The comedy stylings may be different, but both series have down to earth main characters that are unsure of what to make of their lives. They work hard part time to eek out a living and bond with their coworkers. They are both on the serious end of slice of life, presenting many of the minor personal struggles the main characters endure along with the major ones.

Maria†Holic

Self aware and self deprecating humor is relatively common, and both Mariaholic and Pani Poni share this trait. They have a cast of characters that are cliche to an extreme, and their ridiculous, fetishized personalities are constantly lampooned. There is also a certain random and outlandishness that defines these two series' as well. Episodes will often not even complain a discernible subplot, and scenes may shift to ridiculous mascot characters without warning.

Superflat Monogram

Superflat Monogram and Noiseman hide short but cohesive stories behind visuals that seem like the brainchildren of kids on acid; that is, they are both flamboyantly cute yet head-spinningly surreal. The music they employ is chaotic with samplings from nearly every imaginable musical instrument between them, but the masterful way they are integrated with the animation, kicking beats in right when things get exciting, makes these films feel like very polished music videos.

Ocean Waves has a more mild and believable Tsundere lead who ropes in a similarly earnest guy, with the same context of high school melodrama and family problems. While these essential elements are the same, the plot and the characters are aimed at a completely different target audience. It's not a sure bet that Ocean Waves will be to your liking just because you enjoyed Toradora, but it provides an interesting and more realistic look at a tsundere romance that's worth checking out.
