With how popular and highly rated this anime is, I had pretty high expectations and expected it to be a kind of fantasy-comedy kind of thing. The first episode even gave me Walmart-brand Kobayashi's Dragon Maid vibes so I expected it to be okay, though it seemed I thought too soon.
From the blatant sexism from the main character to the side characters (joke or not) to the mediocre story to the harassment,
(There are no specific spoilers, though it does vaguely reference things that happened in the anime though not enough to be considered a spoiler)
Story (4)
After Sword Art Online, No Game no Life (and
...
other animes similar to this), gained popularity, the trope of being in a kind of fantasy-word/video-game-fantast quickly became overused and old. And the main idea at the beginning, AKA the protagonist taking the wish-granter/goddess with him instead of one of the many powerful weapon or armor or power choices was probably one of the stupidest moves anyone could choose (as seen later on in the anime).
Art (7)
I actually liked the art style. And compared to the styles of other animes and/or mangas that came out around the same time, it isn't bad. That's all I got because I don't have much to say about the art style.
Sound (6)
The soundtrack is pretty generic, the intro gets old after a while and gives me even more Kobayashi Dragon Maid vibes. Throughout the show, it occasionally tries to make stuff deep by having the intro in the background? I don't know but it didn't.
Characters (3)
The main character, Kazuma, is my main issue with his anime because. He is constantly degrading his team/party-mates despite them doing most if not all the work most of the time. He's a perv who at one point even makes them (including minors) do sexual things to/with him (As seen in the OVA). He has no development whatsoever, and he tries to pin the blame of almost everything he does wrong on the people around him along with being un-appreciative and, again, sexist and a pervert.
Despite what most of these reviews say about the side characters, they really aren't that bad. You have Aqua, who is a literal goddess. Who despite what people say about her in these other reviews, is not useless. She could be seen healing and even reviving people constantly, she's so powerful she even starts a flood without losing much magic. The main thing about her that has people calling her useless is that she's whiney.
You also have Darkness, who's a crusader whose sword hardly ever hits. She's a masochist which makes her pretty useless at times but her personality really shines sometimes and shows she really has a heart of gold.
And lastly, you have Megumine the fourth and final member of the party. Despite only knowing one spell, she knows the most powerful spell possible (explosion magic), though whenever she uses it, she is paralyzed for the rest of the day. And in spite of only knowing one spell, she shows being incredibly useful every chance she gets.
Enjoyment (3)
Throughout the entire anime, I was constantly either uncomfortable or wanting to scream at the main character. It constantly made me frustrated yet I still finished it hoping it might get better (spoiler alert) it didn't.
Overall (4)
I learned a lesson from this. The reason this anime is rated so high is probably because a bunch of gatekeeping sexist males rated this.

Mirai Nikki was said to be really good and it is/was very popular, so I decided to give it a shot. And overall the results of that were quite disappointing.
No spoiler review
Story- 3/10
The concept for Mirai Nikki was quite amazing. Though the show poorly executed it. The show constantly made twists that could either easily be guessed or made no sense what-so-ever. So many questions were left unanswered or unaccounted for. Along with so many unnecessary parts of the story that didn't add to the plot, and really couldn't even be considered filler. Concerning the battle sequences, though they are entertaining, they are rushed. Along
...
with little to no build-up leaving no excitement really, for while you're watching it. Along with the last couple of episodes basically changing the entire original point of the story (though I guess that happened a LONG time ago) and ending with something that could be the premise of an ENTIRELY different anime.
Another part of the story is how the main part of it is the romance between our main male and female protagonists. Personally, in my honest opinion, the story definitely could have been portrayed far better, and the overall score of the anime would have been higher if it didn't main in romance. The relationship of the two characters is based on using and toxicity, though that will be saved for the "character" aspect of the review.
Notes: the story is a complete catastrophe.
Art- 6/10
The overall art of Mirai Nikki was good, nothing really off about it, and the animation was definitely well done. But nothing really stood out about it compared to other anime. Battle scenes were animated well, but as said before, always ended far too quickly. As far as character designs go, they are decent, nothing really standing out about them really.
Notes: No notes
Sound- 7/10
The sound is mainly what stands out in Mirai Nikki. The soundtrack is well done along with its fantastic intros and outros. Overall there's nothing really wrong with the sounds.
