Both have mind blowing themes related to human evolution and psychics. Both deal with themes involving the potential end of the world; end-time apocalypse. Both take place in a futuristic version of Tokyo city. Both are mature and intended for adult audiences specifically. Both are animated in a similar dense detailed drawing artwork style, although Akira was entirely hand-drawn. One is my favorite animated film, the other is my favorite animated series.
