(Written based of light novel works for anime swell) (Might include minor spoilers)
Have you ever heard the term that if one of your organs is terminally ill to cure it you have to eat the same organ to cure yours into health? This term has many different meanings in this anime, one of which you can see in the title.
“If someone in the past had a part of their body that wasn’t well, they would eat the corresponding part of another animal.” - Sakura
I chose to write about this anime for many reasons, one of them being its praise for being very emotional and
...
that you get in touch with the main characters in a different way than you do with most animes in the same genre. The cliche of romance drama animes is difficult to avoid these days because that's what’s usually popular and gets off the shelves, but this is one of those hidden gems which totally differs from the norm. What differs from this story is what it portrays and conveys. Any normal romance anime would follow the main character's path to falling in love with each other and climbing the obstacles ahead of them to finally be happy. But this anime takes a different approach to the romance genre, I would say this anime is more of a drama than a romance which you indefinitely get to know in the prologue chapter where you could say the whole anime is spoiled which I think would be a bad thing in most cases but I really loved it in this anime because it really helped to bring out the emotional aspect of the anime.
The beginning of the anime is set at the funeral of one of the main characters Sakura Yamauchi, You can also see the second main character Haruki Shiga laying in his bed. “From both the funeral and the wake, I was absent. I stayed cooped up at home.” Haruki then gets up from his bed and looks at his phone. “This was the last text message I sent her. ‘I want to eat your pancreas ‘ Just one short message.” The beginning of this anime is just phenomenal and everything links together and has a meaning, I think Haruki plays a big role in this anime, and more so you may want to think Sakura dying is the sad part of this anime but in fact, its Haruki which makes this anime all the sadder. To understand why this anime plays with your feelings so much I think you really need to understand our two main characters.
Even though I said this anime differs from cliche the anime still follows the norm to some degree, In the beginning of the story we can see Haruki in the hospital picking up a mysterious book with the title “Living with dying” intrigued Haruki opens and reads it. This book happens to be the diary of Sakura, in the diary, he reads that she has a terminal illness and will die in a few years. Sakura who then is revealed to attend the same school as Haruki then released comes to retrieve the diary and then asks Haruki if he is surprised. Haruki just shrugs her off and leaves without giving it a second thought. The next day we can see Sakura tell Haruki to keep her illness a secret though she hasn’t told anyone. With this, you can get a clearer picture of our two main characters. Haruki Shiga is anti-social, introverted, and shut out from the world and barely shows any emotion throughout the anime. Then we have Sakura, the popular girl with a lot of friends. She is a very outward person showing a lot of emotion but secretly hiding that she is dying. And that's what I mean with the cliche part of the anime, the introverted loner gets together with the popular girl in school which is ever so overused and almost seen in every romance story there is. Even though this is boring in most situations but with Sakura's special situation I think this works surprisingly well even though it can seem a bit boring.
“If you want, I’ll spend the rest of my life hanging out with you.” - Sakura
Intrigued by the polar opposite personality of the two Sakura decides to spend the last years of her life getting closer to Haruki even though Haruki opposes it. The story then revolves around these two very different people and their weird relationship and with the story not only their relationship deepens but also their characters. The story really only revolves around the main character and there aren’t really any other side characters that have a significant impact on the story which I really like. Sometimes different side characters can be really annoying or make it difficult for the main characters' bond to grow closer which isn’t the case in this anime. I really like that aspect of the anime though you seemingly grow much closer to the main characters and get a kind of enclosed feel while watching.
Throughout the story Sakura’s behavior doesn’t really change, she stays her outward cheerful self but we do get more insight into her character. Even though we get the impression that she is very brave and isn't scared of death there are instances in the anime where she shows herself very vulnerable and worried about death but only when she was alone. The story really only follows Haruki which leaves you guessing Sakura's real emotions and what she really feels about death but the small indications throughout the story really help build up that weird feeling of sympathy and sadness for her which I really enjoy. What you don’t know makes you intrigued and invested and it really draws you into the anime and character.
