What is the anime about/ Setting:
The setting is a typical fantasy world, but the persons who have been transported to this world (isekai-ed) from our real-life world, are a whole school class. Not, like usually in this kind of show, just one person. These isekai-ed pupils plus their teacher (Teacher = Aiko Hatayama) are heroes who have been summoned by the o so great god "Ehit" to 'save mankind'.
However our protagonist "Nagumo, Hajime" gets the worst skills possible. He isn't an honorable hero like Kouki Amanogawa, or a priestess like Kaori Shirasaki, or even any other of his
...
classmates. He got the most useless job class: Synergist.
This leads to the events of the first episode. The summoned classmates go to explore a dungeon. However one of the supporting characters sets off a trap. This teleports all of them to a floor that's very low in the dungeon. Here some monsters appear, while they are crossing a bridge, these are way too strong for them. And thus, a "Behemoth" and its disciples spawns. They are too weak and can't beat them. Then Hajime tries to be a hero and save them. He does manage to buy some valuable time so the others are able to get away from the monster, but as he tries to run away too, one of his classmates shoots a fireball. This fireball breaks the bridge under his feet and he falls down into the deep, dark depths of the dungeon. So there is a traitor under his classmates.
This is the setting; Hajime has to survive alone in the depths of the dungeon and get out. His newfound goal is to return home, home as in his earth. This event is referred to as "The Fall".
Characters:
He meets a diverse cast of different characters in his journey to find a way home. A few of these are the girls who decide to follow him and form his harem. A lot of them are different races or have extremely different skillsets.
The Bad (in no particular order):
1) The quite commonly used CGI. Especially often used on Monsters and their attacks, this just looked atrocious. (2/10)
2) Hajime, after "The Fall" becomes more and more Chuunibyou and Wannabe-Badass, edge lord. It's quite cringy. Luckily this is not constantly a problem, but often enough to be extremely cringy and annoying. (5/10)
3) Hajime repeatedly just pulls new, never before seen abilities, vehicles, and weapons. It's NEVER explained, how he got them, how they work or where he got the resources to make them or the idea for them. This is, especially, an issue when one tries to assess his strengths and answer questions like: What are his weaknesses? Does he even have weaknesses? (4/10)
4) The pacing can be really weird and off throwing. This is felt even more awkward coupled with the terrible animation and the atrocious CGI. In fighting scenes, this is very obvious, but it is sometimes (granted, less often) in slower scenes weird and off throwing as well. The pace changes so quickly with no warning that you sometimes have to ask yourself: "What the fuck is even just happening and how did we get here?". (6/10)
5) The good scenes are often ruined for no reason. For example, a decently made emotional scene gets abruptly ended because Hajime makes some weird-ass edgy remark and the scenes, or the atmosphere, is ruined. (6/10)
6) Even though there are visible attempts to characterize some of the girls (for example), Artifura fails to really give any of the characters, though some are more affected by this than others, more dimensions. They all feel like 2D figures with no real, or at least no realistic, personality. Since there are attempts made this is not a complete catastrophe, but this has to get better in the following season 2. (5/10)
The good:
In actuality, this is more of a guilty pleasure anime for me. Despite its many flaws it is quite entertaining, to be honest.
1) Some interesting idea, that, at least I, had never seen before. For example the protagonist and his weapons. He uses modern weapons like handguns as an example. (7/10)
2) I liked the cast. It is so diverse, such that Clarce, Tio is half-dragon, Yue is a vampire, Kaori Shirasaki is human, Shia Haulia is a rabbit human mixture (demi-human), Myuu a Dagon (a sea human race), and Hajime is a Human-Monster Hybrid (Post "Fall" at least). (7/10)
3) I like how ruthless Hajime is (post "Fall"). This is quite a contrast compared to a lot of isekai protagonists. He is, at least in that regard, similar to Naofumi Iwatani alias the Shield Hero. (7.5/10)
4) This is not always true, especially some of the fights (which are ruined by terrible CGI), but this anime is just pretty enjoyable. (7.5/10)
-> 6.3/10
