Friendship through the power of board games - a board-gamified review of Houkago Saikoro Club
(this review is structured and meant to be read as if it was a board game manual)
-- General game info --
> game idea and concept by Xiaraith
> inspired by LIDENFILMS
> original story and art by Nakamichi Hiroo
> for any player count, age 13+
> Playing time: 5 minutes, potentially leads to another game of 276 minutes
...
-- Game Material --
> models of 3 girls, board game shop, manager
> locked boxes to be opened when instructed
> decision board, pawn
-- Game Setup --
Prepare the game by taking the two models of the introverted (Miki) and the cheerful (Aya) highschool girls out of the game box.
Initiate their starting situation by allowing them to meet, which results in them starting a quest that they'll try to achieve for the foreseeable future. As trivial as it might sound, this quest is an adventure to learn about fun and friendship.
The remaining unlocked models are now added to the mix (the board game shop+manager and the class representative girl named Midori). After making the three girls meet in said shop, the main bulk of our game (and the actual anime) commences.
Prepare a way to note or remember your personal score (which starts at zero), place the decision board in front of you, and the pawn on the first spot.
-- Course of Play --
The rules are simple and straightforward. You control the pawn and move it forward on the board, one step at a time.
On each spot, you decide whether or not you agree with the statement written on it, and if you do, add or subtract the respective points to your personal score. Once you reach the end of the board, your final score will determine the outcome of the game/review.
+2 -- I value the depiction of a growing friendship
+1 -- rather innocent and curious girls are someone I enjoy watching
+1 -- cute girls for the win
-2 -- cute-girl anime mustn't feature any males in order to be enjoyable
+1 -- looking for a slice of life setting that, next to hobbies, also deals with daily problems and interactions in school
+1 -- I don't mind if characters in slice of life anime try something new/engage in activities not commonly seen in anime
+1 -- plot progression in slice of life anime exists, and it happens via character development
+1 -- a colourful/comfortable/picture-book art style gets a thumbs up
+1 -- people are happy and grow to each other by connecting via shared activities
+1 -- having a vivid imagination is no foreign concept to me and/or I enjoy gamifying parts of my life
+1 -- terms and names such as Spiel des Jahres, Alex Randolph, Catan, Eurogame/German-style board game, mean something to me
+3 -- I am interested in what an upcoming board game author needs to worry about, some of the steps required for a board game idea to take form, and perhaps I even tried my hands on an own game creation
+1 -- modern board gaming is something that fascinates me or that I want to learn about
-1 -- traditional games such as Monopoly, Risk or Clue feel decently complex and are all I need
+1 -- when I hear the term "gaming", I picture things that aren't related to video games
+1 -- in case I am German, I like to feel good about my nationality and/or want to experience something that my country has historically been, and nowadays still is, worldwide known for
-- Game End and Scoring --
Your pawn has moved forward, has moved to the final spot, netting or losing you points.
Whatever happened, your final score now determines how this game actually concludes:

If today is the first time you've heard of "Houkago Saikoro Club", then let me tell you, it might just be your best day of the entire month! In any case, engage in this anime's world and get blissfully treated ^-^
(7-9)
Well played, and a worthy score for someone who might be looking for something comfortable to watch in order to calm down or explore the world of gaming. This anime is able to offer the desired variety.
(Treat this review as if it's rated 7 instead of 9)
(4-6)
If you are one of MAL's rare board game enthusiasts, Houkago Saikoro Club will almost certainly give you a blast of a time. And if you feel good about cute art and slice of life vibes while also being open to new ideas, this anime is a legit option too. In the end, you'll likely not have to worry about ending up with major things to criticise about this show.
(Treat this review as if it's rated 6 instead of 9)
(Less than 4)
Hmm, even though it might have come down to poor luck or other unfavourable circumstances, the chance of Houkago Saikoro Club not living up to your anime expectations has to be feared. The thing is, while this anime does offer a lot to those who scored highly or are otherwise intrigued by its vibes and themes, there isn't exactly much to find here for the rest of the anime populace. But hey, rather some specialised entertainment than everything trying to please everyone.
(Treat this review as if it's rated 4 instead of 9)

First things first, you probably wonder what the locked boxes contain and how/when to open them. Well, do you like to be surprised?
LIDENFILMS's adaptation of a comfy manga will introduce characters and games that you might have not expected, but which all add to the entire concept. A game needs to be played after all in order to fully realise the special emotions and interacting mechanics, and same goes for this series.
All games in the anime (aside from those created by voiced characters of the show) are real existing games, and details of all the game boxes are all legit.
The genuine interest in board games by the mangaka, Nakamichi Hiroo, is easily noticeable in both the anime and manga, thus having the board game topic is not done in a cheap way as quick attention grab, but to provide a window for everyone to realise that board gaming is a thriving hobby.
Speaking of which, modern board gaming is in a very healthy spot these days, and people like me can easily spend hours daily just to read about new games or play some with friends/family/coworkers/etc. Board gaming isn't physically demanding, which is also why virtually every age group from young to old can enjoy it, something we also notice in the anime.
