Let me state that I haven't read the manga nor am I an Ultraman fan, so my review is based only on the anime and aimed at those with no particular attachment to the Ultramanuniverse.

I scored it a 7 basically for the good animation, character design, and action sequences. The series is really entertaining and fast passed. The fights have nice choreography and are visually astonishing. The scenes where the new Ultraman Taro (this is no spoiler, he is in the promotional banner) is the protagonist are highlights of the series and worthwhile watching by themself.

On the negative side, the whole story, which spanned only ... 6 episodes, feels really rushed. There are massive plotholes that are immediately evident to the viewer. It feels like there are at least another 4-5 episodes missing in between. Some characters appear out of nowhere and change the course of the plot just because. Definitive events are just reversed out of nowhere and without explanation, kind of ruining the experience of having an emotional investing moment that is totally meaningless 2 minutes later.

Overall, if you have seen the first season, I would recommend watching this one too... but be aware that you are going to have the feeling that this one is way too short in comparison. If you have read the manga.... then skip the anime.... don't watch it!! unless you are able to enjoy the animation without getting frustrated with how much it differs from the manga.

I have to say that I'm watching this anime out of pure and utter nostalgia... I know that I saw it on TV in the 80's cause much of the art of this anime is firmly printed in head as one of the oldest memories I can recall...

This surely caused a big big impression in my 3-4-year-old brain... so much that when I caught a glimpse of some footage of it and was able to recognize it I knew I had to watch it!!! I felt the urge to see those images again...

So.... for the actual review...

The animation is as old as it gets... borderline ... being black and white.... but its ok as long as you set your mind to watch a 34 yrs old anime.

The art is AWESOME... especially the background art!! some of those sceneries could very well be on a canvas in a museum hall.

I have to say that the 3rth arc is the one that fascinates me the most. The land of Ev is filled with incredible surrealistic landscapes... dried out oceans, ancient crumbling ruins, sandy graveyards littered with rock-giant corpses..... Ev could be the setting for an incredible RPG campaign.

The soundtrack is incredible too... with a jazzy vibe that feels kind of over the top for such a simplistic animation.... but nonetheless is very enjoyable.

As a final remark... I have to say that chapter 35 is the one that struck me the most... the whole rock-giant fight and escape scene is the one that was more deeply engraved in my memory and I felt and incredible fascinations watching it 30 year later for a second time.... and I have to say is one of the few chapters that I feel any grown-up could watch and not realize it's from a show aimed at kids.

I'll try to be as objective as I can writing a review of an anime that I'm really reaaaally enjoying.

In my personal profile I scored this anime as a 10... but for the sake of objectivity, and considering the whole universe of anime production I can't in good conscience sustain that 10.... but it is a solid 8... a very solid 8!!

You won't find any supernatural powers, any incredibly complicated signature move, any unrealistic habilities in this story..... what you will find is basket and real-life problems... things you can relate to!

The characters are realistic, each one with its own personality and problems. They ... have depth... they have good background, credible motivations and their own objectives. Although there is a "main character" (Sora), any of the cast could be the main character... they don't feel accessories at all to the MC... and this is something that is seen less and less in current animes where EVERYTHING tends to be centered in the MC.

I don't usually watch sports animes because they tend to exaggerate a lot the habilities of their protagonists.... but this time is not the case and I'm very happy about it.

The quality of the animations is consistently good... not superb, but really good. But the most important part is that it is consistent, I can recall only one or two moments when I saw a noticeable drop in the animation and drawing quality.

I'm up to date with the episodes, having seen 35 of them and the only thing I can think of is "When is the 36coming out!?!?". When an anime succeeds in making you feel excited for the next episode and you find yourself checking the release date every couple of days, then you know it is a great anime (at least for your taste).


I would gladly recommend it to anyone... but especially... I would recommend it ASAP to anyone that is new to anime.... it is a great entry point for anyone that wants to see anime but finds the mainstream ones kind of over the top for their liking.
