Higashi no Eden(Eden of the East) it a magnificent foray into a world of enigmatic intrigue the likes of which I can't remember seeing since Serial Experiments Lain. The opening sequence itself opens the way for questions and the thirst for information right off the bat, reminding me of the opening from Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Throughout the series you are basically confronted with confusing information left and right, leaving you to glean what you can from what is given. Afterwards you are left pondering this information as you watch, actively trying to decipher it for yourself. Though there is a need for a

bit of practical sleuthism on your part. If you don't read the entries in the cellular phones, you will still be stuck scratching your head after the "end".
Even with this, you are never left bored. There is always more information forthcoming, or just a simple curveball that leaves you wondering.
As expected with Production I.G. at the helm, the visuals are beautiful. The imagery alone makes this series worth picking up. And Kenji Kawaii(Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, Death Note, Fate/stay night, GitS, etc) has once again put together a great score that flows perfectly with the series.
All in all I would rate this series very highly, especially when compared to the rather low quality of this season. A definate gem, and a must-see for anyone who doesn't require non-stop action(simply for the sake of having it), or gratuitous fanservice. If you enjoyed the mysterious segment of series such as Lain, Evangelion, .hack//Sign, etc this is a must see.