And you know, speaking from personal experience, I've noticed board game friends (those who generally don't know about the existence of anime) share trailers and details about Houkago Saikoro Club, and some of them did start watching it. A broader appeal is absolutely there, which I can't say about a lot of other anime/manga that feature certain sports/hobbies as their main activity and quirk.
If there is something I've got to criticise, then that the episode length doesn't allow for actually complex games to be part of the anime, even though I would have loved to see some of those. Well, reason enough for me to get a hold of the manga and see what else we get gaming-wise. And isn't this what a good anime tries to achieve, making you want to deal with its source material~
May these girls and everyone else keep enjoying the activity of board gaming. Its potential is infinite!

Aria the Natural
(Anime)

One expression: "Embodiment of relaxing happiness".
Welcome back to yet another season of Aria. Never heard of this anime before? To put it bluntly: this whole series marks the pinnacle of entrancing anime Slice of Life. To follow the anime chronologically, please watch "Natural" only after you’ve finished "Animation", otherwise you might miss out on proper character and world introduction. Note: Alongside the actual review you will come across some diary entries written by our protagonist Akari in her usual cheerful way. Let them accompany you during your personal gondola travel throughout Neo Venezia as you read this humble examination. ~~~~~ "Dear Diary, how have you been so ... far? You grew quite big, but that's not bizarre, since I experienced a WORLD last season. You know, so many tourists have come here to see Neo Venezia, it would appear the colonization of Mars had a bountiful reason. My own task hasn't changed during this time... and it isn't only to make this rhyme! I guide my gondola over the streams of water flowing through this peaceful place and relishing the friendly people, the slower pace. This life is more natural than your dearest dreams." ~~~~~ "Natural" continues from where "Animation" has ended, and the premise appears as simple as ever: a bunch of cute girls rowing gondolas over the watery planet of Aqua (formerly known as Mars), experiencing countless everyday adventures. As one probably assumes: the plot stays calm and action-less, which may not appeal to everyone. Aria doesn't try to implement fast-paced scenes like all-in gondola races or natural catastrophes. Honestly though: this is by far the best possible outcome. So be prepared to indulge into pure relaxation... ~~~~~ "Ha-hi, I've become sleepy as of late - what can I do against this moony state? Maybe we've overdone the star-gazing a bit. So today I let Alice and Aika do the rowing and meanwhile watched the floating islands glowing and dreamed of a yummy banana split. Especially the three great Water Fairies Akira, Athena and Alicia know what carries our beloved Aqua below its top surface. So even I learn about the deeper meaning of flowers, or how to spend the most memorable hours. Together we preserve the peace in grace." ~~~~~ Every remarkable anime needs an interesting and unforgettable cast of characters, and Aria definitely delivers. The plot focuses on three apprentice undines (undine is an equivalent of gondola tour guide) and their respective masters (widely known as the "Three Water Fairies"), belonging to three competing companies. Yes, although they're competitors on paper, you forget that this is Aria, so they train and even celebrate together, not letting any hostile thoughts build up during the entire show. The tendency for names to begin with "A" is quite obvious, and one might think that this will result in challenges distinguishing them from one another. Fortunately, these difficulties are immediately scotched because of diversified traits all of these young women have, both in appearance and manner of speaking. One's for certain: You will never forget their key expressions and special faces, so what else would you need for characters to become memorable? ~~~~~ "Today reminded me of all my reliable friends: Alicia as my mentor doesn't miss a time and lends me her firm arm; oh this makes me so proud (: The practises together with Aika and Alice are by far the best method to maintain my inner peace. "Embarrassing remarks aren't allowed!"... Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh? And then there's my companion for everywhere: President Aria, the cuddly cat, takes utmost care of me during my adventures, in every case. Dear Ai-chan is mailing with me everyday. That's important since the postman tends to say that any letter can overcome time and space." ~~~~~ Concerning the other inhabitants of Neo Venezia, a special mention has to be given to the cats. Not only do they provide even more heart-warming moments by constantly being around as "presidents" of their respective company, but they also maintain certain traditions to add to the mystery aspect of the world. Being Slice of Life, it's only natural for our undines to interact with all kinds of people during their daily work. Everyone tells their own story and fits perfectly into the whole setting. As soon as the viewer identifies themselves with the general mood, watching the characters is an utmost bliss. As trivial as some of the stories may seem, they all carry a deeper meaning, and overall, help to eternally carve the world of Aqua into one's memory. ~~~~~ "Gliding Canal Grande under Rialto Bridge today, we met Akatsuki-san gathering roses for Boccolo day. He wants to see Alicia go "ara ara" again. Rumours say there's a woman in a black dress, connected to San Michele Island more or less. Yep, so much unfathomable wisdom there is to gain. Have you ever heard of Redentore before? The Wedding to the Sea or the golden oar? Maybe I should ask wise Grandma about all of them. Even the cats are keeping their traditions with mystic Cait Sith improving their conditions. Another detail in this as our world carved aquamarine gem." ~~~~~ Even if it's episodic, Aria's ability to tell profound and humane stories is virtually