~~ A HellBent Half Arsed Review™ ~~
Overall Rating: 10/10
----- Reason for watching? -----
As a long time fantasy enthusiast and magic lover I couldn't not watch it. Also it jumping to no.1 on MAL so quickly peaked my curiosity
----- Reason for finishing? -----
I don't think I even need a reason, it would've been a disservice to myself to not finish it. Everything about this show is a love letter to the Fantasy genre, and the love and care that went into every moment is palpable
----- Story: 8/10 -----
I'm always hesitant to give a rating on story for something that clearly has yet to finish it's arc,
...
but what I will say is that while simple the premise is extremely captivating and never once lost my interest despite the show being, and I quote from other's I've heard, "side quests: the anime". The pacing was masterful as far as I'm concerned, any show that can keep me glued to the screen as effectively as Frieren did deserves praise
----- Art: 10/10 -----
Quite possibly the most beautiful piece of media I've ever seen. I'm not sure if that's recency bias speaking, but as of now I truly do believe it. I've seen some very pretty shows and very well animated scenes, but Frieren takes it to a whole other level. I was genuinely moved to tears on several occasions just because of how visually stunning it was, and that's not even mentioning the godly battle animation (or even tiny details like the way clothes moved so fluidly)
----- Sound: 9/10 -----
I wouldn't describe the OST as anything less than gorgeous. I've heard the opinion tossed around that it is generic, bland even - I didn't feel that even once. Nostalgic, sure. Reminiscent of classic fantasy tales, absolutely. Something that would be playing in the background as I'd join my friends for a game of DnD, 100%. I don't think it's fair to call it generic when it's clearly intentionally part of the whole aesthetic of the show, but that's just my opinion
----- Character: 10/10 -----
Himmel is my favourite male character of any show I've seen ever, and it's not even close. Frieren is a fantastic protagonist, and watching her journey of self discovery and growth is a wonderful experience and is written masterfully. I could go on and on and on about how much I love every single character, but that would very quickly devolve into heavy spoilers which I prefer to avoid. Point is, the character writing is incredible.
Add on top of that the fact that designs and VA performances are fantastic across the board and it should be pretty clear why it earns a confidant 10/10
----- Enjoyment: 10/10 -----
The first show I've ever seen where there wasn't a single moment that I was bored or uninterested. Peak entertainment, I'm not really sure what else there is to add. It made me laugh, it made me swoon and fall in love with it's characters, it made me cry (like, a lot), it made my jaw drop to the floor on several occasions. I'll say it again - Peak entertainment.
----- Rewatchability: Already done it -----
Not a lot to say really, I enjoyed it on the second watch albeit less than the first but that's expected. Give it another watch future me if you feel like crying or just being cosy with nostalgia
----- Afterthoughts -----
I hesitate to throw around the term masterpiece, since I don't believe in true perfection - this implies that there is not a thing that can be improved which I just don't think is possible to achieve. However, what I will happily say is that this is the closest I've ever felt to witnessing a perfect piece of media. If that's not worthy of a 10/10 I don't know what is

~~ A HellBent Half Arsed Review™ ~~
Overall Rating: 8/10
----- Reason for watching? -----
Magical girl and Yuri are 2 of my favourite things, was curious
----- Reason for finishing? -----
Thought it'd be hot but boring like most ecchi, was shockingly wholesome with an awesome cast of characters
----- Story: 6/10 -----
It's aight. Got a fantastic hook and premise, something I've wanted and even toyed with writing myself for a long time, but beyond that not a ground breaking plot by any means (for the first season at least). I'm definitely interested to see where it goes, whether it simmers as a raunchy slice of life or some off
...
