*NO SPOILERS REVIEW*
I'll keep this review short and sweet. Promare is a movie with flashy animation, cool colors, jamming music, high paced story, and lively characters. I'll break down my ratings for each component of the movie here, if you want to see a quick one sentence summary of my thoughts on the movie, feel free to skip to the end of this review and read what I've written in my enjoyment section.
Story: 5
Overall, the story didn't stand out that much to me. It was very predictable, and a lot of times the pacing seemed to be completely out of wack. In the movie,
...
events happen one after another with practically zero break in between or explanation of what was going on. The director of the movie seems to just hope that he can string together a bunch of things happening, put it on 2x speed, and hope the viewer will have a good time. For a lot of people, I could see this being the case. Personally, I enjoy more developed stories without erratic plot pacing which is why I have to give Promare's story a 5.
Art: 9
Not much to say here, Trigger does an absolutely amazing job with the art and the animation throughout the entire movie is extremely vibrant and packed full of energy. Very solid 9 at the least. Not a 10 for me personally but, I believe that the art and animation in Promare deserve no less than a 9.
Sound: 9
The music in promare. The sound effects in promare. Both of these combined make for a fantastic movie experience. Promare really knows when to play sick music at the right times, whether it's right before an intense battle, or a shocking revelation of events. They know when to run their music. The sound effects throughout the entire movie are also spectacular. The sound definitely deserves nothing short of at least an 8 and is highly praiseworthy (along with the animation!).
Character: 5
Okay, along with the story, this is where the movie falls apart for me. I found the characters in Promare to be extremely generic. And I mean, extremely, extremely generic. The main character, Galo, is at the absolute peak of stereotypical shounen MCs. He's stupid, gungho, and pretty much doesn't change his ideals throughout the entirety of the movie. The villain of the movie (who I won't name here) also falls into a very stereotypical shounen villain archetype. Other than the mc and main antagonist, the other characters aren't too special either and you can find them in just about any average joe shounen.
Enjoyment: 8
Although I didn't enjoy the story or characters much in promare, I think it still fairly enjoyed watching the movie. I think the end message is that not all stories or characters have to be extremely unique or well thought out, and promare does an excellent job of still making an entertaining movie despite its flaws.
Overall: 7
Overall, Promare was a 7 for me. If you want to know my thoughts of the movie summed up, just read what I've written in my enjoyment section.