What I really liked about this anime is how it really created a special kind of sympathy for Haruki, in the beginning as said he is very isolated and unemotional but the further the story goes the more we get to learn about him stuff like that he shut himself out from having any relationships because he is scared to hurt other people by his actions. But throughout the anime, Haruki slowly begins to open up and appreciate others solely with the help of Sakura. With Sakura warming up his heart new feelings begin to bloom and without Haruki being able to convey his feelings he lost everything when he finally had it in the clasp of his hand. I really enjoyed Haruki’s character and what he did to make this anime work the way it did.
The ending of the anime is really impactful and is filled with some emotion-heavy scenes where we can see both Sakura's friends and family grief over her death including Haruki which is really I thought was really impactful to me as a watcher seeing him grief so much when he came off as so emotionless. I really loved this ending as it tied up the story together perfectly and answered some lingering questions asked throughout the anime and surprised you with new facts you would’ve never suspected.
With this amazing story's end, you will certainly have gone through a rollercoaster of emotion maybe even shedding a couple of tears. This short anime is perfect for someone who wants a short watch full of emotions and which definitely will get you to feel sad in the end. Though this anime takes a very modern approach to the drama/romance genre I think it would be enjoyed by every age group because the story is pretty simple. This certainly is one of the best animes I've ever watch and I'm happy to have watched it, I strongly recommend this anime to anyone that's looking for a short yet impactful watch.

(Written based on the light novel but works for the anime aswell) (might be minor spoilers)
"The past makes you wanna die out of regret and the future makes you depressed out of anxiety. So by elimination, the present is likely the happiest time." -Hachiman Hikigaya
From the outside, My teen romantic comedy is wrong as I expected or “Oregairu” in short might seem like your average rom-com that’s come out in the last few years with nothing special going on about it. but don’t get fooled for this is a masterpiece!
The rom-com genre is always an easy genre to mess up, making an anime
...
with nothing special going on about it. In my eyes a bad anime is an anime that just follows the generic storyline not standing out, that’s what’s so hard with making a rom-com, writing something special separating it from the rest of its competitors, and doing it well, without writing something disgusting or weird. I’ll just say it now but Oregairu does this flawlessly and I’d say perfectly and will definitely leave you thinking about the world and the meaning of true love after you’ve watched it.
watching Oregairu is like sitting on an elaborate rollercoaster that never gets dull or repetitive, taking you for a ride that you surely won't forget leaving you with emotions and thoughts you’ve probably never felt before.
Oregairus story begins with one of the main protagonists Hikigaya Hachiman getting scolded for handing in a twisted report on the topic “youth”. You see Hachiman has a very interesting and unique personality which has kept him away from making any friends or basically any social contact since elementary school, in Hachiman's eyes should “the fools who enjoy this thing called youth just die”.
As punishment for the essay Hachiman is forced to join a club in school because he hasn’t joined one yet, the new club’s name is “the service club”, a club that exists to help others in need. When in the club room we are greeted by a beautiful girl whose name is Yukino Yukinoshita. Yukino is known throughout the whole school for being the most beautiful girl in school. Is this the start of the “romantic comedy” Hachiman hasn’t experienced yet? And frankly yes it is, but this is no ordinary love comedy due to Hachiman's twisted thoughts of the world and then Yukinos personality which can be described as cold and unfriendly thus giving her the nickname “ice queen”. Due to their different views on the world and relationships, they clash as soon as they meet and aren’t on good terms. Thus is the title My teen romantic comedy is wrong as I expected the perfect title because it’s a rom-com that’s totally wrong because there barely is any romance in it making the romantic comedy wrong.
After Hachiman joined the service club they get their first request from a girl named Yuigahama Yui who wants to learn how to bake handmade cookies for a certain someone. Turns out she’s a total bum at cooking, but with Hachiman's and Yukino's help, she at least gains a little bit of confidence. The next day Yui comes to the club again wanting to join and then we are introduced to the final protagonist Yui. Yui’s personality is the polar opposite of both Hachiman and Yukino being bubbly, full of energy, and good at expressing her emotions. Unlike Hachiman and Yukino, Yui has a bunch of friends and is even in the popular group of the school but even so, she joins the service club.
To briefly sum up the story, it revolves around the different problems the service club resolve and different social interactions and situations the three main protagonists face and how each one of them has a different view of solving them. If you’re looking for a romance-heavy anime to watch so is this not the anime for you, even though it’s a romantic comedy the romance in it is close to none, the story is more to the drama and character development side than your average bubbly romance. So if your looking for a deeper romance woth alot of drama you should watch this anime for it does it phenomenally.
