Nostalgia play a big part in these stories. Unsure of their futures, both main characters look back into their meaningful pasts in an effort to regroup their thoughts and decide what they really want for their lives onwards.

When you think about it, high-school students are not always nice at each other. They get into heated arguments and fights. They always want to be the best at what they do. They are selfish. But in the end, all is game and fair, and everything is worthy of respect. Both series capture these realistic elements like it's the easiest thing to do.

Nodame Cantabile

Okay, this is a wacky recommendation since both are different in target audience and content, but they are very similar overall. Both series have a simple but meaningful story about pursuing goals and overcoming trials featuring very realistic characters with very realistic motivations set in the real world. And if this helps, both are very simplistic and comedic in style with great execution: no overly idealistic deep dialogues, no unnecessary complexities of any sorts, no moe, no fanservice, no edginess or whatever that plagues today's industry. So if you're someone who appreciates anime on a personal level or just wants a refreshing experience, pick up one or both. Just remember that Hajime no Ippo is a shounen boxing anime with lots of action, while Nodame Cantabile is a shoujo/josei anime about classical music with some romance so one's taste might not suit the other.

Both series revolve around an absolute judging system that decides a person's fate by his/her mental & emotional stability, actions and/or other factors. Eventually, we are shown the questionable credibility of the system through one of the leading protagonists' point of view.

Are you tired of shows that offer nothing new to the table and only recycle story ideas over and over? And have you started thinking you want to make fun of these never-ending clichés? Let these two shows do the job for you. The sources of laughter are generally the amount of hilarious parodies of clichés of the genre/demography they represent. While Gintama makes fun of overly-used shounen ideas, Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun does it on the shoujo aspect. And they are done by their own colorful cast that you can't help but adore. So if you loved one of them, you'll love the other too.

The heroes of both manga share the same personalities: strong, reckless and caring for their comrades. They also share a similar dream of one day becoming the greatest in their own right. One Piece progresses by having tons of adventures, while Kingdom progresses by having tons of warfare. Both manga also focuses on many subplots as you read further, which eventually leads to revealing mysteries and conspiracies.

Haikyuu!!

A combination of two teammates, while they may not be the best of buds (in Haikyuu both are tolerable to each other, but in Slam Dunk they both hate each other's guts!), struggling on their way to become the best in the sports they play may be the highlight similarity between the two sports manga. But what makes both series like twins is that you can feel the teams' lust for victory, note the term lust. It's the same feeling you get when you watch real-life sports teams and athletes battle out each other, especially in high-school and university levels. There is also a very strong sense of rivalry not only between the team and opponents, but within the team as well. Expect also a good laugh as you read along the way.

The heroes of both series, although different in motivation, have the same goals, and that is to exterminate the creatures that push their mankind to fear and despair with the help of their special powers. But there is more than that; both series revolve around the question of one's humanity. While SnK takes this on a subtle approach, Kiseijuu is direct to the point it is the manga's main theme.
