Gimai Seikatsu offers a fresh perspective on the relationship between step-siblings Yuta and Saki, who are not blood-related. Unlike typical anime that rely on upbeat, conventional tropes, this series employs artistic techniques often seen in art films.
The use of meticulous cinematography, wide shots, and panning shots effectively captures the realistic and grounded nature of human interactions within a household. It avoids fan service, respecting the intelligence of viewers who appreciate this storytelling style.
The plot seamlessly intertwines with slice-of-life scenarios, exploring the psychological dynamics between the protagonists as they navigate their new relationship. This unique and thoughtful approach to a rom-com may not appeal
...
to everyone, but for those seeking a distinctive experience amidst the usual rom-com fare, Gimai Seikatsu is a must-watch.

Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia is a poignant anime that delves into the complex inner lives of two high school insomniacs, Nakami and Isaki, through their shared late-night encounters in a deserted school observatory.
While some viewers might dismiss this anime as boring or monotonous, I believe such opinions stem from a misinterpretation of its thematic depth. The series excels in its grounded, realistic portrayal of adolescent struggles, exploring personal trauma and the emotional battles each character faces.
The relationship between Isaki and Nakami is exquisitely crafted. As they find solace in each other's company, their mutual encouragement helps them confront and overcome their traumas, fostering a profound
...
respect and burgeoning love. This dynamic is a testament to the show's sophisticated narrative, avoiding common anime clichés of teen romance.
Cinematographically, the anime shines with its careful use of motion and angles that poignantly capture the nuanced emotional states—be it melancholy, loneliness, joy, anxiety, or sadness. The opening and ending themes, performed by Aiko and Homecomings respectively, beautifully complement the mood and themes, enhancing the overall emotional resonance of the series.
In my view, "Kimi wa Houkago Insomnia" approaches a masterclass in romance anime. It is well-written, thoughtfully produced, and free from the usual unrealistic tropes found in many teen romance stories. I give it a solid 10 out of 10—an essential watch for anyone who appreciates deep, realistic character exploration and subtle storytelling.

Frieren is an extremely beautifully crafted anime that is made of love, passion, heart and soul poured into every frame. I would like to go on a little tangent before I delve into my full thoughts on Frieren.
From the epic narratives of Vinland Saga S2 and Jujutsu Kaisen S2 to the enchanting worlds & mysteries of The Apothecary Diaries and Heavenly Delusion, this year has been a testament to the diverse and evolving landscape of anime. Every anime resonates differently to different demographic of audience or audiences with different life experiences and background. Therefore, there's no such thing as an objectively best anime of
...
all time - even if technically it is flawless. It won't matter if it doesn't connect with an individual on an emotional level. What is important is that we all celebrate the beauty & joy that anime has brought to the community regardless of what anime you think is the best. MAL rankings should not be a compass for what anime connects best for every individual, and that we continue to explore hidden gems in hopes of finding our own personal best anime.
That being said, Frieren is possibly one my favorite anime of all time, and definitely in my top 5. This anime weaves a narrative that is as visually stunning as it is emotionally resonant, encapsulating a nearly flawless execution of plot, dialogue, character design, art, cinematography, voice acting and music. The thematic depth of the series, with its contemplation on time, regret, loss, and the human condition, mirrors the innermost reflections of an audience that has navigated the complexities of life.
Its uncanny ability to forge profound connections with characters, sometimes in mere moments of screen time, and to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. The search for a flower, the act of gift-giving, the remembrance of a favorite meal, or the shared experience of a sunset – all are rendered with a depth of emotion that is both beautiful and poignant. The series achieves a rare balance, making each character, whether protagonist or antagonist, memorable and empathetic.
The transformative power of this anime has been acknowledged even by those who initially underestimated its impact. Prominent voices within the anime community, such as the notable OG anime YouTuber Gigguk, have evolved from skepticism to acclaim, recognizing Frieren not just as a top contender but as a life-altering experience. This shift underscores the anime's capacity to touch deeply upon universal themes, offering lessons on the preciousness of time and the value of relationships
For fans of deep fantasy that skillfully intertwines action, drama, and comedy - this anime presents a narrative richness akin to the epic sagas of literature. Its well-crafted plot, engaging characters, and soul-stirring soundtrack are likely to resonate with a wide audience, bringing a sense of joy and reflection. It has a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of existence and the enduring power of connection.
I highly recommend this anime and I hope that for those that decides to watch it, this anime brings as much joy and contemplation to you as it has to me, serving as a cherished journey into the realm of beautiful storytelling.