unmatched, especially concerning the Slice of Life genre. "Aria the Natural" succeeds both in surpassing its prequel through the sheer power of empathy and the preservation of its initial premise, yet always being special every episode. Admittedly, the style of the story telling may appear boring to anyone not accustomed to this kind of anime. Watching more than two episodes per day is not recommended, otherwise it will really be too much/too less for the viewer to consume. Neo Venezia and Aqua are generally places that should be frequented in short visits instead of long ones in order to completely admire their wonderful beauty. ~~~~~ "In the morning we trained outside of town inside some quaint landscapes of high renown; you even could see Hope Hill from there. Every minute we practise is to master the water with its clear and calm nature, it's like a daughter I need to console and for whom I must care. Oh, this place's life is certainly unique. Everyone's moving so smoothly I tend to speak with them a lot about the city's style. The buildings, while modestly tinted, stand just short enough to see the sky so grand and let us sense a light sea breeze awhile." ~~~~~ Natural’s art and animation unquestionably serve their purpose. The architecture of Neo Venezia with its detailed Italian touch and generally colourful drawing style make the town's visit aesthetically pleasing to the eyes. Being Aria, the overall manner of art isn't flashy but rather quaint, although special moments with spectacular light effects or noticeable water reflections aren't left out either. ~~~~~ "Today I couldn't concentrate myself too much on discovering another unique Venezia touch. It was because my ears were dancing... dancing after hearing Athena-san's heavenly voice and feeling Makino Yui on San Marco Square rejoice. Music assists and quiets me down before advancing. After noon we three indulged in delicious coffee while bearing the sun looking like a giant toffee. I hope the heat won't cause any illusion. So we sat listening to some musicians playing their plucked instruments under arduous conditions - music-less this world would fall into seclusion." ~~~~~ Music-wise the general mood stays the same as in every other category: calm and relaxing, but always soulful. Smooth tones brought to our ears by plucked instruments with occasional mystical chants and lyrical insert songs. One aspect in which "Aria the Natural" surpasses other anime is the everlasting vigour of the opening with its song "Euforia" performed by Yui Makino. I'm not exaggerating: This opening is the only one in all anime that I haven’t ever skipped; the impact is simply amazing. The seiyuus perform their assigned roles splendidly, and because of the previously mentioned main characters' impressionable manner of speaking, they have a high chance of staying in the viewer’s mind. ~~~~~ "The evening is wrapped by red warm tones which gently heal our hearts, our soul, our bones. I lie down on bed and take off my glove - this glove that isn't just protecting my hand, but also reminding me I have to understand: as Prima Undine I need more special traits I love. As a child I wanted to be a fairy flying around and make everyone merry; I reached this goal, without caring for a penny. All of these encounters here are the planet's bliss so in the end I thank you all, and 'may this town's kindness reach the hearts of many'." ~~~~~ A picture is worth a thousand words, as the old proverb says. If you're already familiar with the prequel "Animation", this sequel includes everything required to top your previous experience. To everyone who's new to Aria: This review is coming to an end, but your journey has just started and I hope that you have the necessary tools now to decide whether or not to give this outstanding anime a chance. Not to mention that its sequel "Aria the Origination" finishes the whole series in one of the most emotional ways I've ever encountered in anime or any other medium before. Aria had captured my heart in no time... so why not yours too?

Mushishi: Hihamukage
(Anime)

Recommended
Do not take anything for granted, not even life itself. This simple yet profound message is splendidly conveyed by another episode of the calming drug called "Mushishi". What an adventure this series has been; watching Ginko investigating various mushi species in a clever but always comprehensible way, not only curing every human in need of help whatever their origin, but also depicting the essence of life.
An anime not for everyone, to say the least, but certainly for anyone who wants to shed light on human mysteries. Ginko as our protagonist, being the most sincere and suave guy you could probably imagine, doesn't miss a chance ... to research the nature of the mushi. In this special "Hihamukage", he comes into a village which suffers from an unnatural darkness caused by an eternal eclipse. How is this possible and are there any mushi involved in this perilous situation caused by the missing sunlight? Ginko knows that you can't take anything for granted, therefore he has to do two things: convince the people of his earnest actions and restore the state being thought of as granted, where there's enough sunlight for life to flourish. The story is as innovative as it has been the whole series along, and the mystery stays on a level for itself. It's also a delight to see that the side characters aren't only there for being treated, but in the case of two quite different sisters also illustrate the correlation between humans and mushi and therefore nature itself. Mushishi takes place inside lush landscapes full of life and bizarre sounds. Upon entering a calm state, the viewer will find themselves immersing right into this vast universe where humans live an uncomplicated yet fierce life. The smooth soundtrack expresses everything it is supposed to and invigorates the general mood in a positive way. If you are a fan of the series, there's no reason to miss this beautiful special. Ginko hasn't lost anything of his awesomeness and the world is shown as mysterious as ever. Definitely a pleasure for the senses and a formidable way to promote the upcoming sequel.

