Two seminal, dark, innovative and evolving shows that are political critiques and allegories set in closed off spaces no one can really leave (although it's your "true self" that cannot physically leave Ohtori Academy in Utena, unless the character beats the adversaries in the themes and becomes their own person). Utena critiques the patriarchy, all levels of misogyny including grooming and sexual assault, homophobia and biphobia including compulsive heterosexuality. It also shows how all of these are connected and how easy it is to miss that fact. Attack on Titan does the same but with slightly different topics, those being fascism, racism, xenophobia and war. Both are also filled with mysterious worldbuilding, foreshadowing and twists that heavily recontextualize information from before. There is sword fights in both. Oh also both have lesbians!
