Similar use of metafiction and absurd to explore the boundaries between fiction and reality. Pretty different shows overall but I found similar themes and narrative sensitivities.

Coming-of-age stories with a strong focus on "reality vs. fantasy"' coping and aceptance. Lots of first-person monologue and supernatural elements to support their narrative. Good at different things so both worth watching.

Rather standard crime dramas with a similar underdog setup + a sci-fi twist. Also, video game adaptations.

Both are part of the "young mystery" subgenre of japanese young adult fiction. They use mystery/thriller elements in a mundane coming-of-age narrative as a ludic resource for the growth of the characters rather than being too convoluted or dark.

Coming-of-age tale of a somewhat apathetic kid playing adult with a surreal twist + an adult woman to portray change, confusion and wonder. Not as action-packed as FLCL though.