With the course of the story, the main characters run into many problems and dilemmas often due to Hachiman's way of doing everything on his own, sacrificing himself over others, and as the story goes on we see more into their own personal problems and feelings that get in the way of the service club. With every new problem new emotions grow, emotions the main characters never have felt before opening their eyes to their true desires. You could say that I see Oregiaru as a blooming flower, the further into the story the more complex it becomes in every way especially the characters, even the side characters that you don't get to see as often play a big role in the story's development and the development of the main characters. You start to see emotions you’d never expect to see from different characters and new sides of them that you thought were impossible and it’s beautiful how it plays out.
As a whole, I think this story has some of the best-written characters that a romance has ever seen. At first glance, the characters might seem like your typical romance characters with the loner without friends and the beautiful girl who falls for the loner but that's far from the truth. Because this romance comedy is wrong, due to Hachiman’s view on youth and romance he isn’t attracted to anyone at all and is instead of mesmerized, disgusted by Yukino and the same goes for Yukino, and with Yui in the love triangle their characters and the situations they end up become more and more interesting as feelings start to well up. Due to Yui’s personality, she is very clingy to both Hachiman and Yukino and she is a very big reason that both Yukino and Hachiman start to open up and start being more social. Yui is also the first friend Yukino acknowledges. It’s not only the main characters who are interesting in the story, but the side characters are also very interesting and they play a bigger role in the plot than a normal side character should, the more people Yukino and Hachiman interact with the more you see them open up. So for me are all the characters in Oregairu are written exactly as they should have and I love all the characters due to their own depth and development throughout the story.
Even though I give the anime a lot of praise for its story and characters there isn’t a anime without some flaws, there aren’t a lot of things I would change about the anime the biggest thing I would have wanted was more content about the side characters. Even though they are side characters they were extremely crucial for the story whether they got help from the service club or helped them they changed the characters from time to time and still I didn’t see as much of them as I would’ve wanted. There were some extremely interesting that in my opinion saw too little of taking Hayato as an example he was Yukinos childhood friend and the star of the school. He’s known in the whole school and other schools as well and is very popular, he has friends, looks, lots of girls who crush on him and despite all that he says that he’s never found true love just as Hachiman never found true love, even though he doesn’t have any reason he is nice to Hachiman and in my opinion is one of the biggest reasons Hachiman turned out the way he did and despite his importance to the story we didn’t get to see what happened to him.
In conclusion, My teen romantic comedy is wrong as I expected lives up to its name. It’s a romantic comedy that’s wrong in many aspects breaking the stereotypes of a normal high school romance. Often when you talk about a romance the first thing that comes to mind are kissing, holding hands, etc, but the first thing that comes to mind for me after watching Oregairu is the perception of youth and how important social interaction are. Even with the story drama heavy the story also delivers its fair share of romantic and fussy moments that you look for in a romance and even having a good conclusion of the story. Oregairu is easily one of the most complex deeper animes trying to deliver a message while still giving you the bubbly feeling of high school romance I’ve watch. So sit back and find a relaxing position to watch in cause you’re in front of a ride of a lifetime.

How can a movie depict the words depression and social anxiety and then visualize it into a beautiful masterpiece you truly get to sit back and watch as tears stream down your face? The answer is A silent voice. A silent voice is an animated movie made by Kyoto animations which is one of the most prominent anime producers on the market and has made other big anime titles such as violet Evergarden and Hyouka. And many of you reading this right now may sit and think of the animated movie and be turned off by the thought of it but I'm telling you rn
...
this movie would be so much worse if it wasn’t animated and the animation really brings out visuals and feelings you couldn't if it was live-action. A silent voice is a movie about the main character Ishida Shouya and his story of going from a happy lively child to a depressed teen with mental health issues the other main character Nishimiya Shouko also battles mental health issues and is deaf. The story is a drama-filled adventure with romantic undertones and is probably aimed at the older teen audience thus the movie requires a lot of understanding and focus.
