As I have played the visual novel trilogy some years ago my judgment will be biased towards the positive I believe. This review does not contain any spoilers.

A bit of a TLDR and comparison to the original works,
If you haven't played the games this adaptation is based on it attempts to cram a 95 hour long VN trilogy into most likely 4 hours. This is not a good idea IMO.

The consequences of compressing a trilogy to 4% of its play time is the story skipping most stuff while being a constant info dump for most of the beginning episodes. Combining this with absolute horrendous to ... okay 2D art will result in an anime that seems to have no redeeming qualities. Even as a person who has read the trilogy the pace of the anime is nauseating during certain episodes and the budget seems to have gone completely to the action scenes, which currently are a mix between beautiful 3D CG and high quality 2D art.

I would really not recommend it when compared to the original trilogy but it might be watchable as stand-alone anime even if it is going at break neck speed thought the story. I personally really like this anime as I am watching this show with a huge smile on my face because it brings back memories of the trilogy.
End of TLDR

If I were to watch it without any understanding of the source material, the 2D art quality and rushed story would make me question if it was worth watching and the action scenes (even if there only is a few as of episode 4) and characters would make it worth watching.

2D art:
For certain wide-shots they will basically use CTRL and + to zoom in on faces without redrawing. This would perhaps not be such a big problem if not for the awful quality in some wide-shots.
The quality of the faces can sometimes be good but most of the time it is below what would be expected of an anime released today, especially the placement of facial features.
I would say that about 75% of the time the 2D art is good or acceptable and the rest is laughably bad.
In action scenes the 2D part is well made with the exception of some character shots.

3D CG:
As it is mostly used in action scenes where the budget seems to have gone I would say it is some of the best 3D CG combined with 2D that I have seen in anime as of now. (Excluding the first episodes background for certain parts)

Story:
The story is at least in the first episodes an info dump with flashbacks. I seems like it would be hard to follow thanks to the constant new information being given to the viewer that could possibly be seen as random. Though I could be wrong as I might be comparing it to when I read the trilogy.

Voice acting:
I have no problem with the voice acting, seems to be normal for an anime released today.

Sound and BG:
I really like the sound and BG for the anime as it fit's very well with what is happening on screen. It is not as bombastic as modern shōnen anime but it fit's the theme of this show perfectly.

OP and ED:
The OP is enjoyable and contains a nice preview and hints for the show while the ED gives more background to the characters.

Summary,
A horrendous adaptation but it could be enjoyable as a character driven mecha show especially if they fix the animation problem with a BD release and pull-back on info dumps by giving the story more time to develop naturally.

I started watching Gurren Laggan expecting a good show with jokes and interesting characters. Instead i got a show where the creators held an acceptable to even a good show in fort of the viewer only to snatch it a way at every possible redeeming moment.

In the beginig it's sets up an interesting and mysterious world only to slowly be forgotten and tease the viewer with the idea of "what if". The show is one big tease that never goes anywere. After a certain length in the show, character development stops completely for the majority of characters and the ones left ... are not interesting.

It was agony to finish this series as it had great potential but faild to accomplish anything. One big trap drawing you in with the first few episodes only to later turn in to a mediocre and downright annoying show. If you ever doubt the shows direction, than you might want to stop watchin to save time as it IS one big tease.

As you might understand I really didn't like this show, but it had good art and a weird but awesome soundtrack to try to keep it watchable. I really wanted to like this show but in the end, I could not find anything good, both from an objective and emotional point of view that would redeem this show in my opinion.


If you like a 27 episode tease, then this is the show for you! Otherwise don't waste your time like i did hopping for something else.

The show would have been fine if they made an episode or special changing a minor part of the ending, namely Yoko, or atleast gave some closor. I would love to see a alternative series where Yoko and Simon at least talk after the ending, before growing old.
