Last season it was net juu susume and this season its wotakoi. This feels amazing. When the main characters of a slice of life anime are adults, it would definitely be a good watch. Wotakoi does not disappoint. It is the best. We as anime watchers or gamer or cos-players or as manga readers are thrilled when there is an anime that focuses on our plight as who we are and what we like. Wotakoi is about two pairs of otaku couples who are slowly easing into a relationship when they already have common grounds. It makes us wonder what it is like when two
...
ppl strike up a conversation that both of them are comfortable with especially when the topic is familiar to them.
The character line up is fantastic. There are narumi and Hanako who are both fujoishi and they battle out ships the way way we yaoi fans do. Then there are kabakura and hirotaka, the cute redhead who loves his manga and anime as much as the megane who cant stay away from his gaming console. There is also the extremely adorable naoya and his potential tomboy partner.
Every episode is blush worthy. I love the kabakura-hinako couple more than hirotaka-narumi. The former is steadier with a long history while the latter is fumbling with their relationship goals. It is frustrating that hirotaka-narumi pair takes forever to make a move and we still dont see them kiss. That one time between kabakura and hinako is all we get. Nevertheless its is adorable whether its narumi cooking for hirotaka or them going on a date and ending up taking about otaku stuff or even the constant banter of hinako and kabakura. I cant get enough of the 11 episodes.
Most importanytly it is great to crush on cute but grownup guys.

Every season has a warm slice of life anime and tada kun koi wa shinai is this season's soothing romance with a dash of comedy. Before it even aired i had lots of expectations. The summary sounded like it will be something new in contrast to regular romcoms. Granted it had an array of beautiful scenery, nice art and the animation is lovely.
But the title was as deceptive as the ending was predictably boring. While i had reservations regarding every episode as intensively childish, i had more such on the ending alone. I am still trying to wrap my mind around the conveniently ridiculous
...
idea of how a princess of a small country goes off to japan with just a secretary and no guards? Her family like every other family in anime turned a blind eye to it because you either die or live to be invisible NPCs and are considered lucky to get a special mention. She randomly enrolled in a school which as per rules shall not verify the background of transfer students and gave the sole right of finding the secret to the hero/love interest. Being someone who watches anime, i have a watched a reasonable number of animus and it is baffled me when i see theresa knew only of "rainbow shogun" and for what it was worth, was insanely cheesy.
Unfortunately there was no chemistry between Theresa and tada whatsoever. How could there be? Tada the quiet photograpy nerd was was too busy dwelling in his sad backstory to actually notice a girl much less fall in love. He was notoriously in need of the female interest to bring light to his soul.
This anime had some really funny romance in it. It went like this: Alec likes Charles , Charles likes Theresa,Theresa likes tada and apparently tada likes Theresa too. If you thought franxx was corny wait until you watch tada kun.
I felt really sorry for Alec and Charles though. Even if he did let Theresa go there was no way he would pick Alec and sadly it should have been Alec and tada who were heart broken. Thanks to shoujo anime rule no 1- even if the MCs have no feelings for each other they will be forced to come together.
When tada 'realized' his love for Theresa- whatever triggered it and went to the tiny nation, i was inwardly worried for the fate of this anime. i knew how it will go down.
Anime logic is irrefutable as it glamours over the fact that tada and Theresa had been acquainted for not more than 2 seasons.
Too bad Charles buckled. tada might have fought his fear and flown to Theresa. He might have battled against water current to retrieve the invite. He might have even mustered the courage to confess to an engaged princess. It still was not fair to Charles who had to give her up because the plot made him to do so.
The plot was nothing far from ordinary with some outdoorsy activity and majority of which was cat chasing and photography. This anime had a cliched character line up. It was a cocktail of a brooding hero, a perverted and clueless senpai, one i look dowdy on outside but am foxy on the inside secret idol girl, a cute self obsessed best friend and a cat. Now the cat seemed to have hit it big. Add to this one cheerful but plain foreigner, a red head and a hot tall handsome guy. And the drink you get is "tada kun can fall in love"
What needed an explanation was why the hell does tada speak in Japanese to the castle guards? Even ijjuin uses english broken or otherwise.

CONTAINS SPOILERS. AS PER LATEST CHAPTER. SUBJECT TO ALTERATIONS
This is an update as per the latest chapters. Is it me or is the story and art getting every bit as chaotic as tangled wires? If not for the anime I cannot make half of what is going in on the manga. I am missing the old style where things made a lot of sense. While my initial impressions of major characters remain the same, I still feel burdened with having to remember millions of minor characters and the lack of a definite plot is nagging at me. Sometimes I feel its just fine to skip