the walls story writing kicks in later on in other seasons (assuming (hopefully) it gets more seasons)
----- Art: 8/10 -----
I really like the style of the show, I can't quite put my finger on what exactly it is but something about it just appeals to me. I really like the character style specifically, just the way the faces are drawn is very appealing
----- Sound: 7/10 -----
Opening is a bop, voice acting is great. Not a lot to say really, it's just good; it does what it needs to do to be more than average but nothing super special
----- Character: 9/10 -----
Characters are awesome, I liked everyone to varying degrees. Utena is 100% the highlight, it's such a delight watching her completely devolve from who she starts as in episode 1 to who she ends up as. Many of the characters at first glance are walking cliches and tropes but they all have quirks that differentiate them from what would've otherwise been flat and generic. Relationships between the characters hard carry the show outside of the ecchi department (honestly I would've enjoyed it just as much if it was not ecchi at all), but as it stands the characters and relationships being strong leant to even saucier and more 'interesting' adult moments
----- Enjoyment: 10/10 -----
Don't look at me like that. I know what this sais about me and I don't care. Either you like ecchi or you don't, I happen to be in the former camp - That's not to say that any and all ecchi would get an easy high ranking though, this show in particular is like expertly refined gourmet ecchi, fermented beautifully with characters I actually like and a situation and setting that is actually fun to indulge in. There are moments where I'm totally not into whatever fetish of the week they happen to be exploring, but luckily since plot is relatively non important it's easy to just skim over those parts and not really miss much so my enjoyment really wasn't hurt by that.
Also, as a somewhat side note, the characters were so loveable that even when nothing was really happening any moment the main cast were on screen I just found myself grinning and having a good time. If that isn't 10/10 enjoyment I don't know what is
----- Rewatchability: alright alright alrightt -----
I mean, it goes without saying that unless something else of this particular combination of genres comes along that happens to strike gold by also giving characters that I really like then I'm probably gonna rewatch it at least a few times to get my fix of wholesome femdom GL magical girl ecchi. It's far to specific and targeted to my tastes for it to not be a must rewatch at least a couple of times
----- Afterthoughts -----
"Ugh, It should've been me, not her. It's not fair!"

~~ A HellBent Half Arsed Review™ ~~
Overall Rating: 9/10
----- Reason for watching? -----
gay girls innit (gigguk recommendation)
----- Reason for finishing? -----
The most invested I've been in any anime in a while. Also gay girls innit
----- Story: 6/10 -----
The story is fine. It's certainly no masterpiece of fiction, but it does what it needs to do and has a few cool twists and turns. I don't really care that it's not immensely complex nor is it realistic in any sense of the word, it's fun when it's fun and it's dramatic when it's dramatic. The plot moves forwards which is more than I can say about
...
quite a few targets I've scratched off of The List™ recently, so it gets points for that too. Really the plot is secondary at best, the characters are what drive the story which either you're into or you're not, it just happens to work for me.
----- Art: 9/10 -----
It's gorgeous. It's not quite drop dead gorgeous like some I've seen, certainly not on par with the best of the best but it beats out a majority of the slop I've been subjecting myself to. I can't even quite explain what it is, there's just moments where the animation of the characters is so full of life and you can tell the animators really put their all into it. Very refreshing to see it keep that consistency from start to finish too, rather than slowly dropping in quality like many shows I've seen.
----- Sound: 7/10 -----
The VA's popped off, this show is fantastically casted and performed. The ost was fine, I don't remember any of it really after finishing which is a shame but there was nothing offensively bad either. The sound design of the gun fights was very satisfieng, I'm not even sure what it was about them - potentially the badass matrix style gun-fu is skewing my memory of that but it is what it is~
----- Character: 10/10 -----
I. Love. The. Characters. Oh my god I love the characters. The main duo is one of my favourite pairings in recent memory, and it's not even close. Chisato is hands down my favourite protagonist in recent memory, possibly ever - she's just so endearing and loveable and goofy but also a determined badass I don't see how I would ever not adore her.