Apothecary Diaries is a a unique blend of mystery, intrigue, and historical fiction set against the backdrop of an ancient imperial court politics. This anime offers a captivating glimpse into a world of intrigue and power, with a clever and resourceful heroine who consistently defies expectations.
The biggest standout of this anime is the protagonist, Maomao. Maomao is, in the simplest terms a unique blend of Gregory House and Sherlock Holmes - but a female protagonist done right. She is downright a complex character that doesn't always adhere to social norms or expectations. She often acts based on her own judgments and insights, even if
...
it means going against the grain or employing unorthodox methods. Yet, she acts with the wisdom of not overstepping the boundaries of imperial hierarchy norms and knows when to choose her actions or words carefully.
Breaking the recent norms of Hollywood's overemphasis of strong female lead that is all too perfect - She is neither a damsel in distress nor a traditional heroine; instead, she navigates a male-dominated world with cunning and strategy, often outsmarting those using her strengths at her disposal.
This anime on a surface level is series of mysteries or challenge that Maomao has to overcome. Without giving too much away, it is subtly contributing to the larger purpose or narrative. This is in my opinion, what makes Apothecary Diaries an underrated anime as it slowly builds up the story with complex interwoven incidences and plots that serves a a bigger purpose - and many wrongly dismissing it as yet another slice of life anime with mysteries that doesn't have a overarching purpose.
The animation is beautiful with the right choice of color palette to compliment the setting, and not forgetting the unique beat of the OPs and mellow renderings of the ED (which is one of my fav ED tracks of 2023 season) . I highly recommend this anime if you welcome the setting of historical fiction with loads of mysteries & puzzles and realistic strong female protagonist. Personally, I would rate this anime an easy top 5 best anime of 2023 .

Naruto is recommended because it offers a unique blend of action, adventure, and heartfelt storytelling that has resonated with a diverse audience. Despite its imperfections, the series has left a lasting legacy and will continue to be enjoyed by both new and seasoned anime enthusiasts.
Let's start with the obvious elephant in the room -
1. The notorious filler episodes. "Naruto" is plagued by filler arcs that sometimes feel like a detour through the ninja equivalent of a scenic route. A lot of it are outright cringe-worthy and has no significance or much value added to the main story.
Pacing Predicament:
2. The pacing in "Naruto" is a bit
...
like trying to sprint a marathon. While the main story arcs are engaging, there are moments when the series seems to stall, especially in the earlier episodes.
3. Flashbacks are to "Naruto" what ramen is to Naruto himself – a staple. Yet, there are times when the flashbacks are reused to the point of inducing eye-rolls. We get it; Naruto had a tough childhood.
4. Sakura, the resident kunoichi of Team 7, gets a fair share of criticism for her lack of growth and action compared to her ninja peers. It's a missed opportunity for a more dynamic and developed character.
5. World Building - Inconsistencies in Technological Progression. The series incorporates both traditional and advanced technology, with a mix of feudal-era settings and modern elements. Like many viewers, I find the progression of technology in the world inconsistent, raising questions about the timeline and development of certain technologies.
Now, for the Good parts of Naruto:
1. The side characters in Naruto are often considered one of the anime's notable strengths and contribute to what sets it apart from other series.
Naruto introduces a vast array of characters, each with distinct personalities, abilities, and backgrounds. From the members of Team 7 to other ninjas in the Hidden Leaf Village and beyond, the series provides a diverse and memorable cast. Many side characters undergo significant development throughout the series. The narrative takes the time to explore their personal stories, challenges, and growth, giving viewers a deeper understanding of their characters.
Unlike some anime where secondary characters might fade into the background during battles, Naruto emphasizes the strategic roles of its side characters. Each ninja has a unique set of skills, and their contributions often play crucial roles in major conflicts. The series showcases a wide variety of fighting styles, jutsu techniques, and combat strategies among its characters. This diversity adds depth to the battles and makes each character's approach to combat distinctive.
2. Naruto introduces a wide array of characters, each with unique personalities, backgrounds, and motivations. The character development, particularly of the main cast, is a standout aspect, showcasing growth, maturity, and the impact of their experiences.
3. The series is adept at delivering emotionally charged narratives. Whether exploring themes of friendship, loss, or determination, "Naruto" has poignant storytelling moments that resonate with viewers on a deep, emotional level.
Iconic Soundtrack:
4. Naruto features a memorable and iconic soundtrack that enhances the emotional impact of key scenes. The music, composed by Toshio Masuda and Yasuharu Takanashi, has become synonymous with the series and contributes to its overall atmosphere.
5. Epic Battles and Animation - The anime is renowned for its intense and well-animated battle sequences. The choreography of the ninja fights, the utilization of jutsu, and the strategic elements in combat contribute to the series' excitement and visual appeal.
6. The series employs long-term story arcs that allow for extensive character development and world-building. Viewers witness the characters' growth over time, and the overarching narrative creates a sense of continuity and purpose.

