7/10. A beautiful anime scarred by its predictability, length, shounen moments and often poor animation.
SPOILER FREE review first:
This is a great slice-of-life semi-romantic anime to get into. The biggest draw is the classical music, which will have you wanting to try out piano by the end of it. The premise of the story and the characters are fantastic, with Kaori’s brightness and constant smile contrasting perfectly with Kousei’s inner darkness and sad past.
The “action” sequences (when they are actually playing the instruments) are done surprisingly well and were never at any point boring. The music choice was perfect, and each piece felt like it
...
belonged.
Unfortunately, I felt the anime could definitely have been cut down by an episode or two, and the shounen moments tried really hard to be funny but just ended up being cringey. There were several scenes that I enjoyed, and thought were very emotional, only to have them ruined by one of the characters becoming really angry to provide some comedic relief (or some other such stupid thing).
Worth at least one watch through.
SPOILER REVIEW:
A perfect quote to summarize this anime would be “The saddest part is when somebody who gives you the best memory, becomes a memory”.
A painful reminder of how, when people die, they only live on in our mind, and that if we don’t share those memories no one else will ever know how amazing that person was. I’ve always had an issue with this in books, movies and anime; it makes me sad whenever I think about how many stories have gone untold. The anime swung between being full of life to depressing very well.
I also loved the explanation behind the title - even though it seems simple, I thought that was superb writing.
So why only 7/10?
In short, the ending is super predictable and IMO very unsatisfying. About halfway through the anime we see Kaori taking dozens of pills and feeling faint, and when she says, “I’m not going to always be around”, you can immediately tell that she has an illness. Another predictable moment was when Kousei and the fake boyfriend arrive at the hospital to say hello and a bunch of doctors come rushing in and it looks like Kaori is about to die – except you can immediately tell that she isn’t, and guess what, the next day she’s just fine. I found the cat death more emotional than that moment.
And even though you can see it coming a mile away, I honestly hoped that she would stay alive. It just seems so stupid that Kousei worked so hard to reach this point, he’s finally ready to admit his feelings for her, and then she just dies. The exact moment she does die was unpredictable – in a bad way. One moment you think “oh, there’s a chance she survives” – and then boom, she’s dead.
The animation leaves a lot to be desired. Sure, a lot of it was animated well and the super intense piano and violin moments were done very well, but there were a LOT of still scenes that dragged on a bit too much.
And lastly, like I said before, I hated all the typical shonen moments / animation. Like the sharp angry faces and boob shots. They tried to be funny but just ended up being cringey and destroyed what could have been an emotional / deep scene. The anime tried to take itself seriously, and these moments just interrupted everything and felt so out of place. I’m all for shounen moments in anime that don’t care about making super emotional stories. Here it just doesn’t work.

SPOILER ALERT: Oh wait theres nothing to spoil
5/10. I usually like harem animes, but Jesus Christ what a cringefest.
I would give it a 4.5 but there are no half ratings on MAL.
The only thing this anime had going for it were some hot girls and one semi-decent music track.
The plot was super predictable. In fact there really was no plot at all - just a generic hint of a series of events that tried to make every situation as cringey as possible. I found it hard to force myself to continue watching.
Oh, and the characters sucked. The MC is an idiotic b*tch, and the rest
...
of them are shallow. I was only interested by Mami - her double personality was pretty cool and I was intrigued to see what her motives were and who she was tweeting/messaging on her phone. But it turns out she has no motives at all??? I feel like the writer had ideas for her but just gave up.
There were some stupid developments in here too. Like when that other rental acted like she was going to expose the MC and Chizuru - why? What possible reason could she have for doing that? She later explains she was just having a giggle - really?? That seems so pathetic.

9/10, Sorry MAPPA.
The three biggest draws of AoT for me were the animation, the story, and the music. Out of these three, none impressed me.
SPOILERS BELOW
Animation
Obviously no one is going to think the animation is good, not when we go from WIT's once in a lifetime quality to cheap 3D animation. Sure, what we got in the given timeframe was good, but you can't ignore that S 1 - 3 were a joy to watch simply for the visuals. My God, I miss WIT's clouds and backgrounds. After watching a video comparison of S 1 - 3 with S4 I also noticed how many stills
...
MAPPA used.
Art
Branching off slightly from animation, I just wanted to say I like the new art style. Combined with the new character designs, it really shows how much they've all grown and matured over the four year story gap.
Story
Eren is now the fattest pile of steaming horse excrement on the planet. For the past 3 seasons all Eren wanted was to be completely free, and now he's advocating for a Euthanasia plan? What? How is not having children to kill of the Eldians considered "freedom"? And even if this is an act or something that will be explained in S4P2, it doesn't make up for his fall from grace.
Oh, and screw Gabi.
Music
Look, I'm gonna go out and say that I wish Hiroyuki Sawano had written the whole OST himself. Sure, Ashes on the Fire was cool, but it wasn't as epic as Counter Attack Mankind or as badass as YouSeeBigGirl. I enjoyed the new tracks we did get, specifically the Jaegerists' and Niccolo's themes, but I can't help but feel we could have gotten a slightly more... complex main track.
Voice Acting
I primarily watch the dubbed. Unfortunetly, although it is still better than the subbed, I noticed a severe drop in quality (presumably because most of the VA's had to record from home). As for the subbed, Yuki Kaji trying to make his voice deeper to show that Eren has grown just did not cut it for me. It sounds a bit ridiculous.
So, why the 9? Because I still enjoyed it. Notice I said I wasn't impressed, not that I didn't like it. After S3P2, it's going to be very hard for me to be impressed by any anime.
It was worth the watch as the underlying story is still fantastic (it's AoT, for gods sake) but the time restraints and studio change were not the right move to make.
