Travel is the main them of Kino no Tabi and Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro, with the protagonists visiting different cultures and people in a world not really like our own. Kino and Kuro are tomboy-ish and don't bother correcting people for assuming they're girls. Also, they have an unorthodox traveling partner who tends to be less serious than the main character (a talking motorcycle for Kino and talking bat/bats for Kuro). The stories are episodic with each chapter visiting a different place before being forgotten for the next chapter.

These two are action series not afraid to show gore, though Hellsing is the gorier of the two. Seras(Hellsing) and Aiko(Variante) have quite the similarities from going berserk, unable to cope with their new change and some of the scenes of Aiko snapping look very similar to Seras from volume 7.

At its vaguest, both movies can be summarized as "Elementary school students go on a journey to a place not like our usual planet at all and start off having fun meeting the friendly, but not human-like, people around them. This new world starts off fun but gets serious as there is a clear crisis that the kid/kids solve." Although there is only one main character in Brave Story and several in Welcome to the Space Show, they are all very young and do end up far away from home with odd monsters/aliens you would expect to see in a movie aimed at children. Both are very appropriate for kids, though I would say Brave Story is more serious with more character development and more serious themes. The art of both the kids and the other species around them also have a similar appearance.

The female protagonists of both have a very odd and detached sort of personality. They are also immortal. Fairly average guys follow them around. The atmosphere of the two is very similar as well. If you liked the premise of one, you'll enjoy the other.

The genres of these two shows are slice of life with a few supernatural/fantasy quirks added. A plot later does reveal itself. The two start off with a very similar atmosphere of a sleepy peaceful town and a newcomer to that place. If you can stand slow pacing, these two are great. Along with a similar atmosphere, the music is also very similar. I can't stress this enough. I had to actually check if they had the same composer but they are different. Both soundtracks are very great. Also, if you were alright with either one of the two shows endings which left a few unanswered questions, you'll be alright with the other as well. They have satisfying endings.

Biggest similarity is the teacher and student living together. Teacher is sort of silly in both. Main female characters are likable and have a spine. Equally funny.
