Ah there are so many criticizing reviews about this anime. However, just think.. why are people so quick and passionate to hate on something just because they classify it as "cliche" or has apparently "bad writing"?
The truth is, that this anime was generally very enjoyable.
It draws you in with unexpected plot twists along the way, allowing you to sympathize with the main character and root for him to become stronger. The characters are well thought out and presented in a way that you would love the characters you love, and hate the ones you hate.

Higurashi was an anime that really took me by suprise. What seemed to be a moe moe slice of life anime took a mysterious dark turn.
The anime keeps you on your toes, wondering what is actually going on and why the world constantly restarts. It gets you really thinking and wondering whats going on behind the scenes. The 2nd season (Higurashi no naku koro ni Kai) explains and resolves the whole mystery and ties the story all together perfectly. Lots of people don't give this a chance cus it gives a slow start however, it builds its story line/base whilst giving the audience its information ...

Since there's only one other review, i thought id write one for this. I watched through this series throughout my childhood and therefore, it holds a very special place.
It is not just informative, but also teaches you the many lessons in life. It teaches you the importance of friendship and from wrong and right. The main character solves many things with his intellect whilst also facing many hardships. The anime is sometimes sad but that does also just highlights the mostly good moments throughout this show.