Note: This review may appear quite long, but its structure doesn't force you to read everything, so please give it a fair try (;
-1- Imagine a life where nothing happens... Imagine unspectacular schooldays, getting up early, disputing with your little sister at the breakfast table, chatting with friends about trivial issues, learning stuff you won't need to consider ever again in the future, going shopping on the way home, and finally fall into bed utterly exhausted as if the world has changed, but in reality you just repeat the same cycle over and over... Escaping this kind of monotonous life is not as hard as you might believe, ... but one ability is indispensable in doing so: the ability to make choices. First off, everyone can swim along with the mainstream, not choosing anything on their own, and therefore repeating their everyday life. You have to realize all the possibilities to make choices which directly affect your future, most of them not even noticeable and done basically automatically. To stress the importance of choices even more, you will begin to recognize their relevance just by reading this review. Have you heard of "game books" before? Providing a formidable way to directly influence the course of the story, you will find this review having the same option to choose your own course. Why do I start with this explanation about choice-making, and how does it influence the actual anime we are talking about? In order to start, read on at -5-. If you aren't fond of making even the first choice here, and you also have the guts to defy this anime's god, the master of choices, proceed at -10-. -2- Typical for newer anime, the art consists of detailed and distinguishable character parts and overall colourful backgrounds. The animation is rather ordinary, but that's fairly normal for the genre at hand, so there's no problem to get accustomed as viewer. All in all the characters keep their moe-looking appearances and please our eyes in many ways. To change into the Sound part, head for -4-, otherwise continue at -6-. -3- As is often the case with RomComs, we have an above-average popular guy trying to keep his life in order while also having to deal with the distinctive cast of females around him. In this anime the guy's name is Kanade Amasuka; a boy who would actually possess a rather boring and average personality if it wasn't for the curse of "Absolute choice": a list of possible choices appearing right in front of his inner eye at the most inconvenient times. If you are familiar with visual novels, you will recognize this idea's origin at once. And guess what, these choices practically always force Kanade to perform highly embarrassing acts in front of his classmates. So why doesn't he just ignore this choice-making? Well, there's this peculiar being called "God" causing him immense pain upon not deciding. The same God also provides the only way for Kanade to cure his curse, namely by completing missions. Does he choose to fulfil them all, regardless of what consequences it may have for his future social life? To stress the romance part of the anime and in order to get Kanade more sensible on this matter, these missions consist of dealing with various girls in not too normal ways. If you want to know more about the female cast, venture forward to -7-, for just a small summary go to -12-. -4- The sound as well as the music are neither memorable nor anything special, rather simply the usual light-hearted tone suited for any school comedy. OP and ED are standard as well... but at least the handstand performance sticks out. The seiyuus are performing their assigned roles without apparent fault, and although they sometimes miss the final spark of emotion, I enjoyed listening to their diversified voices a lot. That's it for sound, so either change into the Animation part (-2-), or continue at -6-. -5- Ah, welcome. You've just done the first step in order to get to know this particular anime. Don't be confused by its exceedingly long name, "Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru" (engl. "My Mental Choices Are Completely Interfering With My School Romantic Comedy"), usually shortened to NouCome. Adapted from a light novel of the same name, the title is summarizing the plot quite well actually. Therefore, you can expect a solid RomCom with a main character suffering over having to deal with all kind of choices he has to make. If you aren't fond of RomComs or students doing embarrassing and crazy stuff, you can either try to sit through and change your mind about this genre, or you cut a long story short and skip right to the conclusion at -15-. Otherwise you get acquainted with the main character at -3-. -6- The enjoyment watching this anime won't reach any limit, if and only if you can cope with the general idea of visual novels, RomComs and don't mind fan service in a measurable, but not immoderate way. Coming this far through the review, you are most likely getting along with this idea and will eventually enjoy NouCome to the same great extent I did. See, to mark the occasion, god just decided to eliminate the second choice, so there's only one way to go on... that would be -15-. -7- As with every good RomCom, you need to have a multifaceted bunch of girls providing a diversified view of the romance aspect. This cast consists of three main heroines and roughly the same amount of side characters. Within Kanade's class, we have the white-haired Yukihira Furano, a shy and more silent type who doesn't miss a chance to call him by insulting names. She has a strange kind of humour, and doesn't show it nearly as openly as Ouka Yuuouji, the class' cheerful airhead who is constantly participating in every joke and acting quite frankly around Kanade. "There's no point in doing something boring."