When you look at the cover Oda Nobuna no Yabou, you would immediately think "oh, its just another cliche harem series", I wouldn't blame you if you did as it does look like one and I myself thought of it as one, but when you actually watch it you realize that there is simply more to it than that, its definitely not a tasteless cliche and although it has many female characters, it doesn't present itself as a stereotypical harem where they are all attracted to the male lead.
I won't bother with the introductions because I know you are smart enough to have read the
...
synopsis first, so I won't repeat anything you already know. Instead I will get straight onto the review.
Story: 8.5/10
The thing that most other cliche harem/romance animes out there fail at is the story, they continuously throw in unneeded fanservice and ecchi scenes to please the viewers instead of telling the story. However, unlike them ONnY cuts the ecchi short and focuses more on giving the viewers a good story and plot, which is commendable. However although i say this, they put in all the fanservice in the ending credits lolz XD but its much better than putting it in the episode itself where it will ruin the storytelling and the serious aspect of the anime
So far the storytelling has been superb and the plot has been interesting, its based on real historical events that happen in the Sengoku Era where Oda Nobuna (female version), the leader of the Oda Clan has an ambition of conquering the whole of Japan, but in order to do so she must take on rival clans and handle internal affairs, the one who helps her on her conquest is Sagara Yoshiharu who is a huge fan of the original Nobunaga Oda, he uses his knowledge from the game he played "Nobunaga's Ambition" to assist her by telling her what she needs to do and how she must do it. It gets more interesting as the story goes on where you learn more about Nobuna, alliances are made and as other characters are introduced.
The only plot hole that I've encountered so far is how Sagara was able to time travel back in time and how all the major samarai's turned into girls. However its an anime, so there's no point nitpicking on these small points when its purely fiction and doesn't really need to be explained.
Art: 8.5/10
There isn't much to say about this, the characters are nicely drawn and the vibrant colours and costumes suit the characters really well, its based on clothes of the Sengoku period but its been altered and changed slightly to suit the characters wearing them, which is a good point about this anime because it gives off a unique feeling to them. The action scenes and fighting aren't too shabby either and are nicely animated.
Sound: 8/10
The opening theme is fine and suits the anime, the voice acting is also done pretty well, the characters that have a mature voice aren't too husky and the characters that have a sweet and childish voice aren't too high pitched and loli-like. The voice acting in serious situations are done well and doesn't feel forced and the same can be said for the comical situations where there is a bit of comedy.
Characters: 8.5/10
Yes the characters are a bit clichéd but they don't act as if they are in a cliché harem anime, instead of the girls falling for the male lead like they should, they have no respect for him and call him a monkey ("saru") which is taken from his name *S*agara Yoshih*aru*.
The main Heroine Nobuna is a tsundere character but isn't an annoying kind of tsundere, more of a cute and pleasant tsundere unlike all the usual clichéd bitchy tsunderes. She can also handle herself just fine, she isn't a weak character who relies heavily on the male lead, although Yoshiharu is from the future and knows exactly what Nobuna should do, she makes it pretty clear to him that she doesn't want to be told what to do and can make her own decisions. As time goes by you also start to learn more about her character and more about her ambitions.
However what surprised me the most was the main male lead Sagara Yoshiharu, his character is pretty unique, he is a weakling but he isn't weak-willed, even though he acts like a bit of an idiot he helps out using his knowledge and takes command in battle. Although he is a pervert, he isn't overly horny that it ruins his character. He is a sort of pleasant and funny male lead that you can't help but like.
There really isn't much of a harem aspect in the anime where the female characters fall for Yoshiharu one by one, the only romance that is hinted is between him and Nobuna, unlike the usual overly tsundere female and normal male relationship that occurs frequently in anime, this is one of those rare cases where they are both tsunderes, the best example that i could give you that is similar to this is okabe's and kurisu's (steins gate) love-hate relationship. They both ridicule each other and argue but they actually care for one another but they refuse to admit it.
Enjoyment: 9/10
Its very entertaining to watch, the story isn't boring and actually teaches you about Japanese history, Yoshiharu is hilarious and its interesting to see him in action, its also quite funny when he and Nobuna argue, the comedy doesn't ruin the seriousness of the anime and it does well in changing between the comical moments and serious moments.
Overall: 9/10
I haven't finished the anime but the episodes I have watched have been great and its been getting better and better as the episodes go on. So don't be discouraged to watch this anime just because it looks like another stereotypical anime because this is a good example of how "you shouldn't judge a book by its cover".

