This anime has good bones. It is very interesting. It just could have been better. These are my two main problems. 1) certain things aren't explained very well. 2) It feels like this anime is stuck between a few different anime genres.
1a) It is explained in the beginning how different mages are rated against each other. That was with the whole bronze, silver, gold, and platinum square system. But I didn't really pick up on how magic they use was explained. It seemed like it was just "People can use different types of magic because they know how to use it. OH, and their
...
magic usually develops alongside their familiar." But it never really said ANYTHING.
1b) The Main Character also has golden mana, but that was never really explained WHY that is important. If another character said "Golden mana is extremely rare and only the strongest of mages ever have a small amount of that." then that would have explained it! All we get though is other characters looking at him with surprise. Then his Golden mana turns into Silver mana, and an opponent has Purple mana. There is no explanation to why different colors of mana are important.
2) This anime feels like its between Romance, Action/Shonen, and Ecchi. However it doesn't really decide on any of these, or at least it falls flat with trying to be all of them. If it prioritized one of these genres and kept parts of the other two then it would have done rather well. Like if it was mostly Romance with parts of Shonen and a little bit of Ecchi, it probably would have been a lot better. Heck, in any combination it would have been a lot better! It just fell flat when trying to be all of these equally.
2a) Now to be honest with how much this anime leans into its Ecchi, how important its Romance is to its Plotline, and how lackluster the Shonen-like fight scenes were I think a different change altogether would have improved this anime. That is.... for this anime to be changed entirely and become a hentai. Now listen, listen hear me out! Don't leave just yet please. Its VERY strongly implied in my mind that the MC and his Familiar are doing more then just kissing each other. Heck in her first scene she's NAKED and
later on she's fully exposed when its just her and the MC behind closed doors and they have multiple secret make-out sessions in the hidden corners of the school. Of course with this being an anime we don't see too much and its all just left unsaid/implied. However, if it did change genres to THAT then I think the mediocrity of everything else would be forgiven.
Anyway that's just my two cents. Don't get me wrong I thought this anime was good, however I now that it could have been great. I did like the Ecchi parts (a little overkill at times & I'm just that type of person) and I thought the Romance was sweet and wholesome (I'm a sucker for that type of thing). However Reader your thoughts of the show are your own and I REALLY doubt anyone in this shows production will see this.