... a statement that would describe her life fairly well. Kanade, Yukihira and Ouka are also part of the so called "Reject 5", a group of the school's oddballs due to their overly antisocial behaviour. Since Kanade is forced to be in this group by the deeds of his curse, you can assume that he wants to escape his fate and therefore has a reason to complete his missions. The curse also provides him with human help in form of a beautiful sweets-loving girl suddenly falling from the sky upon him choosing it. She names herself Chocolat and causes Kanade to change even his life at home in many ways. Since she lacks some common sense, his life doesn't get that much easier even with the help of her knowledge regarding the curse. All in all, these main characters deliver a lot of fun throughout the whole anime, and the curse provides the needed freshness to get hooked immediately. If you feel that you haven't read enough character outline yet, go on to -11-, otherwise you may also proceed with Animation (-2-) or Sound (-4-). -8- You defied god, your fate's 'bout to change And no one dares to enter your range There is pain up ahead And no mercy instead Your surrounding's slowly getting strange With your senses going on decline Barely managing to see a shine Of a more blurry life Nearly devoid of strife Only one way remains, go to -9- -9- Decisions can save a lot of time But only ones not including crime You have to seize the chance Which promotes the advance Like I did when deciding this rhyme The whole world of anime just right Within your comedy-yearning sight With NouCome on top Not your average flop So now head to -14-, keep the fight -10- So, you regard yourself special enough to defy god and the world's rules? I will give you one last chance to correct the taken path by turning round, now aiming for -13-. Otherwise fasten your seat belts and continue at -8-. -11- More about the characters, eh? If you read these lines, then there's no denying you are already quite interested in this anime. A picture is worth a thousand words, and there's nothing inhibiting you to start watching it right after you finished reading this review. Female side characters include a little sister type, an abnormal teacher and the student council, and everyone gets enough time to come into their own. Experience them for yourself. Story and characters define an anime, but without the framework of Animation (-2-) and Sound (-4-) they couldn't support themselves properly. So choose... -12- Eh... so you really thought that short summaries are sufficient enough to describe women? Don't get any false impressions of life. If you are now ready for the "normal" female review, turn to -7-, otherwise you may continue with Animation (-2-) or Sound (-4-). -13- There's no fault in trying to swim against the current. Sadly though, nearly every world in confined by rules, and therefore you mustn't quail if a choice doesn't bear fruit. Other choices are awaiting you in your life as well as in this review, so turn your attention to -5-. -14- But regardless, there's one thing to mention Some time ago, you turned your attention To anime and more And that's the perfect door To be able to grasp the dimension And so I hope for you to forge ahead To escape this loop, conquer your dread choose anime once more don't care about the score you've got time, head to -9-, relieve your head (Only read the following lines if you have completely understood the poem's intention, otherwise head to -9- as described!) The first version of this review wouldn't have contained any escape routes out of this loop. But after getting the possibility to contemplate your actions, there isn't any easily understood reason for you to not deserve a new chance to use your power of choice. You may start into the actual NouCome-review now by going to -5-. -15- So, how does it feel? Ready for a romance apart from the norm concerning its premise, exhilarant characters providing nice jokes while the poor guy gets embarrassed and the constant recall about the consequences of choices? I have to admit: recently there are lots of anime about romance stories in a school environment... but the simple difference which distinguishes NouCome from the rest is the actual concept of these hilarious choices Kanade has to make, reminding ourselves of the importance always accompanying choice-making. And hey, this anime just has ten episodes! At least trying it won't cause any problems. The final choice is awaiting you, probably being the most important one in this review... read on at -16-. -16- Although you are bathing in this review's aftermath now, there's a high possibility that you will encounter at least one choice directly impacting the environment around you at least for the rest of the day. Maybe you choose to watch this very anime, "Ore no Nounai Sentakushi ga, Gakuen Love Comedy wo Zenryoku de Jama Shiteiru", and suddenly your little sister bursts into the room, discovering your secret anime crush and in the end becoming your discussion partner for the newest shows. Life is a series of choices. But one thing's for sure: you won't advance if you don't choose... So here's your final choice: • Rate this review 'Helpful' • Rate this review 'Not Helpful' (feedback is greatly appreciated) • Just bid farewell

Katanagatari: a tale of twelve twisted swords,
which keenly point their sharpened blades towards just anyone who's thirsting for their mighty power and therefore causing uproars and a troubled hour. Harrying this ward - ++Zettou Kanna++ the first sword To wield a sword, you need courage and a certain reason to use such a deathly tool for committing life treason. ... Explore your innermost nature and understand the way! "What do you fight for?"... it's not just a simple play. Another slain lord - ++Zantou Namakura++ the second sword Now to find these swords and also their own true self, our two heroes set sail in search for these twelve relics of Shikizaki Kiki's most famous smithery, which became an unfathomably perilous reality. Limits ignored - ++Sentou Tsurugi++ the third sword So who are these guys who try to fulfil this task... since this turns out to be a crucial question to ask! In short: they are a pair like moon and sun, and always questing for a way to get their fated journey done. A wicked reward - ++Hakutou Hari++ the fourth sword On the one hand, we have the lovable and initially almost naive swordless swordsman Shichika, who's always ready to receive new inspirations to improve his Kyotouryuu style, while learning who in this world is actually hostile. Honour restored - ++Zokutou Yoroi++ the fifth sword But despite his godlike and agile physical condition, his inability to deal with other people is obstructing the mission. So what do you need?... that's right, some feminine support; more so when she calls herself out of the strategic sort. Lost in the ford - ++Soutou Kanazuchi++ the sixth sword Her name is Togame, an ever so excitable mastermind, directing