Both tell wholesome stories of lacking acceptance, admitting mistakes, forgiveness, grief and loss. They have similar vibes and were produced by Magic Bus, the same studio that made Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu.

Both deliver refreshing countryside vibes but also depict the hardship of living there. Even though the protagonists had different reasons to leave the city, both chose to do so because they felt it wasn't the right environment for them.

Both revolve around broomstick-flying girls with charming manners and enchanting appearances. I'm glad that a lot of former Ghibli members united in Studio Ponoc to carry on the exceptional look of their animations and universally appealing screenplays, we can't thank them enough.

Shelter (Music)

Both are amongst the top 3 most popular professional standalone AMVs (which is a rare kind since most AMVs are either part of a series or fan-made assemblies of arbitrary anime scenes and music), the remaining one is Interstella5555, the longest music album video ever. The videos both have a sci-fi setting, On Your Mark has a retro touch whereas Shelter is more futuristic, however the songs and stories are fundamentally different. Also worth mentioning is that On Your Mark's screenplay was directed by no less than Hayao Miyazaki.

Both movies center on finding a computer hacker and deal with the concept of synthetically enhancing/separating the human mind from its body as well as AI developing consciousness and existential questions concerning these matters. Ghost in the Shell focuses on creating a mind-blowing cerebral ambiance and is targeted at a relatively broad, grown-up audience whereas Expelled from Paradise is more of a youth-orientated CG mechanime with an overly saucy, tsundere protagonist but nonetheless a good enough storyline and quite meaningful dialogue at times.

Steamboy
add

Both are movies of the Punk genre, Akira is Cyberpunk and Steamboy is Steampunk. They also share a large amount of their staff including Katsuhiro Otomo as director and original creator. Mentionable is Steamboy's production cost of over $20 million making it one of the most expensive Japanese animation movies to date which is reflected in its top-notch quality at the time of release.
