Macross: Do You Remember Love?

Two great '80s sci-fi flicks that successfully balance science fiction themes about space travel (Honneamise) and aliens (Macross) while maintaining engaging romantic plots. Great for fans of sci-fi OR romance, and best for anybody who loves a good combination of the two.

Abenobashi Mahou☆Shoutengai

Abenobashi features some great animation direction from Gainax animators like Hiroyuki Imaishi, who made his first big splash with the mind-blowing visuals in FLCL. Both series also follow a boy's emotional growth, though Abenobashi's development is considerably less bombastic and blunt than FLCL's. And of course, both are full of hilarious otaku-centered humor.

Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo

They share romantic themes with their focus on young love, and both have a tragic edge to them near the end. Plus, both of the films center around the visual motif of a girl running. As such, I often tell people that The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo) feels very much like it was made by Satoshi Kon (director of Millennium Actress).
