Well, this is my first review here on myanimelist, and im not going to make a story/art/sound/etc review(because the two seasons of Code Geass have a really nice art and a not superb(but fine) soundtrack) rather im just going to say why R2 is a disapointment but at the same time worth watching.
The original series, which i saw just before R2, went straight to my favorite anime list, and i would brag to my friends on how awesome it was, and how close it was to the greatness of Death Note(my favorite anime of all time).
One can see a lot of similarities about the two
...
animes: although the background is very different(Death Note has a more crime/thriller vibe to it, weras Code Geass is like a massive coup d'etat with briliant military strategies) both have a main character, who is a sort of villain, or more like an anti-hero.
Anyway, as i finished R2, i can no longer see the similarities between the two animes no more. CG R1 was smart, it had a good cast of likable characters, had an excelent pace.
As i pointed, the first anime was about a "coup d'etat" of sorts, and one could easily relate to the motives backing Lelouche actions. The second one is about a massive world war 3(not literally), and it becomes TOO MUCH confusing to follow. In order to demonstrate how confusing R2 was, i watched R1 with english subtitles, as i watch all the anime that i see. Before i started R2, i though "ive got to see R2 with portuguese subtitles so i wont miss a bit of the story". And so i saw it with the portuguese subtitles, and i can easily say, i understood R1 a lot better than R2, its just too many characters(and some are really cast aside during the majority of the anime(Kallen and C.C. come to mind)), a lot of different names(Characters, Knightmares, Spaceships, Cities, etc. for one to follow), and a lot of characters changing sides.
And the pace of the events its just too fast for you to follow all the plot-twists, characters changing sides and the massive battles that take place.
Anyway, i rate it 8, because even though its much worse than R1, it continues to deliver: the begining and the ending(The conclusion is just brilliant (better than Death Note's ending) and thats definetly a plus)
of the anime easily keep the quality of the original series, its just sad, that the middle part of the anime, just cant keep up with the rest.
