As a fan of the original Macross series, I was very dubious about this sequel. Before watching the anime I read the synopsis and looked at the promotional images, but I would expect the series to be mediocre and uninspired; despite that, I changed my mind about it when I finished the show.
Story [8-]
The story kicks off really slow, and the first episodes were a bit boring. However, the anime becomes much more interesting about half-way through the season. What I really appreciate was how it blends the explicit references to the previous Macross series into the new setting very well, even subverting the expectations
...
of the viewers. There are even some elements from Macross Zero, and even if I didn’t like that show itself, I think that Frontier makes good use of them.
Compared to the original Macross, in Macross Frontier the idol aspect is more important and it gets more screen time, but there’s a very good balance between the idol scenes and the fights with the Vajira, in the same way that Fullmetal Panic blends mecha and rom-com.
Art [7+]
The art style itself is quite good, and the visual aspects of the songs are very well done, but the show lacks the mecha design. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad mecha design, but it doesn’t really stand out in the crowd of the CGI mechas. Overall, the animation is quite good, especially in the OPs and in the last few episodes.
Sound [9]
In an idol(-like) series music has to be good; and in Macross Frontier it surely his.
I don’t usually watch idol anime or listen to their songs, and I seldom enjoy this genre of music, but I must admit that the sweet songs of Ranka and Sheryl really touched my heart. The tracks are very sexy, charming, and sweet at the same time. What’s more, the compositions by Yoko Kanno are, as expected, fantastic.
Characters [7-]
The weakest aspect of the anime. The main problem is the protagonist, Alto, who is boring and very cliché, but even some supporting characters are one-dimensional and boring (for example Mikhail and Sterne). The more interesting and dynamic characters are by far Sheryl and Ranka, and I like their relationship a lot.
Enjoyment [8]
I was bored for the first couple of episodes or so, but the show gets more exciting as it goes on. The last episodes gave me the kind of chills that only an epic mecha series can give.
Overall [8-]
A good mecha anime; it blends very well 80s-like elements with more contemporary ones, and I recommend this series to anyone who loved the original Macross. I suggest watching Zero before Frontier, because, even if it’s not a very good show, it explains many things you need to know in order to appreciate Frontier.

Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid is, in my humble opinion, the best entry of the franchise so far (including Invisible Victory).
Story [8]
Kyoto Animation did a very good job writing the sequels of the first season, namely Fumoffo and The Second Raid, because they split the two souls of the story, the funny high-school/rom-com part, and the serious military/mecha one, in two different seasons. Don’t get me wrong, how the original series blended the two genres together was very interesting, but it will have end up being annoying on a long time. The story itself it’s a classic coming of age story settled during a
...
war against a mysterious group of terrorists, and it’s very well-paced and it achieves to remain very grounded even if it set the stakes really high.
Art [8+]
Although the art style is really good, I think that Kyoto Animation work on Fumoffo was better and more fit for the subject. That said, the animation far exceeds the one of the first season and it stays very constant during the whole season.
Sound [8-]
Compared to the first season, we can see a real improvement here. Even though the soundtrack has the same 80s action show vein to it, the tracks are by far more thrilling and original. The OP is far better than the one of the original season, but my by-far favourite opening is the Fumoffo’s one.
Character [7]
The characters are developed in quite a good way, but I think that their actions are far too predictable. The side characters, especially the antagonists, are very flat and less interesting than the ones of the first season.
Enjoyment [8]
I Definitely enjoyed it, even though I sometimes felt the lack of the school comedy I loved so much in Fumoffo.
Overall [8-]
I strongly recommend you to watch this if you liked the first two seasons because it combines the heavy war plot and action scenes of the original series with the improved animation and sound of Fumoffo.

Full Metal Panic! is an undoubtedly interesting mecha series, but it has many weaknesses.
Story [7+]
The story is divided into two main plot lines: the mecha one and the high school rom-com one. Full Metal Panic! greatest accomplishment is how it blends these two genres together: even if the mecha plot line has more screen time, the rom-com parts are at the same time fun and essential for the development of the main characters.
The plot itself is quite simple, and the obscure mysteries around the mechas’ technology keep the viewer’s interest high.
Art [7]
In the first place, the character design of the main characters is very good;
...
despite this, the animation is not always on point, and even if it’s never really bad, it’s not great either.
Besides that, even if the action scenes’ choreography is not that great, they are exciting due to their high stakes.
Sound [6-]
The weakest part of the show. The OP is okay, but it’s not really special.
The most part of the OST of Full Metal Panic! sounds like a mediocre copy of an 80s action series soundtrack like The A-Team or Hazzard.
Character [7-]
The main characters of Full Metal Panic! are quite good. They’re not super-deep or anything, but they fit very well in their role, especially Testarossa and Kaname.
The side characters are very enjoyable at times (for example, most of the soldiers of the Mithril are really interesting), and very bland at others (the main antagonist is really unbearable and flat).
Enjoyment [8-]
Even if the series itself is not that great as a work of art, I really enjoyed the series as an entertaining mecha show.
It’s not as deep as Neon Genesis Evangelion or Bokurano, or other psychological mechas, but it’s a funny and thrilling way to spend your free time watching giant robots fighting and beautiful waifus being badass.
Overall [7-]
To sum up, I won’t recommend this show to you except if you are a huge mecha fan and can stand early-00’s mediocre animation.
In conclusion, I personally enjoyed this show and I’m really looking to watch other entries of the Full Metal Panic! universe.
