I'll start this review out by acknowledging that my opinion is a very unpopular one. This anime has quite the following, and it's been described as the "rebirth of classic anime," or something like that.

Personally, I found almost no enjoyment in this anime. The battles are drawn-out and boring. The characters are underdeveloped, stereotypical, and frankly, incredibly annoying. Satsuki is the only character that I could actually tolerate.

The OP is all right, I guess, but nothing special. The background music is more interesting than the battles could ever hope to be, but it ends up just being distracting.

The plot is bizarre, and makes very little ... sense. Any quality that it may have had was thrown away and replaced by disgusting amounts of fanservice. People have argued that it was a "critique" of fanservice, and mocked it, but the "It's making fun of the genre!" argument can only go so far. Plain and simple: the fanservice was excessive, derogatory, and unnecessary.
If you're not grossed out already, get this: a character is incestuously molested for /absolutely no reason/.

In my experience, fanservice has been used as a replacement for good writing quite a bit. This anime is a prime example.

There isn't much to say about the characters. The main character, Ryuko, is irritating and has unclear motives. The sidekick/comedic relief character, Mako, is annoying to the point of physical pain. I would love Satsuki if she were in any other anime, but KLK treats her character incredibly poorly.

The art is good, but everything else is so dreadful that I can hardly appreciate it. Please do not waste your time with this anime. I like Studio Trigger (Gurren Lagann, Little Witch Academia, and even Inferno Cop were infinitely better than this trash heap), but I cannot find it within myself to feel anything but intense hatred toward Kill la Kill.

This anime is a breath of fresh air to the horror genre, which has been relying on common tropes for far too long.

I read the Another manga before I watched the anime, and I can say confidently that the manga is 10s across the board for story, art, character development, and enjoyment. A few things are changed in the anime (I can't say what they are, because of spoilers), but not enough to make me enjoy it any less. The anime explains things just as well as the manga does, and the art is at the same level.

One of my favorite things about this ... anime is the character design. All of them are visually appealing, and even the minor characters are unique enough to be easily differentiated. Personality-wise, they are interesting and most of them have a well-developed background/character arc.

As for the plot, it is extremely confusing for the first few episodes, but everything begins to fall into place later on. This is certainly an anime that requires brain power, so if you're looking for a fluffy time-waster, go somewhere else (there's a whole genre for that type of thing).

The OP leaves a bit to be desired in subtlety, but that isn't this anime's strong point. The ED song is hauntingly gorgeous and worth a listen, even if you don't end up watching the anime.

Another is my favorite horror anime, and one of my favorites of any genre. Overall, it's about a 9.7 - 9.8. Definitely watch it if you're a horror fan. Even if you aren't, this one may change your mind.
