Watching this in 2021 truly is a treat. To preface this review I watched literally every other fate before watching this one and gotta say this is my favourite. I scored this show based on it's own merit.

Obviously it aged a bit, but it was only bad for 1 minute (a certain dragon sequence) during the entire show, the rest of the time the animation was really passable. For a 2006 anime the production quality is outstanding.

The sound was good, nothing special but it did a really good job setting the tone so no complaints there. I do have to give a small shout out ... to the openings here, the first feels really mysterious and the second is more anime like with a touch of fate both really set the tone for the show in a really good way, it has been a while since I saw such appropiate openings for a show.

The characters and story is where this show shines, it isn't always very logical and sometimes you feel things are left out but the themes are good, the world is intertwined really well with the characters which makes the show better with every episode. All the characters grew on me during the show even the villains.

I can't really put my finger on it but ever seen a show and feel the characters and world don't connect very well which takes you out of the story? With fate you get the opposite, the more we explore and see the characters, their personality, their backstory, the world, the more the story pulls you in and near the end you can't help but want more, this is what made this show a 9 for me, for it's flaws it is such a great introduction to nasu's world. The ending is very good and leaves you satisfied but the show drops so many hints towards other stories during it's run that it makes you wanna see the rest of the stories left untold (thanks multiple routes).

If you want to get into fate and see this review, honestly start where you want, for me this is the last main fate I watched and it doesn't really matter where you start but if you want to know if fate is for you and you can get over the fact that this show aged a bit this is one of the best anime's around and a great starting point for fate, or if you don't want more this on it's own it is an outstanding anime and it will leave you with a great viewer experience.