Shichika out on their struggles to find a clever solution to combine their strength and wits and to make the best use out of their given skill kits. By demons adored - ++Akutou Bita++ the seventh sword Between the fights, some great character development is shown; their interpersonal relations won't let them feel alone. And even the romance part is not suffering in any sorts during the time between "Cheerio!" and writing strange reports. Never explored - ++Bitou Kanzashi++ the eighth sword Along the road they will encounter lots of mysterious guys, adding an amount of serious dynamics and refreshing surprise. Everything is held together by a fantastic animation flow; this and an effective drawing style are defining the show. Harder than steelboard - ++Outou Nokogiri++ the ninth sword This tale takes place in much older Japanese times, when it wasn't abnormal to suffer more from intrigues or crimes. So although the music is decent, it's scarcely used, if yet at all. Just focus on the perfect voices and how they will enthral. Lunacy's accord - ++Seitou Hakari++ the tenth sword Do not be frightened off by the unusual episode length, but instead try to find your cause to fight, your inner strength. If you are fond of shows like "Bakemonogatari" or "Spice and Wolf" it's a mostly guaranteed journey into your favourite gulf. Containing a horde - ++Dokutou Mekki++ the eleventh sword Finally, stanza number twelve... what have we learned so far?... The so called "Deviant Blades" will always stay special and bizarre! Now join Shichika and Togame's travel until the bloody end and you will surely get into a yearning for all to comprehend! You'll never get bored - ++Entou Jyuu++ the twelfth sword

Comedy always was and will always be a double-edged sword. Either you burst out laughing, laying waste to the nearest furniture in the meantime, you get what you came for or you only manage to grin faintly at best... the summoned feelings can differ significantly between two otherwise similar persons. You don't need to be an expert to find out about this swing of feelings when searching for something fun to read/watch. But one comedy genre stays out of this top-or-flop cycle, since it deals with themes we all are quite aware of or had been in the past and ... where we will almost always inner agree; the adventures of being a child. The starting quote, basically being the leifmotif of the manga in question here, sums up a certain child's life perfectly. You surely recognized by now: this child is named Yotsuba and the manga deals with her everyday adventures. Seeing our today's world through the eyes of a kid... what can there be to it, you may ask? No, do not think of an ordinary farmer's girl or one living in a wealthy mansion. Think differently! Direct your thoughts into the mind of a young girl coming to town for her first time. How will you process all the impressions you perceive? Are you actually overwhelmed? Does curiosity seize you completely? Close your eyes for a short moment and try it... Imagine... ... ...... ......... ............ ............... ............ ......... ...... ... So, what have you seen? Maybe a great shopping mall, an awesome articulated bus, wide streets or huge crowds of all kind of humans? Have you deeply inhaled this air of novelty into you? Now, you are prepared to attend Yotsuba on her efforts to understand and enjoy her upcoming life. Following are some thoughts I have to direct to her: * Yotsuba, what a crazy and inquisitive five-year-old child you are. You do not need many dialogues to demonstrate your outgoing character, you gain new friends in no time, you face your goals head-on. Even with tiny things which adults tend to overlook; you will find a possibility to make the most out of them. * But what I admire most about you, Yotsuba, is your sheer ability to make every new experience an adventure, thus sharing some kind of life consultation with us. You show us how to not hold back in front of unknown places and conquer new life areas with lots of curiosity to receive an everlasting memory. Seriously, many people of today's society could learn a lesson from you and your pureness. Or, to put it into your father's words: "Kids really can jump into things without holding back." * Yotsuba, in addition to your adorable nature, you are really fortunate to have such a supporting folk around you. Be it an adrenalin pushed dance with your daddy, your visits next-door (you sure don't get bored of them) or you curious talk with a random shop clerk, you will definitely remember them for their unexpected helpfulness in guiding you through a world of infinite potential. "We really live in amazing times", Torako says, and it definitely seems so for you; every day is another amazing one. * I'm not overdoing it by giving her this much credit. She really deserves all the given attention. Now, beside her memorable character, let me mention another point which distinguishes Yotsuba's life from other children based comedies: While other works may work with forced and somewhat cheesy punchlines at a chapter's end, this comedy always keeps its human nature and won't exaggerate (it doesn't have any need to in the first place), which will let you smile and enjoy her life even more. You know, smiling and laughing have a much deeper meaning in life than you probably would have thought. Are you actually aware of why Japanese people have such a high life expectancy? It's partly because they laugh a lot, not only to jokes, but also to issues where other cultures would rather look away or might feel offended. I've recently watched an interview with three Japanese centenarians stating exactly this matter of laughing as their main reason why they live on. No wonder they became this way, since they can enjoy such splendid comedy manga their whole life along without any problems like ceasing replenishment of fresh works. In addition, if they had grandchildren like Yotsuba, what other things would there be to wish for? For myself, I'm able to admit without a doubt that having a child like Yotsuba would greatly increase the value of my life. Seriously! Yotsuba... so why is this manga actually called Yotsubato? The "to" after her name means "and" in English. "Yotsuba and..."; It has been Yotsuba and me for a long time now, and I hope that in the near future, we can proudly say: "Yotsuba and you".