a chapter or two and I am pretty sure I might’ve have not missed out on much. Characters still lack personality. There is no actual development for MC but the villain has been getting OP upgrades while a desperate attempt is made at finding new ways of competitions for deku and company to participate in. Let’s see how things pan out
PRELIMINARY THOUGHTS TILL CHAPTER 182
The best thing about boku no hero academia is in its addictive story. Amongst big names like naruto, bleach etc BNHA comes out with a fresh and modern undertone for a shounen manga. Unlike older manga, bnha has less complicated dialogues and a more fluid art style. Its arcs are relatively shorter and has a decent pace attached to it. The battle scenes are crisp there by increasing the content. On the flip side, character backstory of the MC is rampant with repetitive flashbacks.
PLOT:
There is no want of interesting plot developments as each arc has unique and linear story line. There is coherence in the narration and speech bubbles contain minimum to no nonsense in conversations. It is an entirely fun read. Waiting for a seventeen page chapter every week can be nerve breaking as the manga is really awesome.
CHARACTERS:
BNHA has a unique quality of providing many characters reasonable plot space. We get to see multiple characters developing to aid the plot. This could be annoying as it becomes cluttered with too much info to keep track of. In this manga you see lots of character types ripped off from popular manga. BSD, Naruto to name a few.
Midoriya:
Izuku Midoriya is different from the run on the mill shounen protagonists. He
appears cute and sweet but is a tactician. In a battle, he can prioritize his course of action with the help of predictions. He studies his opponents behavior and is less reckless in events of pressure. Since this deviates a lot from what a mc ought to be, the author throws in a character flaw. Midoriya is a total wet blanket. He is such a good guy who will pull out the best in his opponent even if it means he loses badly. Theoretically speaking he has makings of hero but power wise, he is yet to prove why he should be the greatest. He does gradually transforms into a self reliant person so its only a few more years of serialization before you see midoriya as the greatest hero.
Majority of shounen manga is of the view that a MC is that powerless but strong willed guy who overcomes obstacles through sheer perseverance and hard work. They tend to be close range combatants. The second hero who is definitely several levels above the MC still comes a close second. The difference in skill set is obvious and through the power of "nakama", all the true efforts of the second hero fails in the face of the apparently cheerful and not to mention reckless MC. In that sense, deku is pretty powerless and when he does get powered up, he winds up getting severely handicapped by his quirk that he cannot survive without outside help. This situation gets slightly better when he takes his quirk up by a notch or three.
The frustrating part is that the author spends too much time polishing rest of the characters and Deku is left with so little screen time when it comes to battles. He either gets the last scenes or is finished off in the beginning. His power improvement over the span of 180 or so chapters is minimal. He possesses One For All which is a physical power boost quirk and yet he loses all the time or accomplishes so little.
He gets sidelined in a flurry of emotional and assertive dialogues. He does so little in most of the battles. He keeps saying he wants to get stronger but has not gotten stronger enough to go independently against anyone, much less bakugo and sadly he lost there too. In the recent chapters he is still cushioned by some one or other while he grapples to control the power. He was made to participate in a futile battle with a minor villain even if he did win, there was some talk-no-jutsu working its course in the background. It did not seem so right for a hero's starting line match.
Shouta Todoroki:
Ice and flames make him too awesome. His personality is decent. His backstory adds more depth to his person. He has the makings of a number 1 hero. His relationship with Deku is healthy. He has half a head full of red hair. that wins in my books. He is adorable and innocent especially in the provisional training course. In terms of abilities and capabilities, he is way above Deku and many other Pro heroes.
Bakugo:
If Naruto were to switch his personality with sasuke, the result is bakugo. He is powerful with cunning techniques but irritatingly loud. While being obsessed with power and fame, he shows his wrath on deku all the time. There is nothing special to him. There is an unhealthy rivalry flowing between the two. He is as feisty as his quirk. His interactions with children is hilarious to watch. It is not just his loudness that annoys readers. Its probably how he picks fight with Deku merely to channel his explosive thoughts. Occasionally he is understanding and all other times he bounces back to his one dimensional design.
Rest of characters:
Aizawa, All might, Froppy, Uarvity, Red riot, dark shadow, lemillion and so many others do one hell of a job supporting this story. We see them fully involved in every arc. Some are lucky to get a backstory too.
Villains:
Sad to say this but the villains are pretty colorless although they pretend to have depth. Shigaraki and his bunch of merry men are nothing but a ragtag group of misfits or psychos whose personalities are not fully developed. The chisaki group was a shade better but again potential was wasted. The entire arc had so much potential but they could not keep the momentum alive for long. I guess the Shigaraki team is meant to be the last boss as the manga snuffs out any other villain as soon it fires off one.
ART
Art in action scenes need to be less chaotic. Sometimes without the help of anime, it is hard to follow the fight scenes. Swift movements need better capturing. Character art on the other hand is really nice. Justice is done on Stationary objects and Backgrounds.
Since shounen is aimed at teenage boys, its often riddled with stories reiterating the importance of morals. It is not surprising if the hero reduces the villain to a good guy. In BNHA it is not so pronounced. Authors are prone to push their ideals of right and wrong onto the readers through his MC which could come of pretty strong. BNHA also has some idealism loosely thrown around the manga but its vehemence is mild as is the temperament of Deku . BNHA is just a simple story of Heroes Vs Villains. With simple moves, the story potential and character potential is kept stagnant. The heroes are bound to win, nothing more nothing less.
The shortcomings of a shounen manga are that they fall in to following the tropes unconsciously. If you look deeper there is no definite plot. The narrative is more like a record of events that led to deku's incumbent victory in the future. Since it is an easy read, we would have just breezed past 182 chapters. Then there are the characters who are growing along with the story honing their skills. Altogether its well created. This manga deserves a rating not less than 8 for quality of art style, storyboard, characters, narration and overall speed and developments.
