These two series have a lot in common. Since they're both made by the same company, GAINAX, then you can expect them to be a lot alike. Both animes focus on growing up and becoming a man but they don't show it in a boring way. These animes will get you pumped and energized just from the first episode. The energy level in one anime is pretty much equal to the other. Other things these anime have in common are: they both focus on first love, estranged parent-child relationships, being yourself, mecha and how to be cool. If you liked one, you'll like the other. And if you're quoting characters from one show, you'll be doing the same or the other.