So while bombarded with more minor + + + + places and people, and praising the designer, the simple truth is: you will stay tuned + + + + + and endure this anime for opening a wound. A wound so deep you will likely ask + + + + + + how the director has failed to fulfil his task + to use the immense budget for a far+ + + + + more coherent work, and not one this bizarre. But still this show gets so much hype + + + + + + + quite similar to SnK, it‘s equally unripe. + I would say: just watch it for yourself + + + + + + before it catches dust on your virtual shelf! + Do not let yourself overconfuse + + + + + + + + by some of the far too harsh troll reviews! It‘s your average show, like many other. + + But see, even average doesn‘t always bother. + I even rewatch the opening from time + + + + to time just for its beginning‘s catchy prime. + + + + + So I conclude this review by expounding my final point in a clear way: + + + + + + + + + + + do not expect an awesome story, thrilling moments, more bloody prey, + + + + + + + + + + + + but instead an anime made out of popular and fan-serving material, + + + + + + + + + + + + + +which will at least be entertainment next to your breakfast cereal! + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

So what on earth? What have I done?
How am I not able to feel the stun?... I will write about "Attack on Titan" here; but yeah, I'm no fanboy trying to endear myself to mainstream now or in the longer run. I turned towards this show unbiased considering its popularity at highest. I wanted to see if this action show at least conveys more meanings than being a bloody feast. ... But in the end: people and story at its driest. So hundreds of years ago, the humankind is letting itself be completely confined by dim-witted looking titans there inside a 50-meter wall ensnare and is now searching for ways to get behind. Then suddenly, a 60-meter giant attacks and many more titans are making their tracks. The wall can't hold it anymore and so the humans are fighting another war. Their enemies won't give them more time to relax! The first few episodes are quite intense, experiencing human's crumbling defence, getting their normal lives torn up again, having to survive in a diminishing den, and nearly losing their last kind of sense. We follow Eren, who has to sustain his mother's loss, indeed a great pain. He wants to kick some titan's ass and finally falls into the shounen mass, always acting like tightened by an angry chain. Accompanied by one of the few more normal humans, Mikasa, whose true intention is to save her Eren and so she's getting ears more barren despite her strength she would rather sue. The third in league, weak fair-haired Armin, stays the cowardly one with a frightened face. He tends to think far more than others but is mostly hindering his brothers. He needs lots of time to realise his place. So maybe you would think that some other guys inside these walls don't try to bother, but instead act more heroic inside this hell. You see, Commander Levi's the only one memorable; he wouldn't even trade his tenacity for his mother. All in all, these characters just won't try to develop properly and we ask why? Why haven't they used episodes five to twelve to let them build some features or delve into their motivations or what they go by? Seriously, you won't remember any other names. They die like flies and only the main remains. So I really wondered the whole time where the more seasoned soldiers would deign to dare to get into the fight, but you know what it claims... And then, the probably most important thing: What are the titans? Ruled by a king? What are their bloody true intentions? Hinder humanity from some kind of interventions? We aren't informed, and that's a serious sting. However, the style and art does kind of save all it from falling into a much more deeper pit. Detailed architecture and nice quality, although the animations strive for equality, but the art got me astounded, I must admit! What you will hear is mostly amazing. The music improves the already fast pacing but cannot reach my most favourite sides like Code Geass with "Stories" provides. So it's epic, and rather the common saving. Special mention for an awesome opening theme mixing German and Japanese for deserved esteem. It conveys this rather intimidating mood, lets us taste of the upcoming action food. Believing the whole show's that epic: it stays a dream. Now summarizing art and sound: they're nice; but paying with a decent story at least twice. Man, there are so many episodes for fill, the pacing is off, the direction needs skill, inferring that eight episodes clearly would suffice. Some people will ask how I can say this show is average and carried away... It has nothing like a memorable plot and tends to dramatize quite a lot, just not worth for every fan to stay! I can't deny the certain amount of joy the first few episodes deliver, oh boy! But after that, it's nothing new... No inspirations I aim to pursue... Its part to perplex hardly evens the one to annoy. So this practically concludes my review. "Do not believe the hype" became so true! If you like some standard action shows, then Attack on Titan doesn't have much to oppose, but otherwise it isn't worth any ballyhoo.

Starting notice: a sudden desire urged me to try a different kind of review. So the following stream of words consists of two completely separate reviews, segregated by The Wall. Read it your way and enjoy it, for this is the main reason I guided some additional trains of thought through my brain.
