Frieren. An anime set in a classic fantasy world where Frieren, the elf wizard, has defeated the demon king and his party, namely; Himmel the hero, Eisen the dwarf, Heiter the drunken priest. Several years after the defeat of the demon king, Himmel the hero finally died and at his funeral Frieren finally realized how indifferent and apathetic he was towards the people around him. After that, Frieren was determined to go back on an adventure while studying and trying to understand how humans view life. That's how the story of this anime begins.
As a fantasy story set in a different world from the real
...
world, this anime has received more value from me, because creating a good fictional world is not easy (8). But the fantasy world in this frieren feels very bland, because there is nothing special/unique. Only classic fantasy worlds like LOTR are set in ancient Europe. Even non-human villages/cities are not shown, so the fantasy impression is less (-2). But the explanation of political laws, nature, magic techniques, cultures, etc. is explained very well (+2): total score = 8
Graphics/visuals: One of the anime with the best graphics in the last 10 years, the image style and colors used are very pleasing to the eyes. The magic and battle visual effects are also epic. (+10)
Sound/ost/music: Throughout the show it is never quiet, there is always background music that really fits the scene. The op & ed are also nice to listen to and the lyrics also seem to tell the contents of the anime indirectly. Even though it's not a banger. (+9)
Characters: Most of the characters in frieren are boring, and many of them have the same (similar) characteristics, this makes their interactions sometimes awkward, like seeing npc characters in an rpg game. For example ; Frieren, Fern, Serie, Land, Laufen, Kraft, Lernen, 3 subordinates Aura, Qual, Sense, Eisen. They all feel like the same character (6). But fortunately these characters are paired in a group with very interesting and good characters, such as; Frieren and Fern are paired with Stark, Land is paired with Ubel, Laufen & Richter is paired with Denken, Freiren & Eisen is paired with Himmel & Heiter, etc. So every couple/group has someone to break the awkwardness so that their interactions are no longer awkward (+1)
total score : (7)
Story: In terms of the story offered, Frieren is actually not that interesting. As proof, let's try using a simple method: 5W + 1 H.
1. What/what? : What is the main purpose of this story? Initially, the main goal of the frieren was to go on an adventure to collect magic while studying the human perspective on life, as well as trying to fulfill the "last" wish that he could grant for her party friends (Eisen & Heiter) (7). But after episode 4, after meeting with Eisen & reading Flamme's book, the frieren's goal changes to going to the aureole to meet & chat with the spirits of Himmel and possibly Flamme. A trivial goal for a fantasy story full of magic, it doesn't invite enthusiasm at all to continue watching (-5). = (2)
2. Who/whom: I have explained this in the character section (7)
3. Where/Where: I have mentioned this in the point about world background above (8)
4. When/when: The explanation of the time setting in this anime is very good & clear. Each time jump is shown neatly and precisely, it can be seen from the growth of Fern, Flamme, the parents in Qual's seal, & the date of Himmel's death. (10)
5. Why: Every action/decision taken by the character has a logical, strong reason and is in accordance with the nature, rationality and laws of his world (10).
6. How: Solving problems in several places that Frieren passed seemed to appear suddenly, such as; blue flower search. Or it may seem cliche, like; Stark recruitment, Aura attack, Qual fight, Sein recruitment. etc. There are no interesting plot twists given. Which should be one of the strong points of an adventure story like frieren. (6)
Total score: (43/60) = (7.1)
Story visualization: This is one of Frieren's strongest points. The visualization is very good, so there are no ugly and unnecessary long dialogues that are usually found in anime, especially during battle scenes. Examples include; visualization of hiding mana, magic techniques, the passage of time, character traits & thoughts, etc. (10)
Entertainment: This Frieren is very, very entertaining and a treat for the eyes and ears (10). But unfortunately, for me this frieren is less memorable. There are very few moments that I can remember after watching Frieren. What I remember after completing Frieren twice; the moment Frieren cries, aura's battle, the final battle of the Chunin exams, Himmel's ring. The rest of the show, I have to re-watch/watch TikTok to remember/realize that this scene is in the anime. This proves that what makes me entertained and enjoy watching is actually the visuals and audio, not the story (-2) = (8).
Total score for Frieren: (59.1/70) = 8.4
