Gungrave

Similar in that they both have themes of revenge, mostly take place in the past and follow three dimensional characters. Gungrave is a story about a young man called Brandon Heat (yes, that second name is ridiculous) and covers his background story. It's full of great gun fights, crime family drama and promises that will last a life time and beyond. Gankutsuou is literally an anime adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo with mechs. Can't say much better than that.

Nana
add

Two of the only 'romance' anime that I can honestly stomach. Nana is a story of two women who are both called Nana who meet each other by happenstance on a train and get to know each other. One is an awkward ditz and the other one is a cool and composed rock star. The anime follows their love lives and how they develop as people. It can be depressing, but it's very realistic and down to earth. Shizuka is an anime that feels very real too, centered around a young man and his interest in a girl called Shizuka who is still dealing with trauma relevant to past relationships. It is not just a generic 'love at first sight' show. All of the characters have a lot of trials and tribulations and it's very interesting to check out.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

...then you might like
Kimetsu no Yaiba
add

Both series revolve around one sibling looking out for and trying to heal another sibling of an ailment. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is a full adaptation of the original manga series. It is set in a fictional, European inspired setting and revolves around the supernatural element of alchemy. Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer is set in what seems to be towards the end of the meiji period of Japan where technology is being steadily introduced, though I may be wrong, and is about a young man who is trying to save his sister while following the path of a demon slayer.

FLCL
add

Both by Studio Gainax if I remember correctly! Neon Genesis Evangelion is the series that started a LOT of anime tropes that we know today. It seems to be a general, classic 'mech' anime at first glance but it later becomes a well known serial mind fuck. FLCL is a strange and surreal abstract comedy series from the same company, that borders on the 'why the f*ck' am I watching this?

Ergo Proxy
add

Both of these series have heavy psychological components. Ergo Proxy uses a lot of heavy symbolism and is a tad pretentious but is genuinely one of the most artistic and thought compelling series to ever be produced.

If you liked
Death Note
add
...then you might like
Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch
add

Both series have scheming, anti-hero/villain protagonists that excel at manipulating other people. Death Note takes place in a realistic, modern world with a very low element of the supernatural that enables a rich, interesting 'what if' story. Code Geass is a flamboyant story of a futuristic world that's been mostly brought to heel by the British. Like Death Note, the introduction of the 'supernatural' enables the protagonist to take radical actions. There's mecha battles and a lot of posing.

Sidonia no Kishi
add

Both futuristic post apocalyptic sci-fi that explore the human condition in survival oriented situations. Blue Gender is set on a post apocalyptic planet and is very compelling. Knights of Sidonia, I -think- is a Netflix original with unique animation and takes place primarily in space aboard a large colony vessel. The Sidonia no Kishi manga is finished and very good too.

Blood-C

Don't watch Blood-C. It's trash. Just put that here for that reason. Blood+ is a decent, complete anime and perfect for those of you who enjoy modern settings, swords, fantasy and sci-fi intermingling. Lots of family drama, character development and high octane action. Inspired by Blood The Last Vampire - but this is NOT a vampire anime. Enjoy.

Danganronpa: Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no Koukousei The Animation
add

If I could, I would just get people to play the original visual novels of these games instead. Higurashi is the real bread winner, imo. The visual novel is one of the most eerie, foreboding pieces of media I have ever played. It does an AMAZING job of building up the world surrounding Hinamizawa and the mysteries surrounding it, constantly examining characters from fresh new angles. The anime is pretty accurate to the source material and definitely worth a watch, imo. It can get confusing as the story is split into arcs that all take place in alternative realities but really, stick through it. It's worth it. Danganronpa is a visual novel in a similar vein and is also mystery oriented, with less focus on reality and more bat shit crazy antics.

Black Lagoon
add

If you like shoot 'em ups with an element of drama, then look no further. Cowbow Bebop WAS huge back when it was released and is still insanely popular. Revy from Black Lagoon is one of the most bad ass gunslingers out there. Cowboy Bebop is more down to earth despite being sci fi oriented and Black Lagoon, while very emotional at times, is more concerned with filthy mouths, high tempers and taking a good look at people's shittiness.

Aku no Hana
add

Yeah, there's really not much in common between these two shows but I don't think I've seen anything else like Aku no Hana and since I can't just list recommendations without having comparisons...? Aku no Hana or 'Flower of Evil' iirc is an oddly animated and terrible looking show that deals with real human issues of alienation and mental illness. Golden Boy is a short, comedic skit show about a young man who seems underwhelming at first glance but always exceeds expectations before anyone knows any better.

If you liked
Bokura no

Subete ga F ni Naru
add

Both highly psychological anime. I won't lie, Bokurano is a bit of a downer but both series are very intensive in how they examine human behavior with Subete ga F ni Naru or 'The Perfect Insider' being more mystery oriented.

If you liked
Kenpuu Denki Berserk

Vinland Saga

Both shows that are very serious, gritty and down to earth and based on somewhat classic manga series. Berserk in particular was a huge trend setter and has had a major influence on the 'dark fantasy' genre.

Durarara!!
add

I believe these two shows are by the same writers or studio. They are quite unique compared to other anime in the way they are presented, telling complex stories that are all happening at the same time while constantly shifting the pov without any present protagonist. These shows tell multiple stories that all contribute to a singular narrative. Durararara!! is more modern but both series have small elements of fantasy.
