I've put off writing a review for this show a lot of times. It's one of the best reviewed and most praised anime of all time, currently sitting at #1 on MAL. And I felt conflicted on this since I started watching it, so I think I'm just gonna say what I feel and try not to think too much about it.
First of all, the things I liked: I actually thought that alchemy was an interesting as fuck concept and that it was really well implemented in the story. And that was probably my favorite thing in the show, the story. I liked all the
...
twists and turns that it took and how everything slowly unravels.
The animation was also really good, and the artstyle really fit the tone and world the story took place in.
But I didn't like everything in it, and that's where the problems started forming for me, the story didn't really balance well the attention that it gave to some plot points compared to others. Like Nina for example, for such an important part of the story and the main characters' motivations, I think that it could have used one more episode to develop, since two scenes of them playing together wasn't enough to build a connection with me, which led me to fell nothing when the thing that happens to her happened.
Which brings me to the thing that I probably liked the least in FMAB, the characters, I think that most of them (with the exception of Edward, Alphouse and Hohenheim) weren't that well developed and I didn't care for a lot of them. Especially the villians, since most of them get "last minute development".
Another thing that I had issues with was the pacing, since the show slows down at the middle and I felt really bored when watching it (but I think that that was more of a me problem).
And also the comedy sometimes outstayed its welcome.
However, what saved this show from being a 7/10 for me, were those 2 last episodes, because I absolutely adored them, everything was wraped up nicely and I ever cried a bit ngl.
So I think that’s it, I like this show, the story is interesting, but a lot of the times it failed to keep me invested (especially in Briggs), and the characters were not that amazing for me. But the strong ending, and interesting concepts make me think that this is a solid 8/10 in my eyes.
Thank you so much for reading through this entire thing! It really was hard for me to write this since it is my first review, and I really wanted to like this as much as everyone else xd. But I didn't, and that's ok.