At the beginning of the movie, you are met with your first main character Ishida Shouya in grade school with his friends. His personality is bubbly and hyper and he seems to be very popular at school. We are then met with a new transfer student her name is Nishimiya Shouko and she's deaf. She communicates with a pen and paper and introduces herself. School goes on as usual and Nishimiya is friendly and tries to be friends with everyone including Ishida but Ishida refuses and looks at her in disgust and walks away every time. You then get to see Nishimiya’s struggles in school with her disability in situations like singing and reading out loud and then it starts, Ishida mimicking Nishimiya’s reading in a mocking way. The story then goes on Ishida's bullying gets worse and worse and it's not only Ishida it's the whole class but Ishida is the one that's “leading” the bullying. The bullying starts off as harmless mimicking but slowly turns into something more hideous and mean stuff. He doesn't only abuse them physically but also psychological torture. It finally gets to a point that Nishimiya has to transfer school because of the bullying and guess who all the blame gets laid on? Our main character, Ishida. Due to him taking all the blame his reputation goes to an all-time low and instead of him bullying he gets bullied in the same way and no one talks to him anymore.
Then we get to the time skip, Ishida is now in high school, and due to his past actions in grade school he can’t look people in the eye because he hates himself, he is depressed, has social anxiety, and is suicidal. He had learned to hate himself or what he’s done because of him being the outcast and feeling how it was. He felt bad he hated himself for what he’d done and couldn't forgive himself so he shut himself into his own world where no one exists but only him. And that is so beautifully depicted with everyone in the story having big X’s on their face so you can’t see who they are. In Ishida's eyes the people he doesn’t know he doesn’t care he is alone and no one understands him even his old classmates who talk to him have x’s on their faces he doesn't know who they are. We then see Ishida standing on top of a bridge planning to take his life but then suddenly decides not to but that he first has to go and make amends with Nishimiya. This story revolves around Ishida and Nishimiya's story and their complicated relationship, miscommunication, misinterpretation, not understanding each other, pain, sorrow and what complications mental health has on life and understanding people and how much one person can change due to their actions and I think it's beautifully made and a must-watch.
But how does this movie catch the watcher's feelings and really go in deep into the topic of mental health and how to they show it?. As I said before the x’s on people's faces we see through Ishidas eyes is a perfect example of a brilliant depiction of social anxiety wherever he looks he can't see people he's only himself. And when he finally gets a new friend the x’s peel off their faces and you can see them it's brilliant and beautiful. And another thing that makes this movie so good is the scenes, the camera work, and the animation which just brings the movie to a whole nother level. There are a lot of closeup “shots” of peaceful moments like holding hands, koi fish in the river, and the sun which usually are connected with the deeper parts of the story to make it feels a little more calming and sad. The whole atmosphere of the movie just is calming and sad the movie isn’t an upbeat action movie it is a slow-paced battle to fic ur bad deeds and the music, animation, and camera angle definitely help with the aesthetic and even though the movie is animated doesn’t mean the movie doesn’t really cause it is. I'm sure many people can relate to the main characters, especially people who suffer from mental health.
The movie is also very good at making you feel empathy, making you feel sad for the characters. At the beginning of the movie, you feel really bad for Nishimiya because she is getting bullied and she’s just trying to make friends and you really hade Ishida for bullying her. But that really changes fast as now you feel bad for Ishida because he is suicidal has no friends and is getting bullied, you also feel bad for him in scenes where he breaks down and lays all the fault on himself. Everything was his fault he should just go away he doesn’t deserve to exist and all this built-up emotion just comes raining down on you at the climax making you cry rivers. Everything is perfect the build-up, the animation, the music the situation they are in, the emotion you can bring out when the movie is animated that you can’t with a normal movie everything leads up to a perfect climax and a perfect ending.
In short, this is a movie about atonement, depression, sympathy, sadness, loss, friendship and mental health and this movie is not a movie you sit down and watch when ur in a good mood looking for a movie this is a movie that's supposed to get you into your feels and make you start thinking about life. I think the movie is a great movie one of the best movies I've seen but the movie needs a lot of focus and determination to fully understand the meaning behind it I also think you need to have the right mindset on stuff like mental health and disabilities to enjoy the movie you need to be more grown-up and take things seriously. This movie is not a movie made for kids it's a movie made for people who suffer from mental health people who need an escape this movie depicts how a depressed person wants to feel love but feels like you don't deserve it. If you're looking for a drama-heavy movie with a slow pace that really is a masterpiece you should watch A silent voice.
