Komi Can't Communicate is not a slice-of-life, it's the whole cake.
Komi Can't Communicate is a story that needs no explanation, anyone who's ever been into manga has at least heard of this story once, and because a synopsis is already written for you on the animes actual home page, go read that if you just want to know the jist. I'm an anime only, I have not read the 300 Chapters of the Komi-san manga, so everything I judge shall be based on only the anime, that being said, Komi Can't Communicate is one of- if not, the best Slice-of-life anime I have ever seen,
...
here's why:
Story: 8/10
Komi-sans goal is made very clear in the first episode, Komi wants to make a hundred friends before she graduates, but she has a communication disorder! but Tadano, our psuedo Main Character sees this, and befriends her. Every episode goes forward in a similar fashion, new episode, new friend, new friend, new event/situation that occurs, new episode, etc, etc.
The formula, although to a degree is a littlevbasic, is the foundation of what makes a Slice-of-life anime a... Slice-of-life anime. Komi-san follows that, but also strays away from it. There IS an end goal (100 Friends) and although it is made obvious at the beginning, who's really going to count each individual friend?
It is both an anime that progresses it's narrative, and remains stagnant all throughout, slowly she is making those 100 friends and you won't even know where the halfway point of the story is, and commentary on the structuring aside, I just really like the story in general. It's protagonists situation is comparable to most (Wants to do X but is held back by Y) but is also unique in a way (Difficulty to speak, wishes to make friends) that just... goes really well with me.
Art: 9/10
This anime had no reason to look as good as it does. It has your typical school setting, with characters and uniforms, but also has these beautiful shots of the sky, or of a flower, or of the school on a sunset and all that, all the while having Fight Scenes that show lightning, the sweaty faces of two competitors, the clashing of feet to the ground and dynamic expressions that are on par with some of the most eye exploding animation feats to date.
It has it all on the art department, a unique style of it's own, well timed comedic movements, just the right amount of 3D (for the tables and few areas of the background) and beautiful landscapes.
Sound: 8/10
I don't have much to say about it's sound effects, they seem alright to me, but for the music... it really works. Komi-sans OST consists of, mostly piano. It represents elegance and class, whilst going against exactly that with the actual anime being a Rom-Com/SoL, with wacky hijinks and kids just being kids. The OP however represents the anime perfectly, it's the perfect amount of wholesome energy that just introduces you to the cast so subtly, but so well, and doesn't feel like it's trying too hard to be a happy song.
Character: 9/10
Everyone has a role in the anime, and everyone plays the role perfectly. We have a Yandere, a Chuunibyou, a Childhood Friend, a MILF, a Dom, a Regular Guy, a Massive Introvert, EVERYONE. This anime has every archetype you could ever imagine, and they all play their roles really really well. Some characters are a bit unlikeable, but most of the time aren't even there to BE liked at all, it's like the story WANTS me to dislike them, and when I put it in that lense, that character doesn't seem all that bad. There's a difference between a "bad" character, and a "bad written" character, you can like a bad character, IF they're written well, Komi-san has some of those kind of characters, but everyone else, is a joy to see. Great Characters all around.
Enjoyment: 9/10
Who CAN'T enjoy this anime? It's funny, good looking, interesting even on it's romantic side, and is Short and Sweet, seriously, you'd have to be a rock to not find some form of joy watching this show, but nonetheless, not everyone has the same sense of humor or taste, so speaking entirely subjectively, I enjoyed this anime way more than most shows. It's charming, it has that vibe to it that most anime don't have, despite having almost 10 similarities to 10 other anime I can think of on the back of my head.
Overall: 9/10
Komi-san is many things, It's a Comedy, it's a Romance, it's a Slice of Life, it's a Shoujo, it's a Shounen (If you think Tadano is more important than Komi) it might as well be an Isekai for all we know! (it's not) Komi Can't Communicate is the jack of all trades, if you want to see everything that anime can offer, and not just one genre, Komi Can't Communicate is an anime for you my friend, like my title said, Komi is not so simple to be described as a mere "Slice", but it is the entire cake itself, you will not regret the day you take that bite.
With that, I wish you a good day, and hopefully you found my review helpful, I might review anime more often but I just haven't found the time to both review and watch new anime, all the while balancing normal life activities, so I dunno, anyway, take care!

Having never done a review on anything ever, this'll be a new experience for me.
I chose to review Tokyo Revengers because it has both a ton of aspects that I like about anime, and a few aspects that I dislike about anime. A pretty solid middle ground to start reviewing things I should say. Note that I am not the best and this is a first for me, so if some things I say seem a bit odd and aren't related to the anime at all then my apologies, let's just get on with the review. Tokyo Revengers! Yeah! I like it a lot. Story: 8/10 TRs ... |
