This series had a lot of potential, but it was wasted by a storyline which couldn't decide if it was a sports anime, or a romance series. As such, it didn't really commit to either story, which left the anime in quite a mess.
Of the three main characters, Yuri Plisetsky was the most interesting, as he was the character who had the most well fleshed out backstory, sadly he was also the character who had the lest screen time. Victor wasn't really given any backstory, and by the time we got it, it was very little too late. Victor could easily be

seen as a walking plot device, there to motivate the flip flopping, and confusing narrative of the protagonist Yuri Katsuki.
The best thing that can be said for the series was the opening musical sequence, quite a catchy tune. And the hope that this series, as average as it is, because of it's commercial success (most especially amongst the young female demographic) lead other studios or writers to come up with a better type of story, with far more interesting characters and a far more committed and less ambiguous gay relationship.
This isn't a bad story, but it's not what I'd consider that good, and it certainly doesn't live up the hype. Nowhere near it actually.
