This type of work is not the usual story that I pick up. I tend to drift more towards more nihilstic aspects so I guess that is what drew me to this. It is also my first Asano book so it probably wasnt a good place to start.
The manga is interesting from the standpoint that the narrator does a really bad job of describing what is going on, mostly with people. This was a roller coaster of feelings. The whole show starts with a very somber feeling and just watching it drained me and made me feel a little depressed. While the second season had some similar story beats as the first season, it felt more like you could see the sunshine through the clouds. Once I got about halfway through the season the feelings were opposite, and it actually made me feel very light and airy. I'm hoping they go for another season.

Straight off the bat I'll list the positives.
This movie has some stunning visuals and art direction, given who the director is here it is pretty much expected to be at least this good. There are some scenes where I wasn't completely sure if it was a live action shot or not and the use of lens flairs and cinematography are exceptional as well. Easily 10/10 The music score was beautiful as well, which mostly consisted of a piano score. It was a very minimalist in the use of music and lets the silence do as much work as the sound did. I just finished episode 4 and I am having trouble staying invested in the plot. The plot points are established and put to rest so fast I don't know how I'm expected too. We've had villains show up and get beaten by the Goku esq protagonist in a couple episodes, or in just one move. A tournament arc seems pointless when I don't even feel like the characters are in danger.
I hope they stick with something soon or I wont have a reason to watch a second season, and I think the characters have a lot of potential. The art and animation is also very ... |
