Honoo no Alpenrose: Judy & Randy (Anime) add

Honoo no Alpenrose is a fairly predictable and by the numbers World Masterpiece Theater clone but that's not necessarily a bad thing since those shows were always pure , Had likeable characters and good moral lessons and this show is no different . I found myself invested in the first half of the story as the struggles the main couple faces and their search for answers amidst the WW2 setting were really interesting . Unfortunately the quality of this anime takes a massive nosedive after Judy resolves the situation at her home

Before that the only downside to me was the amount of times they managed ...

Angel Heart (Anime) add

Mixed Feelings

Similarly to Asian dramas Angel Heart is often times cheesy and overly dramatic but certain arcs were so heartwarming that I couldn't help but loving it regardless . The beginning is kind of rough but when the show started going I found myself loving the cast and the relatable themes it touches upon . In addition as someone that was looking for some semblance of closure after watching City Hunter I sorta kinda got it here but I wish it was a legit fifth season instead of a spin off . Tantei Gakuen Q (Anime) add

Coming from the same creator as Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo Tantei Gakuen Q is another detective anime and to make a long story short despite enjoying watching it (At least after the first few lethargic episodes) I have the same opinion about this anime with the one I have for the Kidanchi Returns seasons and that's that the bittersweet soul the original 1997 TV series had is absolutely gone and the more taboo topics have been severly toned down

City Hunter (Anime) add

Mixed Feelings

Typically I never "hate watch" stuff but City Hunter was one of the very few exceptions mostly because I'm a complete sucker for the charming 80's music , Animation and overall vibe it provided . Filler is synonymous with made for TV anime because the idea is for the viewer to be able to pick it up at any given time and never feel lost if they know the basic premise...Which is fine unless you decide binge watch it

Predictability is to be expected but the fact that at no point does any character have meaningful character progression is a huge turn off for me ...

Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo (Anime) add

Typically in most reviews I've seen not only in this site but in general when one loves something they either turn a blind eye to all of it's faults or damage control them to high heaven using fancy words in order to gaslight the reader into believing what they're saying

I'll tell you straight up that I LOVE Kindachi Shounen no Jikenbo . Everything and I mean EVERYTHING that I look for in anime or Asian drama's in general this anime does it . Despite the innocent enough artstyle don't get it twisted this anime deals with some heavy taboo subjects and the good guy doesn't ... win the day often even if Kindaichi manages to solve the riddle

What I adore about this anime though is that it isn't cynical or nihilistic . It's endings sad as they may be are always bitter-sweet with a glimmer of hope . The crimes themselves are for the most part well put together even if at times you'll have to suspend your disbelief quite a bit (More on this later)

Animation wise it's nothing exceptional but it's rare for me to care about that unless it's an action anime but the voice acting and music especially kick ass

Despite all of this this anime suffers from a few things that might annoy you the point of dropping it entirely and they are all valid points

For starters many crimes are extremely reliant on luck to be pulled off and largely because of that Kindaichi sometimes is written into a corner where he has to have some nonsensical epiphany of what happened usually by seeing something completely random like a half eaten cake that resembles the number 8 or something dumb like that (Something something circumstantial evidence and all that)

Secondly there are many times where you don't get the same clues Kindaichi does so you can't really participate in the "Who done it" . For example Kindaichi will notice a lady with a dirty glove but you won't see that the glove was actually dirty . This especially happens in the filler episodes which is a super cheap way to keep the mystery well...A mystery

In addition the crimes themselves can be a bit too...Complicated just for the sake of it . It's fine when the story calls for it and the crime was done by a mastermind such as Yoichi or X in the Russian doll murders but ain't no way that some regular dude won't just stick with old faithful like a silencer or a poison or something

In addition too much of something is never good . The number of and especially the filler episodes hurt this anime A LOT not only because of the repeating premise (How many times can Kindaichi AND Miyuki stumble upon a crime scene?) but also because they try to pull at your heartstrings too and you start noticing a certain pattern

Way too many times someone was killed because of a misunderstanding and the 10th time you see it you won't be able to bring yourself to care about the victim or the culprit as you get desensitized to it . I believe it was towards the 100th episode mark and more specifically the high school reunion arc where I visibly laughed at the "why" everything transpired . Despite the good intentions the anime at times devolves into a parody of itself if that makes sense

So yeah it's far from perfect but like I mentioned in the beginning it had everything I personally look for in an anime and I'll 100% rewatch some of my favorite arcs at some point in the future

Ningen Kousaten (Anime) add

Every episode in Human Crossing is dealing with a new set of characters that come with a new set of problems . The stories for the most part usually have to do with simple every day life problems and how we can learn and move on from things that are holding us back and to it's credit the show deals with a variety of issues that you will most likely relate with at least one character by the time you are done with it

That being said it's hard to recommend it because in my opinion even if you do end up liking 2-3 episodes ...

Salaryman Kintarou is legitimately one of the worst anime I have seen in my life

The premise is interesting enough as it showcases Kintarou who is a former gangster turned salaryman trying to survive with his son after losing his wife in an environment he isn't used to . His extremely honest personality initially rubs the higher ups and his colleagues in his work place the wrong way until they see the light and realize how their quality of life is bettered once they become more honest with themselves as well

That sounds kinda cool right? But guess what it isn't

Why? Because Kintarou is loved by EVERYONE ... . Every woman and I mean EVERY single one of them in the show wants to "date" him and his former rivals that turn to friends worship the ground he walks on and cry every time he does literally anything. He is portrayed as the realest , sexiest , toughest and luckiest human being walking gods green earth . Mind you that to an extend this would have been fine but he has the personality of a dishwasher and all of that admiration is never earned

To give you a basic understanding at one point Kintarou is sharpening pencils because he is incapable of doing anything else in the company and somehow everybody in the office applauds him for it saying that these are the best sharpened pencils ever! . Lmao who wrote this shit?

Continuing on with how terrible this character is , Kintarou initially disregards advances from women because he is still very much in love with his late wife and wants to focus on raising his son which is extremely admirable but of course they fuck this up as well

Eventually Kintarou meets a woman that everybody wants to bed because she is wildly considered to be one of the most beautiful women in all of Japan so what ends up happening is our poster boy takes a bet that he can indeed do it and without a shred of buildup he sleeps with this woman who also ends up worshiping the ground he walks on because of how awesome he was in bed despite "finishing" extremely quickly . Trust me if this sounds obnoxious it's even worse when you actually see it

Get this though! He sees his wife from heaven in a dream telling him to move on and that she's OK with this . So what does Kintarou do? He scratches his ass , yawns like a neanderthal and continues his day without a single comment about what transpired . This was the point where I stopped watching as I couldn't take it anymore

Salaryman Kintarou is the anime equivelant of Neil Breen and I was utterly flabbergasted that in the end we didn't get a mecha version of Kintarou that fought against alien invaders

I could touch upon some other things like the low budget stiff animation that constantly reuses scenes but I wouldn't have minded if the story was good . The verdict used for the 1/10 score perfectly encapsulates how I feel about this anime

Suzuka (Anime) add

I had written multiple reviews about all the romance anime I watched and I deleted them once I realized that I more or less had the same gripes with all of them . Because Suzuka was my first review on this site and I'm feeling nostalgic I thought to edit it and give a review that will encapsulate my thoughts on this genre as a whole since I love it and hate it in equal measure
