If you have watched a lot of slice of life/drama series, you probably realized by now that most of them shared the same predictable plot, characters tropes, etc... Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is no different.
But why should it be? And does it have to be "different" to be a memorable series? There have been shows like this in the past and there surely will be as well in the future, but nothing can replace Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso in my heart and that is why my rating for this series is 10/10.
Now here are my reasons/breakdown
Story: 7/10
The story follows the lives
...
of a few teenagers in middle school and the challenges they have to overcome in a span of a year.
There are a lot and I mean A LOT of foreshadowing when it comes to plot points. If you are attentive to the scenes, you WILL know how the story is going to unfold. A lot of people dislike this, not just pertaining to Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, but to anime in general. I would have to agree if if this show a mystery or thriller, however since it's a slice of life, I could care less. Let's face it, peoples' lives for the most part are plain and predictable so why would I expect a series about people's lives to be filled with twists and turns? That said, the story is definitely more exciting than most peoples' IRL, but for anime standards it's rather common, which is why I rate the story 7/10.
Art & Sound: 9/10
I lumped these together because they are the main reasons why I picked up the series. From the vibrant colors to soothing music, one can't help to be filled with a rush of joy and happiness. I also came to love classical music after watching this, so much so, I have numerous arrangements on my phone which I listen to on a daily basis.
Although I loved everything from the character design to the aspiring soundtrack throughout the series, the art and music during the comic relief segments were not up to par to those that I was spoiled with during the rest of series, which is why I had to lower rating for the art and sound to a 9/10 respectively.
Characters: 8/10
Stereotypical or not, I grown attached to the two main characters Kousei and Kaori. I even developed further respect and love for Kaori due to the heavy foreshadowing in her story. It is evident that these two have matured over the series and were perfect foils for each other. However, they weren't the only characters in the show.
I'm not going to as far to say the support cast weren't developed at all, in fact, I thought I got familiar with most of them. However, I felt that certain characters had no reason to be introduced other than to further the plot, which was not to my liking and is the reason my overall character rating is a 8/10.
Enjoyment/Overall : 10/10
Now, you might be asking two questions
#1 Why did you mash up enjoyment and overall
#2 Why is your rating a 10/10 when no other category was rated a 10
To the first question, at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is how much I enjoyed doing something, in this case watching Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso, which I feel naturally goes hand in hand with the term "overall".
As for the second question, I asked myself
"Did Shigatsu wwa Kimi no Uso have flaws? If so, did they ruin what you loved about the series?"
The answers was "yes, hell NO!".
There is no other reason why my heart yearns to rewatch this series over and over other then to express my love for the show. Witnessing a piece of art is something special, but having it impact your life is something extraordinary.
It is exactly that which brought this show over the edge for me. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso has touch my heart and influenced me as a person in countless ways. I couldn't have been happier that I picked up this series and I forever grateful to have experienced this journey with Kousei, Kaori and co. which is why I'm honored to rate this series an astounding 10/10
