Simply re-reading the parts gave me some insight into this part and slightly changed my mind about it. Unlike the anime, the manga puts more emphasis on the mystery behind the mask and sets up Battle Tendency a lot better. Also learning that Johnathan did a lot of research on the mask further intrigued me with his character than before.

I read this all the way in 2023 because the anime went away from my streaming service(plus at the time, TYBW wasn't a thing yet) and in my eyes, the end of this story makes it the weakest in the Big 3. I've watched Naruto, started on One Piece, and now have read Bleach and most of my issues with this series take place during the time skip(volumes 49-74). If you're looking for a series with a main character that's very nuanced and layered, Berserk is the story for you. Aside from the dark elements that may or may not be for you (as nothing is held back in this seinen manga), more than anything else, this is a story about characters. Berserk changed my life and continues to do so in so many ways as a young adult that I can't even go over it all.