It's not only the main duo either. I can't even remember the last time an entire cast completely clicked with me like this, everyone is a complete banger (besides an obnoxious side character here and there), including the villain who was just charming and a love to hate them kinda person which I'm a big fan of. Obviously in 13 episodes there is a lot to be desired in terms of depth in a large cast, but what we did get very much satisfied me.
----- Enjoyment: 10/10 -----
At first I was watching with a silly grin enjoying the fun and thrill of it all, by the end I was having borderline heart palpitations since I went in completely blind and had no idea where the plot was going. Every action scene was awesome, every quiet moment was goofy, cute or downright touching. I found myself not wanting it to end by the end, but also being satisfied with the way things were loosely tied up. Sometimes a simple ending is all that's needed to give at least some closure (which again, more than I can say for MOST other shows I watch)
----- Rewatchability: 100% -----
Yeah definitely rewatch this one when you have the time future me. I'd be curious if it was as entertaining without the biting stress of not knowing what's gonna happen to the girls or the world around them, but regardless it's some pure dopamine to ingest at a later date
----- Afterthoughts -----
Am I swayed by the implied yuri? Yes, yes I am. Am I sorry for that? No, no I am not. I've also enjoyed plenty of hetero shows, and likewise despised a good chunk of 'yuri' ones, so I stand by my judgement for this one. Is it for everyone? Ehhhh.. Maybe not. However between the cast, the action, the humour, the tenderness, the drama the style everything - it does feel tailor made for me specifically and I'm grateful for it. If it had a more solid finale and/or a more memorable OST, it'd probably land itself a 10/10.

~~ A HellBent Half Arsed Review™ ~~
Overall Rating: 4/10
----- Reason for watching? -----
Heard of the premise, was morbidly curious
----- Reason for finishing? -----
Was amazed by the ridiculous premise, was morbidly curious to see how long it kept the bit going
----- Story: 2/10 -----
...
I can safely say that having only just finished the show I've already forgotten most of the major details. In fact I don't think there is a single plot point that interested me or made sense, which in itself is kinda impressive
----- Art: 5/10 -----
Absolutely nothing to say here, it's art arted, and there was certainly animation. Not really bad in any way, but I wouldn't say it was good either
----- Sound: 5/10 -----
There was not a single memorable moment of sound design or OST, which in itself is disappointing. I'd rather it be awful so I can laugh about it
----- Character: 8/10 -----
In all honesty, I loved a few of the characters enough to keep me going through the whole thing. The MC was hilarious in his cardboardness, and the main girl was honestly very likeable. There was some side characters that were fun and others that made me want to gouge my eyes out with a rusty soup spoon, so good job on that I suppose
----- Enjoyment: 10/10 -----
I was in physical pain and astonishment from the start of episode 1 till the end of episode 12. Fever dream of a show and I kinda loved it, not because I enjoyed the experience but because I knew I'd made it to the end somehow and could move on with my life and be a better person. Still would 100% watch a season 2 though
----- Rewatchability: Never/ maybe once for shits and giggles -----
You'd have to pay me to sit through this again, and even then I'd have to seriously think about it. Or you know, re-watch it future me to see if I'm being too harsh. I dare you.
----- Afterthoughts -----
I realise it is a parody of Isekei, the thing is it was too good at being a parody. There were many times I couldn't tell if something would happen intentionally to mock the genre or if it was just hilariously terrible unintentionally. Extremely well done if it was the former

~~ A HellBent Half Arsed Review™ ~~
Overall Rating: 2/10
Okay, let me preface this review by saying that I have no idea wtf I just watched. It's really, really hard to review what essentially amounts to a 40 minute coked up fever dream but I'll give it my best (and also this is a revision much later so idk how trustworthy past me is, but I'm not rewatching it)
----- Reason for watching? -----
Gigguk innit
----- Reason for finishing? -----
Morbid curiosity.
------- Story: 1/10 -------
What story, har har. Seriously though, jokes aside, I genuinely have no idea what happened. There's a very simple premise that's kinda cool, then
...
people appear and there's very little if any explanation as to who they are, then stuff just kinda happens.