"The world is no longer the same it was." So, I immerged again... right into a new anime world going by the meaningful name of "Sunday Without God". Yes, God has literally left this world, bereaving humanity of its most essential abilities, namely giving birth and dying for good. In order to prevent the ... bodies of people who would actually die, but cannot anymore, from rotting away, the so called gravekeepers are capable to grant them their final rest. And one of these gravekeepers is Ai, a 12-year-old, slightly spoiled girl who doesn't know anything of the world outside her calm home village. But suddenly, by some unfortunate coincidences, she is forced to leave her self-built cage of quietness and has to enter a world unbeknownst to her. Getting in contact with other peculiar characters trying to come through life without a god, not much time flows by before she has to deal with important questions like: How can this world be saved from its fate? Is dying actually that bad after we know it has been taken from us? What does it really mean, being a gravekeeper? Or how can I let my comrades remember the positive side of life? The last point mentioned leads me to Ai's personality. Somehow she reminds me of Taiga from Toradora with her looks, and so I initially thought of a more tsunderish behaviour to be seen. Nope, Ai starts pretty girlish, a bit impulsive, but stays calm enough, and the life in the village made her naive against more complex things. And then, as the anime advances, especially since it is only 12 episodes long, I really have to compliment how firm and diversified she becomes towards the end. I don't use this word often, but I have to admit that, all in all, Ai is just cute in both her appearance and her behaviour. The other characters are all likeable enough. They don't experience the same kind of development as Ai, but have their stories to tell and sometimes mentionable traits to reveal. You certainly won't get bored by them. A last mention on the main story. It doesn't meet a final or conclusive end, so maybe you will be a bit displeased. But you know, there is always the possibility to read the novel, which I actually haven't read, but certainly it contains satisfying answers to your remaining questions. Art- and soundwise actually only one word is needed: Enchanting. To give some more annotations for the detail-loving ones: Since quite a few scenes happen during dawn or dusk, oftentimes this 'yellow' prevailing mood is conveyed. And this is accompanied by astoundingly stunning light and shadow effects. The enchanting soundtrack gets noticed and varies to suit the special mood without a God. Animation is fluid and has some awesome 3D-rides in store, showing up even in the opening. Now that I mention it, both opening and ending are beautiful and nearly melancholic for me now. They won't get boring too soon like so many other ones. "Each of us sees a different world." So, these words are optimal to impart my final thoughts. This series turned out as an unexpected fabulous tale, and so, in case you relish anime with an enchanting atmosphere, an adorable girl as lead character and themes like dealing with the dead, then for God's sake, watch it. And even if you see the world in a different way than me, you still have to assert that this show is a million times better than the crap today's television mainly provides. Deem these 12 episodes as a present to fulfil your life. ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________ Another day without the God... Why did he leave a world so torn? The dead walk on, are left to rot and human life cannot be born. So gravekeepers are bound to give the walking dead a gentle fall. We follow Ai who strives to live, to save the world, to save them all. Beginning as a naive child who doesn't know the world outside. Develops firm and inner wild and lets the better thoughts abide. Discovering peculiar guys, the dead's country or even school, receiving words pensive and wise, she slowly learns the keepers' rule. In colours mystical and bright the world illuminates its thoughts. With stunning shadow-use and light the people rise above their hearts. The music part is not just bound to great open and ending themes. Since life and death itself far sound, the world is tangible, it seems. Although the story doesn't meet high standards or a final end. Enjoyment smoothly plants its seed, and I stayed with it where it went. So when the tension falls and grows, you have to feel and to endure. Beside some mainstream actions shows this is a jewel, that's for sure!

There was a time when children watched decent American cartoons and Japanese anime on TV. Then around 10 years ago, at least in Germany, the quality of the shown material worsened rapidly. Animes were cut out of the program nearly completely, most of American and European productions lost all value, and so my time in front of the TV mostly ended. I am so content now that there are other ways to watch anime and I don't have to miss heartwarming anime shows like this one, Tari Tari.
"Where did I come from, and where on Earth am I heading?" So then, what is there to expect?... ... actually a bunch of high schoolers who search for a way to graduate properly and to live on after. For Sawa and Wakana, it is a struggle because they have to face tragedies or objections within their families, and for Konatsu it is a fight to overcome an embarrassing past experience. The story shows their efforts to bear with these burdens and how to remember their high school time: through the passion of music. Together with Badminton-fanatic Taichi and the peculiar Austrian student "Wien" they form the (not only, but most of the time) Choir Club and begin to understand what it means to live for something. The story is kind of slow-paced, but has a clear goal and gets you hooked up especially during the last episodes. The music theme is transported throughout the series, though I would have liked to see more choir performances. The ones you will see, however, are quite a pleasure to hear to, notably "Melody of the Heart", which gave me shivers at the end of episode 2. Character-wise I cannot think of anyone who I despise for being there. They all have a personality that interacts well with the flow of time, and also the "antagonists" get a decent grip in the whole picture for a 13-episode-SoL-show. Character development is mainly focused on the female characters, for they overcome their burdens and Konatsu in particular develops a firm mind to carry the choir towards their mutual goal. Animation and art serve their purpose: The characters look natural and move accordingly. Backgrounds are vivid enough to differentiate, and there are no flaws in landscape or the school, from which I love the view over the sea and the architecture. Voice acting and background music are done without complaints, but aren't special either. So then, before I drift away into stating mere facts and make the review unnecessarily long, I would like to mention my final thought. For a Slice of Life anime, a certain vibe is essential to carry the sometimes trivial messages. Tari Tari stays true to its melancholic and friendly touch and shows us another time how purposefulness and friendship can conquer personal and even greater problems. Together with moments worth remembering like the stage performances, what can YOU make wrong in deciding to give this show a real chance? I enjoyed it all the way through ...