Minamoto-kun Monogatari is basically a modern day manga version of the old classic novel Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji) which was written in the early years of the 11th century (the Heian period). I don't know the full details but Genji Monogatari is basically about a man named Hikaru Genji and his love life, he is man who had good-looks and was a playboy who apparently had 14 lovers in his life.
Your probably wondering why im telling you this. Well these facts play a huge part in this manga's storyline and will help you to understand it.
Story 9/10
The story focuses on Minamoto
...
Terumi (18) a guy with a pretty face who is often mistaken as a girl, due to this he was often bullied in middle school by girls and now suffers from Gynophobia (fear of girls) and can't seem to drink milk because of the trauma he received when the girls pouring sour milk all over him. He is forced to leave his home and live with his aunt-Fujiwara Kaoruko (fathers younger sister) in his 1st year of college, little does he know that she is actually doing research on Genji Monogatari and that she plans to use him as test subject to find out what went through Genji's head when he conquered his 14 women. To find this out she plans to have Terumi conquer 14 different women and have sex with them. To do this, she slowly educates him on how to handle women and get used to a women's body which helps with his Gynophobia, she will then introduce him to a girl he must conquer and will be his guide on how to do it.
Art 8/10
The characters are drawn pretty well and they are very pretty, one problem that this manga faces is that it only has around 10 pages in each chapter, but the reason being is most likely because its a weekly manga, instead of giving a big release every month, it would give out small chapters every week or so, which in my opinion is better as there are faster releases and people who cant wait will have something to read every now and then the people who dont mind waiting and like longer releases can wait a few weeks and read a bunch chapters (pages) all at once like they would in a monthly manga.
Characters 9/10
The main characters are pretty interesting and are likable, the main protagonist (Minamoto Terumi) for example isn't the total pussy i thought he would be and is actually a strong character who at the start of the Manga was already working to get rid of his Gynophobia and his distaste for milk. At the start he already wanted to "bang every chick he comes across", well what he meant wasn't really to have sex with every girl he meets but to be more confident with girls and get a girlfriend, this is what i like about him, he knows his weakness but instead of wallowing in self pity and depression, he is already trying to become better and cure himself. I dont think ive come across a character like him and he is interesting to watch.
Another example would be Fujiwara Kaoroku, she is Terumi's aunt, she is very beautiful and is admired by many for her looks and her intelligence, it is said that she dislikes men and hasn't had a boyfriend because of it, yet she doesn't mind sexually teasing Terumi and letting him touch her. She acts as Terumi's mentor on how to handle girls and helps him with his Gynophobia, she saw Terumi's pretty face and thought he had the potential to become a playboy like Genji and help her with her research, she saw that he was already reading books on "how get girls to fall in love with you" and tells him that she can educate him a lot better than a book, she is very smart/sharp and can tell what other people are thinking or feeling, often using her knowledge to sexually tease Harumi and uses his hornyness and pent up desires against him but she does it not because she loves him but does it so that he can learn more about the female body and how to handle it so that he can get used to it and use what he has learned to conquer the girls she targets.
Enjoyment 9/10
When i came across this manga it was months ago, around the time when it first came out, at that time it was ranked just over a hundred in manga reading sites, i read the description on it and thought it would be one of those crappy ecchi mangas with the main character being a total pussy and yet suddenly gaining the affections of the girls around him and it turning into a typical harem i didn't think it would last long until it drops in the rankings...............................Oh how wrong i was, i found it again months later with it being in the top 30 which is amazing progress in my opinion, i ended up checking it out and i was addicted after 5 chapters, although the chapters are short, it doesn't have any sort of wasted pages and doesn't beat around the bush and gets straight to the point, which i like, it does an excellent job at keeping the story interesting and leaves you wanting more and more.
Drawbacks
As i mentioned before the chapters are small but it comes out every week or so, i don't say every week because the generous fans who translate this manga take time having to buy it and translate it, which can take a few a days so the releases aren't really consistent and on average takes a week for a new chapter to come out, but hopefully the translations will pick up and as the series gets more popular there will probably be more pages per chapter as it is already getting more and more colour pages but i warn you now it may be irritating having to wait for releases and reading small chapters when they come.
