Azumanga was, well outside of Lucky Star, my intro to true anime. Not the stuff 4kids put out. And wow, as a kid just entering middle school, I thought at the time I hit the jackpot. It was very relatable with a lot of it's real life personal issues and connections, but also extremely funny with tons of references that, well, most I didn't get at first *thanks omnibus that I got from Borders before it shut down*.
