I had no expectations when I watched this, but holy moly did it blow my mind, so much so that I just had to write a review. I've been watching anime for over 15 years, and it truly was a nice surprise to find such a hidden gem between the mountains of mediocrity these days. Anyways, let me explain to you why this anime kicks so much ass.
The story takes place in a world with humanoid-like animals, where the MC is a cynical walrus and taxi driver. Throughout the series he meets all sorts of characters who all have their own problems. Like for example
...
a character who tries to become famous on social media, another who is looking for a wife etc. While the individual stories and characters aren't extremely fleshed out, they are very relatable and revolve around the same core topic: seeking validation and a feeling of accomplishment. What truly elevates this anime to another level is the fact that most of these individual stories come more and more together as the series goes on.
The presentation and tone of the series are also great. Instead of the usual forced cringy humor that is pervasive in (modern) anime, this show was actually funny. At the same time, the series also has a more darker introspective tone, which is something I appreciate since I'm in my 30s.
Another thing that is great about this anime is the feeling of mystery. To address the elephant in the room (no pun intended), why are all the characters animals? Did they use to be humans in the past? Also why is the MC so cynical and pessimistic? Then there are several other things as well, but it just adds to the mystery and makes me want to find out what's going to happen next.
I can go on and on, but now let's talk about the more controversial aspects of the series. One thing that stands out in a good and bad way is the voice acting. Some characters speak more "natural" Japanese while others talk with a more typical "anime-like" voice, which causes a bit of a clash. While I personally liked the art style as it fits the series well, it definitely is a bit simplistic at times, and the car scenes were not that great. Some characters and story lines were also more interesting than others.
Still, even with these minor flaws, this anime truly is a hidden gem. If you like more mature introspective stuff, then this is definitely for you. If on the other hand, you like more (battle) shounen oriented stuff with more flashiness or ecchi/fanservice, then you best avoid it I guess.