Bleach burst onto the scene with its compelling premise and dynamic characters, experiences a notable shift in quality after the exhilarating Soul Society arc. While the series maintains elements of its initial brilliance, the subsequent arcs struggle to recapture the same magic, resulting in a narrative that becomes more average than exceptional.
The early episodes of Bleach shine brightest during the Soul Society arc. The stakes are high, character development is robust, and the intricate plot twists keep viewers on the edge of their seats. This arc not only establishes the foundation of the series but also showcases the potential for greatness.
One notable downfall comes in
...
the form of pacing issues and an abundance of filler episodes. Post-Soul Society, the narrative often loses its focus, meandering through less impactful storylines. This not only disrupts the flow of the main plot but also dilutes the intensity and urgency established in the earlier arcs.
The later arcs witness a dilution of the series' core themes. The intricate exploration of the afterlife and the consequences of interfering with spiritual realms, which was a strong aspect in the early arcs, takes a backseat as the narrative becomes more entangled in battles and power struggles.
While some characters continue to evolve, others suffer from stagnant development or, in some cases, undergo abrupt transformations that may not align with their established personalities. This inconsistency in characterization can lead to a sense of detachment from certain characters.
The main protagonist - Ichigo's primary evolution is often confined to his fighting abilities. While his prowess in battles escalates, the personal and emotional facets of his character development remain overshadowed by the relentless focus on combat. This imbalance diminishes the opportunity for a more holistic exploration of Ichigo's character.
On a positive note, the animation quality remains consistently spectacular throughout the series. The fluidity of fight sequences and the meticulous attention to character designs contribute to the visual appeal that keeps viewers invested in the later arcs despite narrative shortcomings.
Bleach remains a nostalgic journey for many fans, including I, who were captivated by its early brilliance. However, the anime's subsequent arcs fail to sustain the same level of excellence. The transition from exceptional to average leaves a lingering sense of what could have been, as viewers witness a series with immense potential not fully realized.
Bleach holds a special place in the hearts of many for its gripping Soul Society arc and the initial promise it displayed. However, the subsequent arcs struggle to maintain the same level of quality, with pacing issues, repetitive tropes, and a dilution of core themes detracting from the overall experience. Despite its flaws, Bleach continues to be a beloved part of anime history, with its early brilliance acting as a testament to the heights the series once achieved.
Bleach Soul Society Arc: 10/10. A must watch - at least until the conclusion of Soul Society Arc.
Post Soul Society Arc: 6/10.