------- Art: 6/10 -------
This might seem high to you, but idk. Something about the art just really appealed to me. The animation itself was weird, very specific moments were obviously animated in meticulous detail and it was completely unnecessary and then other moments that could've benefited from some effort were barely animated. But it has it's own style, and I'm not even sure what it was about it but I liked it for some reason.
------- Sound: 8/10 -------
I always like to try and find good in even the most terrible of things, and I gotta say the sound design really stood out. The ost was a bit all over the place, but when it worked it worked pretty well. I am a little biased 'cause I love horror-ey sad mysterious melodies and the such but still, it was pretty okay. Really though what earns it such a high score is the sound design, got some really squelchy disgusting gore sounds and bone cracking going on which wasn't half bad.
------- Character: 1/10 -------
Take your typical immouto little sister walking cliche, shove her in a 'horror' anime and bam. That's the character of this show. It has none.
------- Enjoyment: 9/10 -------
Don't give me that look. I know it's bad, I know I shouldn't enjoy it but you know what? I really enjoyed the 40 minutes of sitting there with the biggest 'wtf?!' feeling I've had in a long time watching anything, not even just Anime. It's batsh*t insanity, and I kind of love it for a reason I'm not entirely sure about. It genuinely made me laugh out loud in sheer confusion and bewilderment on multiple occasions.
----- Afterthoughts -----
Uh, how do I even sum this experience up. I'm not entirely sure it's possible, other than just that; it was an experience. I have no idea what possessed the studio to limit episodes to only 4 minutes long (including the OP and ED) but dear god it made for one hell of a cluster f*ck of a ride and all I can say is I don't regret watching it, I think. 2/10 dreadful show, 100% would watch a season 2

Went in completely blind, didn't even look at the episode length - 26 seconds in my jaw dropped harder than it has ever before. The only anime where I immediately re-watched the first episode after finishing it.
one of the two listed staff members is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the other is Erik Satie, both of whom are long dead. 10/10 for resurrecting classical composers just for this 7~ minute shit post
I've said everything there is to say, MAL won't let me upload a review that short so here's a haiku about the show:
I stayed up all night,
Searching for a masterpiece -
And this isn't it.
10/10

~~ A HellBent Half Arsed Review™ ~~
Overall Rating: 9/10
----- Reason for watching? -----
Saw it in a Gigguk video, peaked my curiosity
----- Reason for finishing? -----
Looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, is beautiful. Loved the main characters.
----- Story: 8/10 -----
...
Solid. Felt a bit shakey at times, randomly seesawed between heavy character drama and goofball slice of life, but I didn't mind that too much. Suprisingly cute(?) for a story heavily terrorism themed
----- Art: 9/10 -----
Looks beautiful, has great action sequences & designs. Whether it was cute moments or epic scary parts or just scenery, all looked great.
----- Sound: 9/10 -----
Ost had me mesmorised. I'll probably be listening to the sound track in my spare time for sure
----- Character: 8/10 -----
Loved the main cast. When a show has me second guessing who I should route for because I love everyone, it did something great in my opinion. It would be a 9, but there was one bitch I couldn't stand who genuinely made my blood boil. Ended up liking her too, but still annoyed the hell out of me. Other than that character and maybe one other, I don't think there was a significant character that I didn't like.
----- Enjoyment: 10/10 -----
Episode 1 had my curiosity, by episode 2 it had my attention. By the end I was in tears over terrorists. Something clearly went right
----- Rewatchability: At least once -----
Yeah, rewatch this one future me. I rekon you'll get more enjoyment out of it the second time around, since you won't be stressed out of your god damn mind and can appriciate the quieter moments more.
----- Afterthoughts -----
Not much else to say, just a great show. Found out after watching it's Mappa, which of course it is no wonder it was great.
