"Medalist" is like beggar’s chicken.
from outside, it looks like nothing more than a lump of clay, unremarkable and unassuming. But once you crack it open, you’re hit with a rich aroma of spices, and when you take a bite, the tenderness dances on your tongue. That’s exactly what watching this series feels like. At first, I thought it was just another CGDCT anime filled with adorable girls, but it turned out to be so much more.
Well, let’s dive deeper into it!
Alright, let’s talk about the wings— I mean, the animation. Over the years, this studio has had a bit of an animation problem.
...
The first few episodes usually look great, but by the middle to the end, it turns into an outsourcing nightmare, resulting in some... less-than-appetizing visuals.
But with Medalist, the fact that this was produced by ENGI wasn’t an issue at all (still a lot of outsourcing tho), But, They managed to season the wings just right, making it's tenderne— ahem, I mean, they kept the animation consistently solid, even until recent episode. Sure, there are still some drawbacks, like use of CG, which isn’t everyone’s favorite. However, the CG here is polished enough to blend in with the 2D animation. On top of that, the camera work during the skating scenes adds an extra layer of intensity, making the whole experience even more engaging.
Enough with production stuff, let's talk about The Drumstick(Story) .
The story of this anime revolves around a young girl named Inori, who dreams of becoming a medalist in the world of figure skating. One day, she crosses paths with a man named Tsukasa, who once started skating too late to go pro. And just like that, their journey as coach and student begins.
Sounds simple, right? But what makes this series truly special is its characters.
let’s move on to the thighs(Characters) This part is rich in fat, making it juicy and tender when cooked just right. And just like that, Medalist delivers characters that are full of depth and emotion.
The character writing here focuses on the relationship between coaches and students. Their interactions are fun to watch, with plenty of comedic moments that I found adorable and funny. Medalist also carries strong themes of parenting. The anime highlights how every word a parent says can deeply impact their child. It teaches the importance of guiding children in a way that helps them believe in their own potential, rather than limiting them with doubt.
And then, at one point, the show decides to punch you in the gut with an emotional scene so powerful, it could make grown-up man with beard in tears. Seriously, every dialogue is so well-written that it feels like you’re stepping into their world, experiencing every triumph and struggle alongside them. And it’s not just limited to the coaches and students, characters like the mother and people around the protagonist also get their moments to shine.
And finally, we have the breast(music) . This is the most flavorful part, capable of setting the mood depending on the skill of the chef. And let me tell you, the music in this anime Is like a kiss from a five-star chef who knows exactly how to cook chicken!.
One of these master chefs is none other than the GOAT, Kenshi Yonezu, who crafted Medalist’s opening theme. This song is bursting with passion. you can feel every ounce of emotion in every second of it. And the soundtrack? Just as phenomenal. The melodies pull you right into the characters' emotions, making you experience their highs and lows as if they were your own.
All in all, Medalist is an emotionally charged and uplifting anime, packed with valuable lessons to take away. Objectively, I’d rate it a 9/10—but subjectively? A solid 10/10.
So what are you waiting for? Go watch Medalist, This chicken slaps!