Makoto Shinkai's "Byousoku 5 Centimeter" (5 Centimeters Per Second) stands as a cinematic masterpiece that transcends the boundaries of traditional romance anime. Its portrayal of relationships is a poignant and realistic exploration of the complexities, distances, and fragility that often define the human experience of love.
"Byousoku 5 Centimeter" masterfully captures the theme of distance, both physical and emotional, as a pervasive force shaping the characters' lives. The narrative unfolds in three interconnected parts, each focusing on different stages of the protagonists' lives and the ever-present, often insurmountable, distances that separate them.
The characters are meticulously crafted with relatable flaws and aspirations. Their struggles, doubts, and the
...
passage of time mirror the complexities inherent in real-life relationships. The authenticity of their experiences resonates deeply, making the emotional journey all the more impactful.
The film doesn't shy away from the less glamorous aspects of love. It navigates through themes of unrequited affection, missed opportunities, and the inevitability of change. These universal experiences make "Byousoku 5 Centimeter" a resonant portrayal of the human condition.
Shinkai's storytelling eschews idealized notions of romance, opting for a more nuanced exploration of the ebb and flow of relationships. The narrative invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences, acknowledging the bittersweet nature of love and the inevitability of change.
Time, portrayed as both an ally and a foe, plays a central role in the narrative. The film underscores how relationships evolve over time, sometimes drawing people closer together, and at other times, creating chasms that are difficult to bridge. "Byousoku 5 Centimeter" is not merely an anime; it's a lyrical meditation on the human heart's journey through the intricate tapestry of love. Its realistic portrayal of relationships, combined with stunning visuals and a soul-stirring soundtrack, cements its status as a timeless work of art. As viewers immerse themselves in the poignant beauty of Shinkai's creation, they are reminded that love, with all its complexities, is a delicate dance that echoes through the corridors of time.

"The Last: Naruto the Movie" marks the conclusion of the Naruto Shippuden series, providing fans with a mix of emotional highs, stunning visuals, and a romantic focus that serves as both a satisfying resolution and a point of contention.
One cannot help but be impressed by the movie's animation quality. The fight scenes are fluid, and the character designs are consistent with the established aesthetic of the series. The attention to detail in portraying familiar landscapes and jutsu techniques adds to the visual appeal.
Unlike its predecessors, "The Last" leans heavily into the romantic aspect of Naruto's life, particularly his relationship with Hinata. While this departure from
...
the typical action-oriented plot may be refreshing for some, it might leave others longing for a more traditional Naruto storyline.
The film explores the emotional growth of Naruto and Hinata, giving them the spotlight they deserve. Naruto's journey from the lonely, spirited ninja to the respected Hokage is palpable, and Hinata's character is given depth beyond her initial shy demeanor.
One notable critique is the pacing, with certain segments feeling rushed. The focus on romance may come at the expense of a more intricate plot. The new villain, while serving a purpose, lacks the depth and development seen in some of the series' more memorable antagonists.
"The Last" successfully taps into the nostalgia of long-time fans. The film delivers closure for the characters and the world they inhabit, offering a glimpse into their lives beyond the climactic battles of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
The movie manages to evoke a range of emotions, especially for viewers invested in Naruto's journey. The poignant moments, coupled with a fitting soundtrack, provide a sense of closure and contribute to the bittersweet atmosphere of the film.
Viewer reception may vary based on expectations. Those seeking a romantic resolution and a character-driven story may find "The Last" deeply satisfying. However, fans with a stronger preference for action-packed narratives might feel a bit underwhelmed.
In my opinion, "The Last: Naruto the Movie" is a commendable addition to the Naruto saga, offering a well-animated and emotionally resonant farewell to the beloved characters. It pays homage to the series' roots while ushering in a new chapter in the lives of Naruto and his friends. For fans who have followed Naruto's journey, this film serves as a heartfelt and satisfying conclusion to a legendary tale.

Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-hen stands as an undisputed masterpiece in the anime world, offering a spellbinding narrative that transcends the boundaries of the samurai genre. This four-episode OVA, also known as "Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal," is a stunning testament to the power of storytelling, character depth, and visual excellence, making it a must-watch for anime enthusiasts and fans of Rurouni Kenshin alike.
At the heart of Tsuioku-hen's brilliance is its masterful storytelling. The narrative unfolds with a poetic elegance, expertly tracing the origins of Kenshin Himura and the events that shaped him into the iconic and enigmatic swordsman fans know and love. The storytelling is not
...
merely an exploration of Kenshin's past but a profound examination of the societal upheavals and personal tragedies that defined the turbulent Meiji era.
The character development in Tsuioku-hen is nothing short of exceptional. Kenshin's evolution from the idealistic young Hitokiri Battosai to the tormented and introspective rurouni is portrayed with a depth that resonates on a visceral level. The introduction of new characters, particularly the pivotal role of Tomoe, adds layers of complexity to the narrative, elevating the emotional stakes and providing a nuanced perspective on love, loyalty, and the consequences of one's actions.
Visually, Tsuioku-hen is a work of art. Studio DEEN's animation prowess brings the Meiji era to life with breathtaking detail, capturing the beauty of cherry blossoms, the fluidity of intense sword fights, and the atmospheric nuances of historical Japan. The visual aesthetics not only enhance the storytelling but also contribute to the overall immersive experience, making every frame a feast for the eyes.
The musical score, composed by Taku Iwasaki, is a sublime complement to the narrative. The synergy between music and visuals is a testament to the careful craftsmanship that went into creating Tsuioku-hen.
In just four episodes, Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuioku-hen manages to encapsulate the essence of the entire series, delivering a poignant and unforgettable experience. Its ability to weave together historical drama, romance, and intense action with such finesse is a testament to its status as a masterpiece. For those seeking a profound and emotionally resonant anime, Tsuioku-hen is not just a recommended watch; it is an essential masterpiece that stands as a crowning achievement in the world of animated storytelling.

Full Metal Alchemist, the original anime adaptation of Hiromu Arakawa's masterpiece, stands as an unparalleled testament to the power of storytelling and character development. While Brotherhood may have garnered its share of praise, it is the first adaptation that truly captures the essence and emotional depth of Arakawa's original vision.
Where Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood rushes through the narrative, the original anime takes a more deliberate and measured approach. The pacing allows for a nuanced exploration of the characters' backgrounds, motivations, and relationships, creating a more immersive and emotionally resonant experience. The slow burn of the narrative in the original series allows viewers to savor each
...
moment, fostering a deeper connection with the Elric brothers and their tumultuous journey.
Character development is the true strength of the original series. Ed and Al's growth, struggles, and the moral dilemmas they face are given the time and attention they deserve. The complexities of the supporting cast, from Roy Mustang to Scar, are explored in a way that adds layers to the narrative, making every character feel integral to the overarching story.
The animation style in the original Full Metal Alchemist possesses a unique charm that distinguishes it from Brotherhood. While the latter may boast higher production values, the original's artistry has a timeless quality, capturing the darker, more mature tone of the narrative with a subdued and atmospheric aesthetic.
The soundtrack of the original series, composed by Michiru Oshima, stands out as a masterpiece in its own right. The haunting melodies and evocative score enhance the emotional impact of pivotal scenes, creating a synergy between visuals and music that remains unparalleled.
One of the most significant departures in the original anime lies in its divergence from the manga's later chapters. Rather than being a drawback, this creative decision opens up a unique narrative path, offering an alternative and equally compelling conclusion that resonates with the themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the consequences of playing god.
In conclusion, Full Metal Alchemist, the original anime, is a triumph that surpasses its successor in its patient storytelling, rich character development, and evocative artistic choices. For those who seek an immersive and emotionally charged experience, the journey with the Elric brothers in the original adaptation remains unparalleled, standing as a testament to the enduring brilliance of Hiromu Arakawa's masterpiece.