Overall 9/10
even with its small releases it still has a great plot and story with interesting characters to boot, i would recommend it to harem lovers and people who would enjoy mangas like To-Love-Ru Darkness and The world God Only Knows as they are similar in many ways, this manga is also still at the early stages and it hasn't even been a year since it was released so it is quite new to people and not many people have read it so dont let the current rank (2002) disturb you when not many people have read it, i predict in a few months time the rank will undoubtedly increase, if it doesn't i will eat my shoes.
i would also like to warn you that this is a mature manga and is more seinen than shounen, although they have not appeared yet there will without a doubt be sex scenes, i wont spoil the details but it is one those rare mangas that wont progress unless it has them, so sooner or later this manga will be put in the smut category on manga reader sites, it is really recommended for people 18+ but what do i know, im 15, so if you are watching be prepared for adult content.
Thank You for reading my long, boring review. I would appreciate feedback :)

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be inside a game? people everywhere have always wanted to be inside a game or at least considered what it would be like to live in one. In this day and age there are games like MMORPG (massive multiplayer online role playing games) where people can customise their very own characters and travel the online fairytale worlds where they can participate in adventures, quests, they can conquer dungeons, fight monsters, meet new people, just about anything but you can't actually experience this firsthand because it is limited to the fact that you cant actually live
...
inside the game, only watch it through a screen.
However this story is set in 2022 where technology has advanced to the point where virtual reality is possible, where people can travel into a created world and experience things just like in reality. Nerve Gear helmet, helmets that connect your brain and receives your 5 senses and relays them to an online world, are used by gamers in this age however not many games have been released yet until a genius by the the name of Kayaba Akihiko, the man responsible for the invention of nerve gear, creates a new generation MMORPG by the name of Sword Art Online (SAO) which revolutionised the MMORPG genre, and created a completely different genre for games called VRMMORPG (virtual reality massive multiplayer online role playing games) in these games the dream of living inside a game became a reality, but that reality was more than they had bargained for.
The story follows Kirigaya Kazuto, an anti-social game addict who jumps at the idea of the brand new game, when the game was released he bought the game and immediately logged in to this new virtual world, creating the online ID Kirito (*Kiri*gaya, Kazu*to*) , there he sees a brand new world in front of him, in this game the main objective was for players to cooperate with each other and clear the levels of aincrad by defeating the boss at each level, sight, sound, touch, smell, taste, they all applied in this world everything was realistic, there he meets a newbie to the game by the name of cline who he-despite having trouble getting along with others- befriends and teaches him the basics of the game, everything was fine until cline realised he couldn't log out, at first they thought it was a bug but suddenly they were both teleported to the town centre where suddenly everyone had declared they had the same problem, suddenly a figure appears in the sky (Kayaba) declaring that they could not log out until they had cleared all 100 levels of the game castle Aincrad, and that if they perished in the game they wont be able to restart as microwaves would fry their brains instantly in the real world and kill them if they were killed in the game or if someone interfered with the helmet in the real world, Kayaba had also declared this in the real world to prevent people from pulling the plug on the players...suddenly the virtual reality became a reality, as 10,000 people found themselves trapped, and as the appearance of the characters the users had created in the game suddenly changed to their actual appearance in the real world, people denied this reality and thought that help would come but none came, some tried to escape by committing suicide but whether or not it succeeded was unknown which not many players risked, this story follows Kirito on a journey to clear the levels of Aincrad and to save the online world where the harsh realities of the real world are depicted in this virtual world.
Would you like to live in a virtual reality? where you could live as a hero? where you could do anything you ever wanted that you couldn't in reality? even when death is also a reality?
the story for me is 10/10, anyone a fan of MMORPG can enjoy this, it starts off somewhat light hearted but it becomes a lot more serious as the story goes on with people trying to clear the levels, forming guilds, a police and forming an actual society in the game but this society doesn't just come with good guys who want to clear the game, in a struggle to survive and gather resources thieves emerge which leads to muggings, which leads to PKing (player killing) and with the cruel fact of dying in this world is real, many go crazy
the art...well this is a light novel so there aren't many pictures however the artwork is still very good and nicely drawn 9/10
characters 10/10 i can relate a lot to the main character Kirito's personality so i may be a little bias on this, the characters are brilliant as they all have their own goals and unique personalities, they all have their own opinions and points of view and each have their own unique past and lead different lives in the SAO game, Kirito leading one of the the most tragic lives......
enjoyment/overall 10/10, when i began reading, i couldn't stop (im on volume 6 now) , this is my first light novel and im glad it was my first as it has been very interesting and has a very unique story, i recommend it to those who like MMORPG's and people who want an adventure story with action with a slight bit of romance
first review so sorry if i made slight errors :P