Notes: Listen to good music kids
Character- 2/10
Where do I start. Character by character? Sure.
Yuki
A horribly written protagonist. And it's not because he's usually terrified and a wimp. Most would be in his situation. Its because
-He gets no character development for about 8-17 episodes. And then his personality does a COMPLETE 180 suddenly around the last couple episodes.
-(Spoiler reason) He feels NO sympathy for the fact that he just killed all his friends.
-He's WAY too forgiving. About EVERYTHING. Like- he forgives people for some pretty fucked up things.
-He's in love with a psychopath. He calls her a nutcase for 90% of the show, as will be noticed, and is suddenly in love with her. You USE her for 3/4 of the show, deny it, and are SUDDENLY in love with her after ALL the FUCKED UP SHIT SHE DOES TO YOU AND PEOPLE YOU CARE FOR.
Yuno
The fact that she is a yandere is her ENTIRE personality. She's got nothing other than that. She acts innocent, then murders. She's selfish and psychotic, but people ignore that and love her because she's a blushing murderer. And although she says that she loves Yuki, she murders people he loves and manipulates him into murdering the rest of the people he loves. There's NO love there or in that. So her ENTIRE personality is basically a lie.
Basically all the diary holders
Most of the diary holders probably had potential. Only thing is that most of them only got one personality trait (Most of the time it being "I'm a psycho") and only get an episode of screen time. And they basically all have SOME sort of traumatic past. Also adding to the fact that EVERY diary holder has a traumatic past but Yuki, which doesn't add up what-so-ever.
The side characters
Most of the side characters that weren't diary holders were pretty flat and like the diary holders, basically had only one personality trait or none. Most of those side characters were, although that said, weren't that bad and were actually quite good characters. Though didn't get enough screen time at all. Other than that the only thing I got to say about the side characters is that Akise basically carried the show in the "characters" area for me. He was the only one that figured shit out (other than Yuno at some parts).
Notes: Akise carried the show for me
Enjoyment- 4/10
The only reason it's this high is that it was amusing to watch the main protagonists suffer every once in a while. That's all.
Notes: Make the main protagonists suffer.
Overall- 4/10
I mean, I probably would recommend it to a friend if they asked for either "A popular bad anime" or "an overrated anime". And that basically states my opinion in this anime. The anime is overrated. And going with the poor characters, bad plot, but good music, and amusing protagonists suffering, overall a 4 out of 10.
Final notes: I said it twice ill say it again, Akise carried the fucking show.

A friend had suggested this anime to me a while back and a couple of days ago I had the time to watch it.
No spoilers
Story - 8/10
In my opinion, the story and concept were beautifully written and thought of. Especially considering that the entire story had to fit into a 25-minute episode. Two friends who are separated by distances far away, and try to keep in contact with each other. And as the distance grows, it grows more difficult, messages taking longer to go through. There isn't much more to say on the story due to the episode again- being only 25
...
minutes.
Art- 4/10
Unfortunately, comparing to other anime's art styles at the time it had come out, it was a poor art style. Though the art style did work well with the space battles, I'm afraid that's all. It was at the point where the characters looked very different depending on the angle, and it was hard to decipher the character's emotions though they looked like it was supposed to be clear on their face. Overall the art style really isn't that great.
Sound- 7/10
The sound was quite redeeming in the story. The AI's voice was played well, along with the electronic and mechanic noises such as the blasts and beeping. Along with sounds from the character's surroundings were played quite well. The thing about the sound though is that with the characters, along with the animation, it's hard to tell their emotions.
Character- 6/10
Considering the 25-minute span, it's obvious we weren't going to go too deep into the characters. It's quite impossible. So within the span of 25 minutes, we don't get much of the character's character. And like said before, it was hard to decipher if there was any, emotion. Though it is mainly shown through the actions they make that show how they are feeling.
Enjoyment- 8/10
Hoshi no Koe has such an interesting concept. Could it have been portrayed better? Yes. But that doesn't mean that it hasn't already been portrayed well. It's a beautiful and emotional story that I did like.
Overall- 6/10
Overall, all things considered, I'd give the OVA a 6/10. Like said earlier, the OVA portrayed the story well, though the animation and character are lacking. I would suggest this to a friend if they were looking for a quick watch, considering it's only 25 minutes.
